Dożynki Polish Harvest Festival at HMR Cathedral Parish in Buffalo

The 5th Annual Dożynki Polish Harvest Festival will be held at Holy Mother of the Rosary Cathedral Parish in Lancaster, New York on Sunday September 13, 2009 from 10am to 8pm. Admission is free.

Holy Mother of the Rosary Cathedral Parish is located at 6298 Broadway in Lancaster, NY (Between Schwartz & Ransom Roads).

The day’s events:

10am – High Holy Mass
11am – Dożynki Ceremony
12 Noon- till sold out – food service including their famous Polish Platter and delicacies like Czernina (Duck’s Blood Soup) and Rosół (Rich Polish-Style Chicken Soup)

1pm – Polish Heritage Dancers of WNY
3:30pm – Cathedral Concert – Bell Choir & Organ
4 to 8 PM – PhoCus (Buffalo’s newest Polka Band)

Homemade Polish Food (American food also available)

Poetry notes

The return of the epic:

Dr. John Guzlowski informs that Matt Flumerfelt has been working on an epic poem based on the labors of Hercules, and he’s posted the first XIV books at his blog Baloney Emporium. Dr. Guzlowski has blogged about it with a sample from the poem. He says: Matt is a demon rhymer, and I think he’s going to bring rhyming back!

On the Psalms:

Dr. Guzlowski has also posted a short piece about Charles Swanson’s book of poems “After the Garden: Selected Responses to the Psalms.” Mr. Swanson’s poems bring together his love of the psalms and stories from his own life.

Poland To Buffalo Through WWII: Untold Stories Come Alive

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the start of WWII. It all began with the invasion of Poland by Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union. Living among us in Western New York are civilian and military survivors of the war who endured Nazi and Soviet labor and concentration camps as well as battles on many fronts. These eyewitnesses to the dramatic historical events of the 20th century have lived quietly in WNY for 60+ years without telling their story to the wider community.

The Polish Legacy Project was formed by a group of people whose aim is to capture the stories of these survivors while they are still among us. Our first major event will be a conference held October 3-4 in Buffalo. The title of the conference is: “Poland To Buffalo Through WWII: Untold Stories Come Alive.”

The conference will allow Polish survivors of WWII who have settled in the United States to share their stories of struggle and survival with the wider community. This unique gathering will be the first large-scale opportunity for the community at large to become acquainted with these untold stories of wartime survival and immigration to America in the English language.

On October 3, a panel of survivors will speak about their experiences, a keynote speaker from Montreal will give a presentation on “The Childrens’ Odyssey” to America, a background will be given on Poland in WWII and opportunities for one-on-one interviews with survivors will be available.

On October 4, the day will begin with a Remembrance Mass, followed by a Reunion of Families who settled in America after the war and a film entitled “Exiles” about a daughter’s quest to learn her mother’s wartime story. Opportunities to share photos, buy books and get assistance with research will be available.

The conference is being organized in collaboration with the Polish American Congress, WNY Division, The City of Buffalo through the office of City Council President David Franczyk and the Permanent Chair of Polish Culture at Canisius College. WNED-TV is the Media Sponsor for the event.

Saints Cyril and Methodius to hold Back to School auction in Perth Amboy, NJ

From myCentralJersey: Church to host Chinese auction

PERTH AMBOY —” Saints Cyril and Methodius Polish National Catholic Church will host a Chinese auction at noon Sunday, Aug. 16 at the Parish Hall, 600 Jacques St., Perth Amboy. Doors open at noon. The auction begins at 1:30 p.m. There is a $3 entrance fee.

The auction enables the church to pay its bills and keep its doors open. The church has received some donations from people who are attending the auction. The remaining donations are given by members of the parish.

Additional tickets can be purchased for two sheets for $1. There are two tables with 24 items that are about $10 each. These tickets are six for $1. Another table has seasonal items that are $5 to $10. Tickets for this table are three for $1.

The theme of the auction is —Back to School.— Free cake and coffee will be provided.

Polish Festival in Toledo, Ohio

Lagrange Street Polish Festival: Toledo’s Polish Village will celebrate its heritage with polka music and dance contest, food, rides and games, and arts and craft vendors. 5p.m. to 11:00p.m. July 10, Noon-11p.m. July 11, and noon-7p.m. July 12, Polish Village, Lagrange Street, between Central Avenue and Mettler Street. $1-$3. Upcoming PNCC events

Annual Prayer Services at the Cathedral of the Pines

The annual Eastern Diocese Prayer Service [pdf] will be held at the Cathedral of the Pines in Rindge, NH on Sunday, July 12th beginning at 3:30pm. This year’s Service coincides with the centenary of the Sacrament of the Word of God. This year’s Service will focus on this momentous anniversary. The Rt. Rev. Thomas Gnat will be the celebrant of the Service and the Very Rev. Joseph Soltysiak will offer the homily.

A chicken barbecue dinner will be catered on the Cathedral grounds for us. The cost is $12 for adults and $6 for children 7 and under. Reservations for the dinner need to be made by June 30th. Reservations should be made through Fr. Sen. Joseph Soltysiak by calling 413-562-4403.

The Service will include a special collection on behalf of the Military Child Education Coalition. This is a non-profit organization whose objective is self-explanatory. Our theme of the Word of God and the Cathedral’s orientation as a memorial to our American war dead have inspired the choice of this charity. You may make your donation on the day of the Prayer Service, or if you wish you may do so in advance.

KURS Encampment

The annual summer camp wil be held at the Bishop Hodur Retreat and Recreation Center at Spojnia Farm in Waymrt, PA from Friday, July 3, 2009 to Saturday, July 11, 2009. The camp program includes exciting activities such as dances, lectures on current events, sports, and games to advance our children’s knowledge of their Church. The fee, which includes a T-shirt is only $180 for PNCC members ($250 for non-members). Members should check with their local YMSofR President as Parish organizations frequently underwrite the cost of attendance. For further information please contact Nick Kazinetz.

2009 National Women’s Retreat

The National United Women’s Societies for the Adoration of the Most Blessed Sacrament invites all women to this retreat, which will be held at the Bishop Hodur Retreat and Recreation Center in Waymart, PA. The dates of the Retreat are Thursday, August 13th —“ Saturday, August 15th. The registration deadline is July 31st. The presenter will be Leslie Vernick. Leslie is a diplomat in clinical social work and a member of the American Association of Christian Counselors. She is an adjunct professor at Philadelphia Biblical University. Her seminars are filled with practical application of God’s word. Leslie will present “How to Find Selfless Joy in a Me-First World.” Another one of her topics is: “Becoming The Best Possible You!”

The registration fee is $100.00 for Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Space is limited. Commuter Fee: $80.00. Registration begins on Thursday at 3 pm with a light supper and optional activities Accommodations include: Thursday & Friday overnight in a semi- private room. Thursday dinner, 3 meals on Friday and breakfast and an optional lunch on Saturday. The center is handicap accessible, no air conditioning in rooms, dorm style bath and shower. Tonight at Albany’s PCC – Evgen Malinovskiy, Siberian Bard

Evgen Malinovskiy will be appearing tonight, Thursday, June 25th, 7:30pm at Albany’s Polish Community Center, 225 Washington Ave. Ext., Albany.

He will present the music and poetry of Vladimir Visotski, Bulat Okudjava, and Rozenbaum. Mr. Malinovskiy is known as the Siberian Bard. He is also a movie and theater actor.

Come and enjoy evening with friends and family. Suggested Donation between $5 and $10 per person.
