Pascha

The Paschal Homily of St. John Chrysostom (Read Each Year at Pascha)

Is there anyone who is a devout lover of God? Let them enjoy this beautiful bright festival! Is there anyone who is a grateful servant? Let them rejoice and enter into the joy of their Lord!

Are there any weary with fasting? Let them now receive their wages! If any have toiled from the first hour, let them receive their due reward; If any have come after the third hour, let him with gratitude join in the Feast! And he that arrived after the sixth hour, let him not doubt; for he too shall sustain no loss. And if any delayed until the ninth hour, let him not hesitate; but let him come too. And he who arrived only at the eleventh hour, let him not be afraid by reason of his delay.

For the Lord is gracious and receives the last even as the first. He gives rest to him that comes at the eleventh hour, as well as to him that toiled from the first. To this one He gives, and upon another He bestows. He accepts the works as He greets the endeavor. The deed He honors and the intention He commends.

Let us all enter into the joy of the Lord! First and last alike receive your reward; rich and poor, rejoice together! Sober and slothful, celebrate the day!

You that have kept the fast, and you that have not, rejoice today for the Table is richly laden! Feast royally on it, the calf is a fatted one. Let no one go away hungry. Partake, all, of the cup of faith. Enjoy all the riches of His goodness!

Let no one grieve at his poverty, for the universal kingdom has been revealed. Let no one mourn that he has fallen again and again; for forgiveness has risen from the grave. Let no one fear death, for the Death of our Savior has set us free.
He has destroyed it by enduring it.

He destroyed Hades when He descended into it. He put it into an uproar even as it tasted of His flesh. Isaiah foretold this when he said, “You, O Hell, have been troubled by encountering Him below.”

Hell was in an uproar because it was done away with. It was in an uproar because it is mocked. It was in an uproar, for it is destroyed. It is in an uproar, for it is annihilated. It is in an uproar, for it is now made captive. Hell took a body, and discovered God. It took earth, and encountered Heaven. It took what it saw, and was overcome by what it did not see.

O death, where is thy sting? O Hades, where is thy victory?

Christ is Risen, and you, O death, are annihilated! Christ is Risen, and the evil ones are cast down! Christ is Risen, and the angels rejoice! Christ is Risen, and life is liberated! Christ is Risen, and the tomb is emptied of its dead; for Christ having risen from the dead, is become the first-fruits of those who have fallen asleep.

To Him be Glory and Power forever and ever. Amen!

A new ministry

A colleague from our ecumenical group has offered me an opportunity to assume his nursing home ministry.

I begin tomorrow.

The nursing home is run by the Daughters of Sarah. There is a small group of Christians who live there and meet once a month for prayer, scripture, and fellowship.

In my seminary days I had a nursing home ministry. When I lived in Buffalo I worked at a senior respite center and in a hospital based skilled nursing facility. I look forward to resuming this type of work. I always found it to be rewarding. The Lord works in marvelous ways through us and teaches us greatly through the challenges such a ministry brings.

I pray that the Holy Spirit will work through my hands and words to bring our Lord’s healing love to these folks.

Please keep me in your prayers.

Pray for the repose of her soul, and for her work…

Sister Karen Klimczak was a tireless worker for non-violence, the rehabilitation of convicts, and for all those in need. She was killed during Holy Week. The Buffalo News has three articles about her and her work. Please pray for the repose of her soul and that her work be carried on.

Missing nun dead; man charged

Police say suspect attacked sister during a burglary

Just as 600 people prayed for a miracle that a missing nun who devoted her life to nonviolence would be found alive, authorities made the devastating announcement Monday evening that her body had been recovered and that an ex-convict she tried to help was arrested in her murder.

Sister Karen was careful, but determined to help

She worked tirelessly for ex-convicts, peace

Sister Karen Klimczak devoted her life and ministry to peace and to stemming the type of violence that claimed her as a victim.

Sister Karen Klimczak figured that good could thrive in a place once marred by evil, just as she believed that ex-convicts deserved a second chance.

The tireless Catholic nun reclaimed a Grider Street rectory from the memory of a horrible crime and encouraged former prisoners toward productive futures.

Bishop Edward U. Kmiec also called for the work that Sister Karen did to be continued.

“It is people like Sister Karen who devote their lives, often at great peril, to assist those in society who so desperately need help, compassion and understanding,” Kmiec said in a written statement. “She was at the forefront of the non-violence movement in Buffalo and it is my sincere hope that as a community, we can address the issues that have resulted in a serious escalation of violent crime. Let this be a call for the entire community to come up with workable solutions to end this senseless violence.”

She took a stand for others

Personal recollection: Remembering Sister Karen Klimczak

Early on Holy Saturday, on my annual trip to the Broadway Market, we drove past Hope House, and it reminded me, once again, of Sister Karen Klimczak. I didn’t know, at the time, that she was missing.

In 1989, I interviewed her for a Sunday magazine piece on grass-roots efforts in the Catholic Church, those street-level ministries that spring from the goodness, the ideals, the ideas of one or two people. Included were Little Portion Friary, a Main Street shelter for homeless men and women; the Franciscan Center, a home for adolescent males; Benedict House, a haven for people with AIDS.

And Hope House, where Sister Karen welcomed and guided men coming out of prison.

I haven’t seen her in years, but I remember her well.

The Statistical Validity of Prayer

Statistics are valid to the extent that they measure something measurable.

Case in point is today’s report, which the media is trumping up to say, as today’s headlines say: Prayer does not heal the sick, study finds

Of course those perusing the headline will draw their conclusions from the headline itself. That’s because we assume science can provide all the answers. Certainly, good science can provide a lot of answers. However, bad science and badly designed studies prove nothing.

To wit, those who read the story will see that the study’s authors report that their study proved nothing (except for the fact that they have some money in their pocket):

But the study “did not move us forward or backward” in understanding the effects of prayer, admitted Dr Charles Bethea, one of the co-authors and a cardiologist at the Integris Baptist Medical Center in Oklahoma City. “Intercessory prayer under our restricted format had a neutral effect,” he said.

From a real simplistic perspective: Were all patients in the study groups equally sick with equal pre-existing lifestyles and habits? Was the prayer genuine? Does God answer prayers to meet our will or to bring about His own will? Hmmmm… gets fuzzier.

If I create a room in which an absolute temperature of zero Celsius is maintained, and I put a glass of pure water in it, it will freeze. I can control the room, the temperature, the water, and all the conditions of the study. As studies become less defined, with fewer and fewer controlled inputs, as this one is, the results become merely speculative.

God is God and faith in Him is our privilege. I continue to pray.

That the Deity is incomprehensible, and that we ought not to pry into and meddle with the things which have not been delivered to us by the holy Prophets, and Apostles, and Evangelists.

No one hath seen God at any time; the Only-begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, He hath declared Him. The Deity, therefore, is ineffable and incomprehensible. For no one knoweth the Father, save the Son, nor the Son, save the Father. And the Holy Spirit, too, so knows the things of God as the spirit of the man knows the things that are in him. Moreover, after the first and blessed nature no one, not of men only, but even of supramundane powers, and the Cherubim, I say, and Seraphim themselves, has ever known God, save he to whom He revealed Himself.

God, however, did not leave us in absolute ignorance. For the knowledge of God’s existence has been implanted by Him in all by nature. This creation, too, and its maintenance, and its government, proclaim the majesty of the Divine nature. Moreover, by the Law and the Prophets in former times and afterwards by His Only-begotten Son, our Lord and God and Saviour Jesus Christ, He disclosed to us the knowledge of Himself as that was possible for us. All things, therefore, that have been delivered to us by Law and Prophets and Apostles and Evangelists we receive, and know, and honour, seeking for nothing beyond these. For God, being good, is the cause of all good, subject neither to envy nor to any passion. For envy is far removed from the Divine nature, which is both passionless and only good. As knowing all things, therefore, and providing for what is profitable for each, He revealed that which it was to our profit to know; but what we were unable to bear He kept secret. With these things let us be satisfied, and let us abide by them, not removing everlasting boundaries, nor overpassing the divine tradition.

A Prayer of Glory to Christ

St. Ephrem of Syria - Deacon

Glory to Thee, Lord

What shall I give Thee, Lord, in return for all Thy kindness?
Glory to Thee for Thy love.
Glory to Thee for Thy mercy.
Glory to Thee for Thy patience.
Glory to Thee for forgiving us all our sins.
Glory to Thee for coming to save our souls.
Glory to Thee for Thine incarnation in the Virgin’s womb.
Glory to Thee for Thy bonds.
Glory to Thee for receiving the cut of the lash.
Glory to Thee for accepting mockery.
Glory to Thee for Thy crucifixion.
Glory to Thee for Thy burial.
Glory to Thee for Thy resurrection.
Glory to Thee who were preached to men and women.
Glory to Thee in whom they believed.
Glory to Thee who were taken up into Heaven.
Glory to Thee who sit in great glory at the Father’s right hand.
Glory to Thee whose will it is that the sinner should be saved
through Thy great mercy and compassion.

–St Ephraim of Edessa the Syrian, Deacon, Monk, and Hymnographer of the Church

A special thank you to Monachos.

Please pray with me – At Least 66 Killed in Poland Roof Collapse

KATOWICE, Poland – The snow-covered roof of a convention hall in southern Poland collapsed Saturday with as many as 500 people inside for a racing pigeon exhibition, killing at least 32 60 66 people and injuring at least 141 160.

A priest outside the building’s entrance prayed over the bodies of an adult and a child covered by a blanket and a tarp, as rescue crews and search dogs worked frantically through the night in subfreezing temperatures to save those trapped inside.

More from the AP here…

Please pray along with me:

O Lord God, Father of Mercy, grant calmness and control of thought to those who are facing uncertainty and anxiety; let their hearts stand fast, believing in the Lord. Be Thou all things to all men, knowing each one and his petition, each house and its need. For the sake of Jesus Christ. Amen

O Merciful God, Father of the Crucified Christ! In every sorrow which awaits us may we look up to You without doubt or fear, persuaded that Your mercy is ever sure. You cannot fail us. There is no place or time where You are not. Uphold us in our grief and sorrow, and in our darkness visit us with Your light. We are Yours; help us we beg You, in life and in death to feel that we are Yours. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Current Events, Political

Alito —“ Politics is a dangerous game

I’m probably one of the few Christian bloggers who are not coming out hot and heavy for the Alito nomination.  Let’s go Alito, he’s our man, etc., etc.  Well I’m not coming out for him, nor for anyone else.

I like the voting booth.  It’s private —“ and that’s a protection.  My vote is between me, the machine, and God, and you know Deus ex machina.  It’s why we as the faithful must work to stop evil, must pray diligently, but must not yoke ourselves to anyone, most especially to someone in the government realm.

The problem as I see it comes down to this:

He’s a Politician:  Anyone in the judiciary or any other public office is subject to the old give and take.  Whether it be to financial supporters or interest groups what wield power, no one is true to who they are.  They can be, but alas are not.  Our system is too corrupt to allow it.  Can you imagine if he were to be honest about abortion or a thousand other things?  Rather, he will say what he has to.  If he were honest, the old ‘borked’ adage would be gone.  It would now be ‘roasted ala Alito.’  Even Peter capitulated under pressure in the outer court of the High Priest.  Can we expect more from Alito?

Where does he stand? Caveat emptor —“ how many Supreme Court nominees, once appointed were not who people thought they would be?  Plenty, and the Presidents’ that offered up the nominations were as surprised as the interest groups.  I don’t want to try to foretell the future of another person.  I don’t believe in fortunetelling in the first place and secondly I can’t even predict my own future.  Even if he had a slew of published decisions and writings expounding on the evils of abortion, euthanasia, or other pertinent subjects (he’s be dead already), it is already in the past.  The past can give us a clue, but only a clue.

Outward signs: OK he is Catholic, ethnic, has two children (good family planning I think), belongs to the right societies.  He has some good decisions and was nominated by an allegedly conservative president.  But remember the oft quoted Henri IV, ‘Paris is well worth a mass’.  It has been said that this quote shows the depth to which people would go for power.  While some scholarship reports it as being apocryphal, it is in any event a statement that makes the case very clearly —“ we do not truly understand another man’s motivations.

What’s the right thing to do:  Instead of pretending to read the political tea leaves, instead of pretending to know who gave whom private assurances and what secret litmus tests were administered, maybe, just maybe, we should pray twice as hard.

Pray that whomever is confirmed is a person of integrity.  Pray that the other Justices will be enlightened by the Holy Spirit.  Pray that those who are blind to government sanctioned murder will have their eyes opened.  Pray that their decisions on cases move to affirmatively end abortion, euthanasia, and thousands of other evils.  Pray that the states do not allow abortion and euthanasia to continue.

For me and my house we will pray.

Silent Night – Across the World

Just before Christmas our parish was approached by a writer from the Assiciated Press office in Albany, NY.  She was doing a story on the hymn ‘Silent Night’ and its universal appeal.

Our pastor’s wife was interviewed and sang a line for the article.

The article turned out beautifully.  You can view it and hear Silent Night in a combination of 14 languages at

On the death of 12 miners

Please join in prayer for the repose of the souls of those killed in the mine disaster in West Virginia.

Eternal rest grant onto them O Lord, and may the perpetual light shine upon them. Amen.

Lord Jesus, please welcome our brothers into Your eternal kingdom. Each day, as they served the needs of their fellow man, by working deep within the earth, they placed their trust in you. Grant that they may lay down the heavy load they bore at your feet and that they may receive from You just recompense for their labor. Amen.
