History of the National United Choirs Music Scholarship Program of the PNCC

The Music Scholarship Program was instituted on August 8, 1964 by the Sixth General Convention of the National United Choirs of the Polish National Catholic Church held in Carnegie, PA. The program was implemented at the Seventh General Convention, held in Cleveland, OH, on August 6, 1966, when the first awards were presented. The XII General Synod of the PNCC established the last Sunday in January as “Music Scholarship Sunday.”

The Music Scholarship program was instituted and tailored to develop musicians within the Polish National Catholic Church. The program was further expanded to establish a Chair of Music at the Savonarola Theological Seminary of our Church in Scranton, PA, and to also make scholarships available in other areas of music to enrich the musical life of the Church.

The Scholarship Program awards are divided into 2 categories: general scholarships and endowed scholarships.

Opportunities for Youth in Service and the Arts

National Learn & Serve Challenge: Interest and participation in the National Learn & Serve Challenge continues to grow. Participation has reached an all-time high of 283,932 people. The year-long challenge aims to expand opportunities for youth to serve and promote service-learning, a proven teaching method that harnesses the enthusiasm and skills of young people to solve problems in their schools and communities as part of their academic studies. This year also marks the 20th anniversary of Learn and Serve America, to be observed December 6-10, 2010.

Call for Entries: 2011 VSA International Young Soloists Award: Since 1984 the Young Soloists Program has been seeking to identify talented musicians who have a disability. This award is given annually to four outstanding musicians, two from the United States and two from the international arena. The award provides an opportunity for these emerging musicians to each earn a $5,000 award and a performance in Washington, D.C. Download a 2010-2011 Young Soloist Award application.

The Kennedy Center/National Symphony Orchestra Summer Music Institute: A 4-week summer music program at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC, for student instrumentalists. The program is open, by recorded audition, to students who are seriously considering orchestral music as a career and are in grades 9 through 12 or are a college freshman or sophomore. Each student accepted into the program attends on full scholarship, which includes round trip air transportation to and from Washington DC, housing, food allowance, and local transportation during their stay in the Nation’s Capital. Of scholarships and auctions – around the Central Diocese

Edwardsville, PA: Congratulations to Juliann Perikonis, Diminik Tarnawczyk and Larry Mazurek, recent recipients of the Lawrence Reilly Jr. and Lawrence Reilly Sr. scholarships presented at The Resurrection of The Lord P.N.C.C., Edwardsville. The three members of the parish and youth group wrote essays about their academics, sports, hobbies and participation with the church and youth group, as per the requirements set forth by the Lawrence Reilly family. The scholarships were presented by Robert Albee. Perikonis was the senior high school winner; Tarnawczyk was the junior high winner; and Mazurek was the elementary winner.

Shenandoah, PA: Holy Ghost Polish National Catholic Church, 28 N. Chestnut Street, will hold a Chinese auction, Sunday, September 12th at the church. Doors will open at noon. Admission is $3. Light refreshments will be available. Everyone is welcome. Proceeds will benefit the church.

American Polish Council of Long Island announces that it will award a “Leon Young Scholarship” for 2009.

The application deadline is May 27th, and is fast approaching! More information and applications are available for download at the Council’s website or by calling toll free 1-877-455-4344 to request an application via U.S. Mail.

The American Polish Council of Long island is proud to support Polonian youth and help with their continued success. For more than 40 years the Council has awarded an annual scholarship to a deserving high school senior, and for the last few years has awarded two $1,000 scholarships to Long Island graduating seniors.

The Council invites all graduating seniors of Polish decent to submit an application for this year’s scholarship.

Scholarships Available!

The President of the Polish American Cultural Association, Joe Brala along with Chairperson Irene Wierzbicki, announced the opening of the Association’s application period for its annual scholarship award.

There will be a one time award of $1,000 given to a high school senior attending college in September 2009. In addition, the President of the General Pulaski Foundation, Michael Bibla, announces an $800 scholarship is also available.

To qualify for these awards, a student must be of Polish ancestry, well rounded academically and a responsible community minded citizen. For an application, call the Polish American Cultural Association at 516-883-5553 or Chairperson Irene Wierzbicki at 516-671-7081.

Scholarship applications due

Another scholarship application season is upon us.

Kosciuszko Foundation scholarship applications are currently being accepted for academic year 2008-2009. The majority of Foundation scholarships support Master and Ph. D. studies. There are also a limited number of scholarships for undergraduate students covering a junior or senior year abroad in Poland. The Foundation also support research projects in Poland.

The deadline for filing scholarship applications is January 15, 2008. All applicants will be notified of the results in May 2008.
