The snow

Being a native Buffalonian, I can say that the great storm that hit Albany was a biggie. Not insurmountable, but big.

In a way, I was glad to see it. It makes the winter seem normal. Now everyone can relax and forget about global warming, at least until the Atlantic Ocean borders on Dutchess County.

I got to work Wednesday morning without much of a problem. I commented to my secretary that it was just like driving on Sunday morning – the roads were empty.

Getting back home was not much of a problem either, except for the fact that the swell guys who plow our lots plowed everyone in. I used a garbage pail someone kindly left in the lot to dig out. A little diggin’, a little rockin’, no problem. I passed the pail on to the drivers next to me.

One person in a pickup with a plow just kept driving through the lot. I guess he expected people to hold up $20 bills. I gave him something better, a prayer.

When I got home I had quite the climb, just to get in my driveway. I’m 6’2″ and the snow at the end of the driveway was up to my shoulders.

After dinner I got to the task of snow blowing. Found out that I only had one tank of gas in the snow blower. That took care of half the driveway. I took a quick run over to the local Mobil for a fill-up, got back, and finished the job. A beer, some Smokehouse Almonds, and a little American Idol and all was well…

Tim Hardaway to blog for John Edwards?

Basketball retiree Tim Hardaway went on a tirade against homosexuals today (see Hardaway Banished for Anti-Gay Tirade), confusing these folks homosexuality with their humanity, basically saying I hate their homosexuality therefore I hate them.

Mr. Hardaway may receive inquiries from Presidential candidate John Edwards. He needs a new blogger because his team of anti-Catholic bloggers quit (see Second John Edwards Staffer Resigns Over Attacking Catholics on Abortion).

I can see John Edwards saying the following of Mr. Hardaway, can’t you?

The tone and the sentiment of some of Amanda Marcotte’s and Melissa McEwan’s posts [Mr. Hardaway’s statements] personally offended me. It’s not how I talk to people, and it’s not how I expect the people who work for me to talk to people. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but that kind of intolerant language will not be permitted from anyone on my campaign, whether it’s intended as satire, humor, or anything else. But I also believe in giving everyone a fair shake.

Fair shake – but only for protected hate speech.

Here’s news… not

From EarthTimes – Report: Majority of Catholic priests in Poland want right to marry

Warsaw (dpa) – Sixty per cent of Roman Catholic priests in overwhelmingly Catholic Poland want the right the marry and have families of their own, according to a survey published by Poland’s respected Tygodnik Powszechny (TP) weekly.

As times change and the social status of and respect for the priesthood declines, more and more priests who feel lonely, isolated and misunderstood are considering leaving the priesthood, according to the weekly, which caters for Poland’s Catholic intelligentsia.

“Not everyone can cope with the fact that at the beginning of the 21st century priests are no longer regarded as the priest they knew in their youth,” Jesuit Father and psychologist Jacek Prusak told TP.

But according to an as yet unpublished study, so far only one third of young priests who quit the priesthood do so for the sake of a woman.

“The main reason (for quitting the priesthood ) are existential problems and ideals,” according to the study’s author Professor Jozef Baniak of Poznan’s Adam Mickiewicz university. “A woman, if she appears, is in the background.”

“First there is an crisis of the priest’s identity and then he looks for someone in whom he can confide his problem,” says Baniak.

Vatican statistics quoted by TP also show more and more Polish priest are deciding to quit. Whereas in 1998, some 32 priests left, in 2004 the figure shot up to 57…

Not news because many Polish R.C. priests are ‘married,’ just not in the legal sense. They have women and children, often provided for out of the coffers of the local parish, or in extreme cases, out of the diocese. Scandal erupts only when a priest leaves to do the right thing – that is he legally marries his wife and supports his wife and children. He stands by her as husband and father.

Unfortunately, far too many choose the easy road. Oh, honey, I can’t marry you. Look at my great job, the cars, the money, the clothes, the vacations, the status. But it’s ok, we’ll be together on certain evenings and every other weekend. Tell the kids I do care.

It’s a total fallacy. It’s playing to a man’s base instincts, have fun, don’t commit.

Choosing to leave the R.C. priesthood in Poland puts one at a severe disadvantage. Start with the family pressure, the social pressures in the local community, and the hint of scandal… The women (those who actually hold these men to a higher standard) are poorly regarded in comparison to those who take it and shut-up. In addition, the financial losses alone are huge – another base instinct that must be fought against if the man wishes to do right.

And, by-the-way, it is not the woman’s fault.

The 57 who left are the honest ones, the ones who take their faith seriously. The others who remain, seeking the right to marry, are simply seeking a normalization of what already exists.

These men are having problems with their identity, as Prof. Baniak points out, not because of an inherent disorder, but because the identity they live in is disordered to their natural calling – marriage, a spouse, and children.

As I’ve said before, celibacy is a gift given to some, not a gift that can be demanded of the Holy Spirit. Once the R.C. Church gets beyond demanding that its men ‘receive’ this gift, perhaps the gift will be given more freely.

Faith you know.

Deacon dustup

The commentary across blogs over the recent conflict in the R.C. Diocese of Buffalo goes on.

Michael Liccione of Sacramentum Vitae has a pretty balanced take on this issue in Buffaloed. He comments on the root causes of the frustration felt by that deacon in Buffalo and lays the charge squarely at the feet of negligent pastors and weak bishops.

Babsnc of Daily Kos goes the way of the rest of the ultra-liberal elite. If you’re in a church or a member of a church please shut-up (ok, no please was said or intended, just shut-up). Only Babsnc and friends have rights, people of faith have none, Churches have none. See House Rep. Criticized by Deacon /During memorial mass/ for Yes Vote on Stem Cell Research. It appears, unbeknown to me, that the Founding Fathers intended that free speech rights only apply to some. We’re all equal on the farm, some are just more equal than others.

The writer concludes by making a plea for decency – if only that plea were made on behalf of innocent children.

The Society and politics Blog sticks a pin in Babsnc argument in Deacon calls out CINO*. The other pertinent quote taken from a commentator at The Cafeteria is Closed is:

WE NEED MORE PRIESTS LIKE THIS DEACON!

Of course, those neo-con Catholics who frequent sites like Cafeteria should understand that that would mean giving up the celibate priesthood… ooops.

*CINO = Catholic in name only

Blair and Catholics

British Prime Minister Tony Blair will not grant an exemption from compliance with ‘gay’ rights laws for faith based organizations who provide about 30% of the adoption services in Britain, often dealing with the most difficult to place children. From Ekklesia UK: Blair confirms that Catholic adoption agencies will not be able to discriminate.

The UK government has announced there will be no exemption from anti-discrimination laws for Catholic adoption agencies, but that they will get 21 months to prepare for change, which will make it illegal to discriminate against lesbian and gay people.

Prime Minister Tony Blair, himself a practicing Anglican married to a Catholic, called the outcome “a sensible compromise”. The Catholic Church in England and Wales said it was “deeply disappointed” that no exemption had been offered.

The 2006 Equality Act will face a vote in Parliament in February before coming into effect on 6 April 2007.

A spokesperson for the Lesbian and Gay Christian Movement told Ekklesia this evening that the decision looked like a —reasonable outcome overall—. Secular groups and the Liberal Democrats have said that the change period is too long.

It remains to be seen whether Catholic adoption agencies will eventually hand their service over to others in the voluntary sector. A similar thing has happened in the USA, after pressure from the Vatican.

Mr Blair commented: “There is no place in our society for discrimination. That’s why I support the right of gay couples to apply to adopt like any other couple. [This is why] there can be no exemptions for faith-based adoption agencies offering public funded services from regulations that prevent discrimination.”

No place for discrimination, except against people of faith, and faith based organizations, who abide by their Church’s teachings. See particularly Now, all our English liberties are becoming orphans by William Rees-Mogg in The Times:

The issue of the Roman Catholic adoption agencies, and their refusal to arrange adoptions for same-sex partnerships, I find altogether fascinating. It involves fundamental questions of liberty, of freedom of religion, of European law and of political philosophy. In our collapsing political society it may prove to be only one week’s wonder, but it is important to think it through.

Of deacons, polls, and charity

The Buffalo News has featured two reports over the past two days regarding a R.C. deacon who publicly reproved Congressman Brian Higgins from the ambo (pulpit) last Sunday.

From today’s report: Deacon hailed for pulpit blast at Higgins

The Buffalo Regional Right to Life Committee on Wednesday hailed a deacon who criticized Rep. Brian Higgins during Sunday Mass in St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church.

Deacon Tom McDonnell’s rebuke of the Buffalo Democrat for voting for federal funding for embryonic stem cell research led Higgins to walk out of the church during his sermon.

“God bless the deacon a thousand times. He did his job. If every bishop, every clergy member of all faiths did their jobs, we wouldn’t have the shedding of innocent life in our country,” said Stacey Vogel of the Buffalo Regional Right to Life Committee.

The anti-abortion group’s position was in stark contrast with the phone calls and e-mails at Higgins’ Buffalo and Washington offices, which were running in his favor by a nearly 4 to 1 ratio, according to a staff member.

According to the latest polls people deem the earth to be flat – therefore it must be.

Higgins said his relationship with St. Thomas Aquinas Church, where he was baptized and married, is “very deep, very meaningful and very long.” He apologized earlier for the congregation’s having to be subjected to criticism of him during the morning Mass.

“The lesson here is that the Catholic Church has enough problems and should take greater care before allowing nonpriests to use the church as a forum to advance what clearly was a political agenda,” Higgins said…

Based on his long and loving relationship with the Church he has stepped to the fore in opposing attacks on human life… oops, maybe not.

Also, I see that he has taken a strong interest in his faith and that he has been properly catechized. See, there’s priests and non-priests, that’s about all there is to my faith. Also, life is a subjective good and no one can tell me what to do, unless of course they let Senator Clinton or some other womyn preach – and I’ll make an exception for Michael J. Fox.

All this being said, I do believe the deacon was wrong for the following reasons:

  • The deacon is not the pastor. Mr. Higgins’ pastor is the Rev. Art Smith, and as pastor this responsibility falls to him. The problem with some deacons (me especially) is that we want to step-up and fill-in wherever and whenever we see something lacking. We are not the answer. We need to be more humble, more in tune with our ministry, and this is a good reminder of that fact.
  • The homily serves two purposes, cracking open the scriptures in such a way so as to edify and teach all the people you minister to, and as a call to apply that scripture to our everyday lives. It is not an occasion for political showmanship or the airing of one’s personal grievances, regardless of how in-tune those grievances are with Church teaching.
  • Charity, scripture, and Catholic polity demand that one reprove one’s brother in private first, then in front of witnesses, and finally, if he is obstinate, before the community. If that communal reproof is to have any meaning it must come from the Church’s representative in the community – the Bishop.

In conclusion, the lack of leadership on the part of some Bishops and pastors and their acquiescence to political power provide fertile soil for these types of events. They also make taking sides in issues like this the go-to thing to do.

From the original story: Pulpit barb prompts walkout by Higgins

A deacon upbraided Rep. Brian Higgins during Sunday morning Mass in St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church for voting in favor of embryonic stem cell research, prompting the congressman and his family to walk out during the sermon.

The Rev. Art Smith, pastor of the South Buffalo church, said he felt “horrible” about the Higgins family’s departure on “Respect Life Sunday” and offered an apology from the pulpit after the congressman had left.

Bishop Edward U. Kmiec of the Catholic Diocese of Buffalo later issued a statement also criticizing Deacon Tom McDonnell’s action.

“I can’t tell you how terrible I felt,” Smith said Tuesday. “While we have to always uphold the church’s teachings regarding life, I don’t think it’s ever fair to publicly criticize someone who serves our community and our parish so well.”

The right-to-life community, with the deacon will be on one side, the congressman – obviously obdurate in error will be on the other, and the leaders of the Church will appear to be weak on the sanctity of life.

Please, pray for the protection of all human life and for us deacons.

Raise your voices, cry onto the Lord

Roe v. Wade – the march of death goes on. So raise your voices today and every day.

Lord have mercy on us and on our nation for we have sinned grievously.

It’s not just abortion, but our wanton rush toward death as an answer for every problem. War, put ’em out of their misery (especially those without a voice such as handicapped children and the mentally retarded), euthanasia, the death penalty, war again. It is the Pandora’s box of death.

Beseeching the Lord to save oneself or those one loves was not enough. Now we must pray, O man, kill me and my kin. Lead me into the grave and shut the door – there is no more.

So we pray, march, and witness. O Lord, save us and have mercy.

There’s some great stuff out in the blogsphere on this. Fr. Jim Tucker covers it well in Abortion and Freedom.

Current Events, Perspective,

Life in all its beauty

Just when you thought that the lowest common denominator had been reached, stories continue to appear pointing out that “stem cells” can be used to make people look youthful and to rebuild their missing teeth

Of course you have to dig into the stories to realize that they are talking about adult stem cells , the only truly effective stem cell therapies developed thus far (see Adult Stem Cells Spur Rush to Market, Avoid Bush’s Embryo Ban).

The Church has no problem with the use of adult stem cells or cord blood stem cells (if the baby has not been aborted), but there are those who will latch onto “the many uses of stem cells” and will try to make a case regarding embryonic stem cell research – all so they can benefit. They pass over the facts and draw general conclusions that make no sense – i.e., the Church is against people, the Church wants me to suffer, being beautiful and perfect is my right…

The interesting thing about these arguments is that those who take-up arms advocating for the position in opposition to life will be confounded. They argue from impatience and selfishness – and yes, killing a human being so you can benefit is always wrong.

In my opinion, this lack of patience and selfishness is rooted in a lack of faith in God, and I fully believe that those alleged Christians who advocate for abortion, embryonic stem cell research, the death penalty, and euthanasia have no faith in God. They are delusional.

To the point of the title of this post. Patience and the miracle of God’s creation provides a solution. To wit: New Source of Stem Cells (and here).

ORLANDO, Fla. (Ivanhoe Newswire) — A new source of stem cells could one day mean anyone who needs engineered tissue will have a ready source. The research is still very early, but scientists say they are excited about the potential.

Researchers from Wake Forest University School of Medicine in Durham, N.C., report stem cells capable of creating several different kinds of tissue can be taken from amniotic fluid in the wombs of pregnant women.

Stem cells have the capacity to become any kind of cell in the body. Under the right conditions, the cells can become long muscle cells, throbbing heart cells, or brain cells producing neurotransmitters.

“It’s still too early to think of these cells for human use. We’re still in the research phase,” Wake Forest researcher Anthony Atala, M.D., told Ivanhoe. “But we’re certainly working in that direction.”

Dr. Atala and his colleagues were able to separate stem cells from amniotic fluid and placentas. Researchers used left over fluid gathered from amniocentesis tests, done to certain genetic disorders in the developing fetus. Cells can also be gathered from the placenta after birth.

The successful isolation of stem cells from this source means there is a more reliable source of cells for research and potential therapies. “We are dealing with a resource that is widely available because there are over 4.5 million births per year in the [United States],” said Dr. Atala. Before now, some stem cells came from discarded embryos created for in vitro fertilization. Many oppose the use of these cells, arguing it encourages destroying unborn children.

Dr. Atala says taking cells from the placenta, or the afterbirth, causes no risk to mother or child…

Lets see – more useful, more reliable, widely available, no danger, no abortion, no death.

All I could think of is this quote:

Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in my house, and try me in this, saith the Lord: if I open not unto you the flood-gates of heaven, and pour you out a blessing even to abundance. — Malachi 3:10

Our prayer and trust in God is our tithe. He asks us to try Him by placing our full trust in Him. When we do, He will keep His promise and pour out blessings upon us in abundance.

God has created life in all its richness. When we choose God’s way, which is life, all of our real needs are met, and met in abundance.
