From a home in Poland, to a Siberian Gulag, to freedom and family

Just 12 years old when Soviet soldiers swarmed his east Poland town and deported his family to a forced-labor camp, Adam Szymel tells an amazing story of survival.

Sometimes people ask Adam Szymel about his education. He tells them that he has a doctorate in “life experience.”

The 82-year-old Western Springs resident has indeed worn many hats in his time: naval quartermaster, Chicago immigrant factory worker, Berywn hardware store owner. But if his life experience were a degree, Szymel did much of his study as a child in the desolate hell of a Soviet logging camp, battling unimaginable odds to preserve what was left of his family.

He was 12. He had just seen his father led away in cuffs by Russian soldiers, and would never see him again. Along with his mother, grandmother, two sisters and a brother, he suddenly found himself aboard a freight train headed to the icy wastelands of Siberia, where they would all face brutal working conditions, disease, freezing and starvation—each more likely than the other to take their lives.

This was the beginning of an incredible odyssey for Adam Szymel—one that would, astonishingly, carry him, his mother and his siblings through the war alive, and eventually bring him and his descendants to the leafy avenues of Western Springs, where he would pen his personal account of what he calls a “blessed” life.

A stolen childhood

“The most important date of my life is Jan. 21, 1928. I don’t know if this winter day was sunny or cloudy, warm or cold, snowy or rainy, but the day was very important. That day my eyes first saw the light of day.”

Today, Szymel does not wear the scars of his past on his face. He is smiling, gregarious, talkative and a regular presence at exercise classes at the Western Springs Senior Center, where he is always among friends. But there is a dark solemnity in his voice when he speaks of the calamity that befell both his family and his homeland in September of 1939—when Poland was simultaneously invaded by the German Nazi blitzkrieg from the west and the Soviet war machine from the east.

Until then, young Adam had enjoyed an idyllic childhood in the east Polish town of Nowogrodek. His father was a World War I veteran and veterinarian-turned-butcher. Adam was a passionate artist and soccer player, as well as a strong student and an altar boy. Then the Russian tanks swept it all away.

Soviet soldiers marched into Nowogrodek and established a reign of terror, Szymel says. His father was arrested—he had fought the Russians in 1920 under the Polish hero Marshal Pilsudski—and imprisoned, eventually disappearing completely to an unknown fate.

It got worse. By February of 1940, the Soviets decided they needed the Szymels’ home—without the remaining Szymels. Adam, his sisters Zosia and Lala, and his little brother Zbyszek, along with their mother and grandmother, were placed on a freight train line headed east, confused and frightened, with no knowledge of what lay ahead.

When Adam writes of this time, he says he wants to remind people that the costs of war go beyond the battlefield.

“I want to open people’s eyes, especially young people, to how terrible war can be, and to, especially during the war, who suffers the most,” he says. “It’s not the soldiers. It’s the women, usually, and children, of the countries the war is being fought on.”

His father was already a casualty. The trial of the women and children had just begun.

The camp of slow death

“In the forest now and then, especially at night, you could hear what sounded like an explosion. Those were frozen trees splitting open… Hunger overpowered a person’s every sense. It is not just a pain in your belly; you think about food, you dream about eating… Those who lost the will to live did not last long.”

The word “hell” comes up a lot in regard to the Rzawka logging camp. Traditionally, hell is a place of fire. But as Robert Frost once wrote of the end of the world, “for destruction ice/is also great/and would suffice.” Ice—along with hunger and sickness—would take many lives in that camp.

It did not destroy Adam Szymel’s, nor those of his surviving family, a miracle Szymel credits to many things, including in large part his strong Catholic faith.

“My faith is has always been important to me, but going through the hell of life in a country that was godless at that time even strengthens [it,]” he says. “We don’t have much control of what happens to us. But God does, and that’s why I do believe in God, and I felt his presence many, many times when the time was desperate, just to survive.”

The camp’s horrors could easily have broken a lesser heart. Szymel tells of temperatures that could drop from 20 to 60 degrees below zero, especially at night; in even slightly warmer times, plagues of mosquitoes and beetles would swarm the eyes and mouths of the prisoners. Camp inmates lived on a starvation ration of 300 grams of black bread daily, plus whatever they could forage, and whatever packages the Soviets would let them receive from Poland. More crosses appeared in a makeshift cemetery daily.

Adam’s mother was forced to do fiercely hard work carrying water, while he and the camp’s other children were schooled in Communist propaganda. (As he writes in his memoir, he didn’t buy a word of it—instead singing patriotic Polish songs and attending secret religion classes taught by a nun in the camp, even convincing a friendly Russian mail girl named Lisa to attend.) But when the harsh labor finally left their mother too sick and exhausted to work, the family had even their meager rations stripped as punishment.

Szymel’s daughter, Christine Dudzik, a Western Springs resident, knows this story well, and helped him edit his memoir.

“It’s one of those things where sometimes you look at life and say, ‘Things are hard,'” she says. “But this makes you take it in perspective and say, ‘Well, that was hard.’ You wish nobody would ever have to go through something like that.”

To save his family, in January 1941, Szymel and his little brother (with the permission of the camp commandant) dragged a homemade sled 17 miles through the harsh, snowy winter to barter their possessions for potatoes and other food. It was a defining moment for the boys—”a deed worthy of grown-ups,” Szymel writes.

Steps towards liberty

“I will never forget the first time my outfit was marched to the regimental kitchen for my first meal there. I was given a mess tin full of rice with raisins. I was so hungry I thought I would eat it all, but after a few spoonfuls, I could not eat any more. My stomach had shrunk; there was no room. I just sat there and cried.”

The first step on the long road to renewed freedom for the Szymels came from a most unlikely source: Adolf Hitler.

Hitler, of course, didn’t care a whit about the Szymels. But when the Nazis invaded Russia in the summer of 1941, Soviet priorities changed. Families were freed from the camp, but with limited options. A long, dangerous quest to escape Soviet Russia into Uzbekistan awaited them, fraught with further danger and death from hunger and typhus.

Szymel says it was the desire for freedom that brought them through the difficult journey once again.

“Human beings cannot live without freedom,” he says. “It is like fresh air or a drink of water—freedom is something that people for thousands of years fought and died for. And that is why sometimes, when I talk to young people, I stress: Don’t take freedom for granted.”

Upon finally reaching Kermine in Uzbekistan in mid-1942, Szymel joined the orchestra of the expatriate Polish army’s 22nd regiment. While life remained brutal—typhoid nearly killed his older sister, and dysentery his brother—the family persevered, eventually reaching British soil and true freedom in Persia (Iran).

Six Szymel family members had been shipped to Siberia—six came out alive.

“I consider it a miracle,” Adam says.

He returned to school in Palestine, and later began training to join the Polish Merchant Navy, only to sadly watch as his homeland fell behind the Iron Curtain. After a few years sailing in the Middle East on a British vessel, in 1954 he took the next best option—the United States. All the family survivors except his grandmother eventually settled in Chicago.

It turned out to be a phenomenal decision, as the hard-working Szymel quickly rose from a factory worker position to being a manufacturing plant superintendent, and eventually the owner of a Berwyn hardware store. He fell in love with a Polish girl named Wanda; they married and had two children, Christine and Stefan. In 1985, the entire family moved to Western Springs.

“If I could only have words to express how wonderful this country has been to me and my family, and especially the people who made me feel at home,” Szymel says. “American people who made me feel part of a community… have been so important to me, and I will keep saying that as long as I live.”

Adam Szymel has no plans to publish his memoir—it’s mostly important to him that his friends and family know his story. But he’ll happily share a copy with anyone who asks. After all, he’s not shy about his life. On the contrary: he’s at peace with the way things turned out in the end.

“By God, I lived my life to the fullest,” he says. “The experience I had in my life would last for quite a few lifetimes.”

A year of remembrance for two Polish greats

2010 marked the Year of Frederick Chopin. The year 2010 was the 200th anniversary of the birth of this eminent figure. There were great celebrations and concerts as well as piano competitions throughout the world and in particular in Poland in his honor.

We also celebrated another important figure in the history of arts, literature, and particularly poetry in Poland, Maria Konopnicka. 2010 marked the 100th anniversary of her passing. Maria Konopnicka is beloved of the Polish National Catholic Church in particular. Bishop Hodur established societies in her honor, as well in honor of Juliusz Słowacki, so as to promote literature and arts among Polish immigrants to the United States.

October 8, 2010 marks the 100th anniversary of the death of Poland’s great poetess, Maria Konopnicka. It was at the time of her death in 1910 that our beloved Organizer, the late Prime Bishop Franciszek Hodur was in Poland and learned of the death of this great woman after whom he had already organized societies in his church in the United States. The Roman Church refused her burial considering her an enemy and heretic because she had the courage to speak and write of the evils in the Church of Rome and its exploitation of the poor.

The family of the late poetess learned of the presence of Prime Bishop Hodur in Poland and requested that he conduct the funeral service. However, after hearing of this, the Roman hierarchy had changed its mind and decided to conduct the funeral service for her. Bishop Hodur presented his message and placed a large wreath with the inscription: “To Poland’s Great Poetess from the Polish National Catholic Church in the United States.”

The late Prime Bishop Francis Hodur in his introductory comments to the first volume of poetry published by the United Ladies’ Maria Konopnicka Societies in Scranton, PA, in 1946 said:

“Maria Konopnicka is not only the greatest poetess of the Polish people, but we can say without exaggeration, that she is the greatest poet of the human race. Before her, three women have gained fame as poets, namely: Deborah, living in the 11th century before Christ, living in that era which was known as the period of Judges; Sapphonia, living near the end of the 7th century on the island of Lesbos in Greece, and Ada Negri, living at the end of the 19th century in Italy and a contemporary of Maria Konopnicka.

History tells us that Deborah was a prophetess a judge and a poet. She wrote patriotic songs calling the Jewish people to fight for their freedom and liberty; these songs were sung either by her when she led the soldiers into battle, or by others designated by her.

Sapphonia was a poet of nature. She wrote beautiful poems about the mountains, the forests, the valleys and about all of those beautiful things which spoke to the human heart and soul and which were found on the island of Lesbos. She was persecuted to such an extent that she had to leave and return to southern Italy in order to save her life. After a few years, guided by the love of her home country, she returned to Lesbos and lived out her remaining years.

Ada Negri is truly the daughter of the Italian people. She was born into the family of a poor Italian workman. In spite of extraordinary material difficulties, she secured an adequate education and became a school teacher. She began to write and speak of the poverty of the Italian people. She spoke of the wrongs suffered by the Italian peasant and workman, and as a result of this, she lost her job as a school teacher and was persecuted. After the peasants and workmen received some recognition in the nation, she became very popular and was respected and even practically glorified by her people.

Maria Konopnicka united in her person the talents of the three mentioned immortal names. She was the poetess of her people. She did not lead her people into battle in the common meaning of the term as did Deborah, but she carried on the spiritual battle, calling for more education, equality of all people who constitute the nation, and prophesied victory for the Polish people when justice among them would be satisfied. She loved the natural beauty of the Polish landscape, the glorious majesty of the Tatra Mountains, the fields, streams, the gardens and the villages and all of those things which would foster love for the Fatherland.

She was disillusioned and disgusted with a visit to the Church of St. Joachim in Rome in which were placed all the national standards of all nations of the world, but among which the standard of Poland was not evident. She wrote of this bitterly saying, “Upon these marble walls where even the schismatic Lutheran has his place, this holy martyr for the Christian cause, this sacred Poland has been erased from among the nations of the earth as though anathemized.From “Do braci zmartwychwstańców.”” In a poem concerning the Church of Rome she speaks thusly:

O Rome! . . . How you have disappointed
     me, Rome!
You have not spread your wings over
     the brood as the hen does
When in Jerusalem the hawks hovered
     over the chicks,
No, you have hid in the smoke of your
     thuribles,
And with the hawks you have made
     alliance.
In the brightness of the feathers of
     peacocks you
Permit yourself to be carried, basking in
     the glory
Which you have torn out of the garment
     of Christ!

Maria Konopnicka struggled for social justice; she was the mediatrix of her people. She wrote of the oppressed, of the disinherited, the orphan and the poverty of her fellowman. The words which she uttered in receiving the gift of a home and a little parcel of land in Zamowiec, a gift of the Polish people in appreciation for her labor, sufferings and work on their behalf, could be interpreted as her will and testament: “On this occasion,” she said, “what do we need? … Love for the earth. Confessors for an ideal, education for the people, respect for work, soldiers for an idea, triumph for truth, unity and equality for all!”

Her principles and ideals were so closely related to those of our beloved Organizer, the late Prime Bishop Francis Hodur. Both lived and struggled for freedom, truth, equality, justice, education, brotherhood and enlightenment; Both were warriors for great causes and issues! People of this caliber are not born daily but are providential! Let us cherish their work and continue on the mission they have begun for causes so noble and holy which will make our Country and our Church great, free, and unique!

Rally to Support Iraqi Christians

From the American Mesopotamian Organization, Justice in Iraq, the Iraqi Christian Relief Council, and the Seyfo Center U.S.A.: A Rally to Challenge the Obama Administration to Support and Protect Indigenous Assyrian Christians of Iraq

For the past seven years we have watched in stunned disbelief as savage Islamist extremist groups have continued to terrorize and murder Iraqi Christians. In the latest attacks, Al Qaeda-linked terrorists stormed the Syriac Catholic Cathedral in Baghdad during Mass, killing the priests in front of their parishioners, and children in front of their parents. On November 2nd the same group announced that all infidels in Iraq should be prepared to die. Enough is Enough!

We, the undersigned organizations, demand that the Obama Administration immediately pressure the government of Iraq to protect its most persecuted citizens. To date, the Obama Administration has failed to even acknowledge that Iraqi Christians are being murdered specifically because of their faith and ethnic heritage. They are the descendants of the Assyrians and Babylonians, who were the first converts to Christianity outside Jerusalem in the 1st century A.D., and still speak Aramaic, the language of Jesus. Their plight is shared by other defenseless Iraqis, including the Yazidis, Sabean Mandaeans and Shebeks.

Currently, under Article 125 of the Iraqi Constitution, Iraq’s Christians and other indigenous Iraqis have the legal right to practice their faith, and the right to establish a specific province in which they might live peacefully as citizens of Iraq. We ask the U.S. government to pressure the Iraqi government and Kurdish Regional Government (KRG) to remove the obstacles and fully implement Article 125 so that Iraq’s Christians will not be terrorized to extinction.

Join us this Saturday, in Lafayette Park, Washington DC, from 12:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M., along with groups from across the nation to demand, with a loud and unified voice, that the Obama Administration must act now and pressure the government of Iraq and the Kurdish Regional Government (KRG) to protect all of their citizens!

From the Institute on Religion & Democracy: IRD Urges Prayer, Advocacy for Afghani and Iraqi Christians

The Institute on Religion and Democracy is urging an end to persecution of Christians in Afghanistan and Iraq. The organization also encourages Washington, DC area residents to show solidarity with these beleaguered Christians at a rally sponsored by Iraqi American Christians for “Justice in Iraq” at noon, Saturday, December 4, at the White House’s Lafayette Park. The rally will call upon the respective governments to ensure that the rights and freedoms of the indigenous minorities in Iraq are honored and protected.

Two Afghani Christian converts, Said Musa (45) and Ahmad Shah (50) are in prison awaiting trial on the death penalty charge of “apostasy” from Islam. The Christian population of Iraq is under threat from Islamic jihadists following the latest atrocity, a massacre of Christians at Our Lady of Salvation Catholic Church, Baghdad, on October 31, 2010.

Musa and Shah were arrested May 31 with other converts after footage of a baptismal service was viewed on national television. Witnesses report that Musa has been beaten, tortured, and sexually abused on a daily basis.

Al Qaeda-connected jihadists have told Iraq’s Christians and other “infidels” to “prepare to die.” This threat followed the attack on Baghdad Christians at Sunday mass which left 58 dead. The Assyrian/Chaldean/Syriac Christians trace their ancestry back 7,000 years to the ancient Mesopotamians.

IRD Religious Liberty Director Faith J.H. McDonnell commented:

“America has given billions of dollars, and, more importantly, given precious American lives, to bring freedom and democracy to the people of Afghanistan and Iraq. But this must include freedom and democracy for our Christian brothers and sisters and other indigenous minorities, as well.

In 2006, the international community was outraged when Afghan Christian convert Abdul Rahman faced the death penalty. His life was saved because of the outcry. These Iraqi Christians, who are being hunted like animals by the Islamists, still speak Aramaic, the language that Jesus spoke. We must stand with them in their hour of peril.”

Thanksgiving 2010

We give Thee our most humble and hearty thanks, O God, for blessings without number which we have received from Thee, for all Thy goodness and loving kindness, for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life. And, we beseech Thee, give us that due sense of all Thy mercies, that our hearts may be truly thankful for all things, and that we show forth Thy praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up ourselves to Thy service and by walking before Thee in holiness and righteousness all our days. John Guzlowski posted a poem for Thanksgiving at Lightning and Ashes. It begins:

My people were all poor people,
the ones who survived to look
in my eyes and touch my fingers
and those who didn’t, dying instead

of fever or hunger or a bullet
in the face, dying maybe thinking
of how their deaths were balanced
by my birth or one of the other

stories the poor tell themselves
to give themselves the strength
to crawl out of their own graves.

It is stark, and fitted to our times.

From CNN: More Americans filing for unemployment

The number of Americans filing for first-time unemployment benefits rose by 2,000 in the latest week, pointing to continued weakness in the job market, the government reported Thursday.

The number of initial filings rose to 439,000 in the week ended Nov. 13, the Labor Department said. The number was slightly better than the 442,000 economists surveyed by Briefing.com had expected, but higher than the revised 437,000 initial claims filed the week before.

Overall, the weekly number has been treading water since last November, hovering in the mid to upper 400,000s and even ticking slightly above 500,000 in mid-August.

Economists often say the number needs to fall below 400,000, before the stubbornly high unemployment rate can start dropping significantly…

While Congress (various sources): Fails To Extend UI Benefits – Program Faces Lapse By November 30

On November 18th, the House of Representative failed to pass a three month extension of emergency unemployment benefits (EUC08) setting up the possibility the program will lapse once again on November 30.

Plunging over 2 million people into hopeless economic uncertainty. No lifeline, no paycheck, no jobs — nothing by which they might feed their families, pay for housing, or sustain themselves till the one job for every five people becomes theirs.

The hope for that happening is slim, at least for 6 years at the best estimate. From Money Morning via NuWire: Pre-Recession Unemployment Rates Won’t Be Seen Until At Least 2016

Stocks are up nearly 70% from their bear market lows. Corporate profits are rising. And the economy is expanding. Yet the unemployment rate continues to hover around 10%.

Neither President Barack Obama’s $787 billion stimulus program, nor the U.S. Federal Reserve’s quantitative easing has generated enough good news to convince companies to hire meaningful numbers of new workers.

Of the 8.7 million people who lost their jobs during the recession, more than 7.3 million are still without work. There are still nearly five job seekers for every job opening. In fact, adding in workers who are working part time but looking for full-time work and those who have given up looking all together brings the “real” unemployment rate to a staggering 17% compared to 16.5% last year, the latest government report shows.

And even though private sector payrolls increased by 151,000 in October – bringing the number of jobs created since the economy bottomed in December 2009 to 1.1 million -the share of the population working or looking for work declined to 64.5%, its lowest level since 1984.

The Great Recession has spawned some truly unique – and ugly – economic offspring. But one trend has emerged that sets it apart from most economic downturns: the swelling ranks of the long-term unemployed.

The number of people who’ve been collecting unemployment benefits for at least six months increased by more than 100% in 40 states over the last two years, according to an analysis of unemployment insurance data compiled by National Employment Law Project (NELP).

The number of long-term unemployed (those jobless for 27 weeks and over) stood at 6.2 million in October. Those folks now account for 41.8% of the 14.8 million unemployed workers in the country.

“Long term unemployment is more than ever the norm of a layoff , and it’s across the country and across the economy that this is happening,” Andrew Stettner of NELP told the Huffington Post.

The reality of long-term unemployment is even worse than the numbers suggest.

“This is certainly a crisis of huge proportion and it is reflected in an extraordinary number of people unemployed for a very long time,” wrote Lawrence Mishel, president of the Economic Policy Institute, in an email to the HuffPost. “It’s even worse than that because we’re seeing a large withdrawal from the job market and one can assume that this is among those who have been unemployed a long time — giving up.”

This trend is important because long-term unemployment feeds on itself.

There are a series of consequences that follow long-term unemployed workers far into the future. Job skills deteriorate, job networks disappear, and workers lose hope. The longer a worker is unemployed the less likely he or she is to find a new job and the more likely it is they will find only a lower-paying job.

“People lose job skills, they become unemployable,” said Dean Baker, co-director of the Center for Economic and Policy Research. “It becomes a real long-term problem. People in their late 40s and 50s who end up out of work for long periods of time may drop out of the work force and never get another regular job.”

There are also other – less obvious – consequences of long-term unemployment. According to recent research, job displacement can lead to significant reductions in life expectancy . Other research shows that the children of these workers earn less when they become adults and enter the labor force.

The specter of long-term unemployment will sustain the unemployment rate as the skills of idled workers deteriorate and segments of the labor force are compelled to retrain or move out of the areas of the country that were propped up by the housing bubble. The likely result is that the unemployment rate will fall at only a gradual pace.

To determine how long the recovery will take this time, the Brookings Institution recently examined the “job gap,” or the number of months it would take to get back to pre-recession employment levels while absorbing the 125,000 people who enter the labor force each month.

The results show that even under the most optimistic scenarios, it will take years to eliminate the job gap.

If the economy adds about 208,000 jobs per month, the average monthly rate for the best year of job creation in the 2000s, it will take 142 months, or about 12 years to close the job gap.

At a more optimistic rate of 321,000 jobs per month, the average monthly rate for the best year of the 1990s, the economy will reach pre-recession employment levels in 60 months, or about 5 years.

Here’s the takeaway: Based on the history, pre-recession unemployment rates won’t be seen again until at least 2016, and in all probability much later, as idled workers find it harder and harder to land jobs.

Also, if you are unemployed, certain elitist, undereducated, and reactionary segments of society cast the blame squarely on your shoulders. They think you’re banking the money for a lavish vacation and a grope from your local TSA agent. Of course reality is different, one job for every five workers, and that UI benefit money gets spent on the basic needs of life, preventing a horrific dip into poverty.   • Almost half of families in which at least one person was unemployed received income from UI in 2009. In 2009, the median contribution of UI benefits to the income of families that received those benefits was $6,000, accounting for 11 percent of their family income that year.
  • Without the financial support provided to families by UI benefits and under an assumption of no change in employment or other sources of income associated with the absence of that support, the poverty rate and related indicators of financial hardship would have been higher in 2009 than they actually were. For instance, in 2009 the poverty rate was 14.3 percent, whereas without UI benefits and with no behavioral responses taken into account, it would have been 15.4 percent.

But who cares about studies and research when we are simply angered because our neighbor is in need. Not too long ago we would have invited that family in. We would have fed and clothed them (Matthew 25:40). Now, who cares! Not businesses like Giant Food, the Thanksgiving Grinch, because someone may be slowed on the way to the cash register.

For many of us, it’s a Thanksgiving tradition to drop a few coins in the Salvation Army’s red kettle outside our local grocery.

It’s quick, easy, and has real impact – last year, more than $139 million was raised by red kettles to provide services ranging from hot meals to warm beds for homeless and impoverished Americans.

This year the need is greater than ever, with more than 44 million Americans on food stamps. But because of the objection of a large grocery store chain, the residents of poverty-stricken Washington, D.C. are at risk of going without essential holiday services.

Giant Food, a major supermarket chain in Washington D.C. and several surrounding states, just issued new regulations severely limiting red kettle fundraisers. Why? “In order to best serve our customers, and not hinder their shopping experience,” a Giant Food representative said in a statement.

Donating to the needy might not be at the top of everyone’s shopping list, but that’s why physical reminders of the importance of giving are needed. Caught up in the commotion of our own lives, we can all use help overcoming the distractions and indifference that prevents us from helping to alleviate suffering in our communities.

Tell Giant to offer more than a bargain, but hope as well. Tell Congress to actually do something for the long term unemployed, that is, other than posturing.

Oh, and if you are working; watch over your shoulder because employers are stealing their worker wages at an alarming rate. From the Albany Times Union: Wages belong to the workers

In New York City alone, a study by the National Employment Law Project earlier this year found that 21 percent of low-wage workers are paid less than the minimum wage, 77 percent weren’t paid time-and-a-half when they worked overtime, and 69 percent didn’t receive any pay at all when they came in early or stayed late after their shift.

We’re talking about the jobs that literally make our economy run — home care and child care workers, dishwashers, food prep workers, construction workers, cashiers, laundry workers, garment workers, security guards and janitors. Hundreds of thousands of them aren’t getting even the most basic protections that the rest of us take for granted.

And make no mistake, the problem isn’t going away: These types of jobs account for eight out of the top 10 occupations projected to grow the most by 2018.

Wage theft in New York is not incidental, aberrant or rare, committed by a few rogue employers. Over the last two years, the state Department of Labor has brought cases against restaurants in Ithaca, a printer in Albany, horse trainers at the Saratoga Race Course, hotels in Lake George and car washes across the state. Altogether, the agency recovered $28.8 million in stolen wages for nearly 18,000 New Yorkers in 2009 — the largest amount ever. That’s a valiant effort to be sure, but still not nearly enough to match the scale of the problem…when workers made a complaint to their employer or government agency, 42 percent experienced illegal retaliation — such as being fired or having their wages or hours cut. That is enough to discourage even the most committed worker from filing a wage theft claim.

[And r]ight now, it’s all too common that a worker successfully brings a wage theft claim, only to see the employer declare bankruptcy, leave town, close shop or otherwise evade paying up… In New York City alone, more than 300,000 workers are robbed of $18.4 million every week, totaling close to $1 billion a year. Extrapolate that to the state level, and you get a staggering amount of potential stimulus that’s being taken out of the pockets of working families and local businesses, and state coffers.

Even in good times, fighting wage theft is smart policy. In a recession, it’s such a no-brainer…

Our call as people of faith is to bring hope, to give hope, to recall in the minds of our brothers and sisters that all we have, even our poverty, is from the Lord, and to take action. We must remind all that God is about freedom and justice, not subservience and pain, and show our solidarity with those thrust into poverty, hopelessness, joblessness, or who have their daily bread stolen out of their hands.

Today, the struggles are growing closer to those of 125 years ago. Our people no longer look to bright hope in tomorrow, but the hunger pains to come tomorrow. They are falling into a grave out of which they might not crawl.

As opposed to purveyors of the success gospel, or the gospel of monarchies of every type, we are aware our hard scrabble, blue collar background. Our Holy Church, the PNCC, gave hope to working men and women when all that was offered them were days of back breaking labor for little in wages and the company store. When their Churches were joined at the hip with the ruling classes and the government bureaucracy, we stood by their side on the picket line. What we offered then was education, literature, a better future, lived ideals based on God’s closeness to man, an expression of the freedom these men and women had as Americans. We showed them that they could join together in Unions, that they could worship God in truth and freedom. We taught them about our God who desires deeply to be joined to men and women in their lives, who communes with them in their work and struggle. Our God wants more than a fractional share of our pennies for others to administer, but true thanks from a free people joined to Him.

The hope of Jesus Christ, His peace, His presence, His justice, His tomorrow are more necessary than ever. Let us as a Church stand up and show the hope that is more than social services, more than mere charity and political posturing; the Church that is the hope of eternity, the hope of freedom and justice for a free people joined to Jesus Christ our brother. God stands with us. Let us give Him thanks and more — our action.

Parishioner discusses a church closing with her bishop

From FOX News 8 in Cleveland: ON TAPE: Bishop Lennon Recorded Talking About Church Closings

CLEVELAND — Behind closed doors, Bishop Richard Lennon, head of the [Roman Catholic] Diocese of Cleveland, is straightforward about the need to close churches.

“Let me be very blunt: why haven’t the people of Cleveland done this over the past years,” asked Bishop Lennon.

The bishop took part in a conversation back in May with Pat Schulte Singleton. She was a member of St. Patrick’s — a church on Cleveland’s west side that has since been closed.

Schulte Singleton was hoping to get the bishop to reverse that decision. She went to the meeting alone, and she recorded the conversation without his knowledge. Why?

“To have an accounting of what happened,” she says now. “When you go to talk to the bishop, especially Bishop Lennon, you’re a bit intimidated…”

A few things:

  • In most places people have a right to record conversations to which they are a party. I have no problem with Ms. Schulte Singleton’s doing so. It is her right.
  • The bishop hits all the right points on technical issues. Being catholic means more than just “place.” It also means a life of sacrifice. No one in the rest of the hierarchy will fault him on those points. You won’t likely get a co-adjutator or an apostolic administrator unless the Bishop goes completely off (becomes a heretic or a scandal to the Church) although the early change in Scranton looked to be a result of too heavy a hand by the R.C. Bishop there.
  • The Bishop is a good businessman who is cutting losses and moving to where his customers prefer to be (the suburbs). He knows the financials and the statistics.
  • He is equally wrong about place, because place is important, not just because of individual’s attachment to it, but because the presence of church and Christian witness changes the character of place. Yes church is more than place, but it is present in place and time to bring grace, life, and community.
  • He is absolutely wrong in his assessment of neighborhood change. If I were the folks living in, or moving into that neighborhood I would be deeply hurt by his attitude. I sense a subtle bigotry there. He could have just said, ‘I don’t want to minister to THOSE people in THAT neighborhood. I’ve written them off.’
  • The PNCC model works (as our Prime Bishop Emeritus often said – we have a gem of a Church because we are Catholic with a democratic form of governance) because parishioner ownership results in commitment to working for the home that no one can take from them. It allows parishioners to innovatively approach evangelization as well as solutions to issues. You would never hear – ‘we didn’t know about the financials,’ from the member of a PNCC Parish Committee (as opposed to Ms. Schulte Singleton noting that they didn’t know anything about assessments in arrears). Thanks be to God that the clergy in the PNCC can concentrate on the spiritual. You will never hear money preached from the pulpit. The people handle it and contribute toward what they own.
  • Whomever is hitting her people up for money to run appeals up the Vatican flag pole has quite the racket. Milk the dolts back in the states while we sip wine in Roma. O Solo Mio! The answer three years hence — Negato!

From the Irish Times: Composer of haunting ‘Symphony of Sorrows’

Henryk Górecki, who has died aged 76, was a Polish composer of classical music whose haunting Third Symphony, the Symphony of Sorrows, drew inspiration from an inscription scrawled on a Nazi prison wall during the second World War.

With its themes of war and separation in a slow, stark style, it became a surprise best-seller following a recording released in 1992 and given much airtime by the UK radio station, Classic FM.

The piece uses simple, spare settings of Polish materials – the late 15th-century Holy Cross Lament, the wartime graffiti and a folksong, and melody and words from the Opole region on Poland’s south-west border. This led some to identify in it a new spirituality filling a God-shaped space in an era bereft of previous certainties.

The 1992 recording by the London Sinfonietta under David Zinman, with the soprano Dawn Upshaw, that achieved international acceptance was written more than 15 years earlier in 1976.

Henryk Górecki was born at Czernica, near Rybnik, in Upper Silesia, near Poland’s coalmining area west of Katowice. His father worked in the goods office at a railway station. His mother died on her son’s second birthday, and the subsequent second World War years were made yet bleaker for Górecki by tubercular complications after a fall.

He worked as a teacher for two years after leaving school in 1951 before taking up regular music studies in Rybnik. After composition lessons in Katowice, he spent the last three months of 1961 in Paris, his first sustained release from the isolation of Katowice. But after his return from Paris, he remained mostly in Katowice, dogged by ill health, though he was in West Berlin for nine months in 1973-74 on a scholarship. From 1975 to 1979 he was rector of Katowice’s music school. Polish folksongs became a much more integral source of inspiration for him and were just as important as his attachment to Polish medieval and Renaissance music.

In the 1960s, he continued to write works that developed the frantic activity, percussive attack and new string techniques of Scontri: first in the Genesis cycle of works (1962-63), then in Refren (Refrain, 1965) for orchestra.

The composer’s First Symphony , subtitled 1959 , had deployed with a vengeance the sonic blocks typical of “texture music”. His Second Symphony was commissioned for the 500th anniversary in 1973 of the birth of the Polish astronomer Copernicus. It sets – in Latin, for soprano, baritone, chorus and orchestra – texts drawn from Psalms 136 and 146 and from the introduction of Copernicus’s treatise De Revolutionibus Orbium Caelestium.

Górecki’s embrace of modal materials redolent of their national and religious origins continued with Beatus Vir – psalm settings for baritone, chorus and orchestra…

This personal triumph to some degree offset his treatment at the hands of the communist Party, when he had been airbrushed out of all the records of the Katowice music school for a significant anniversary earlier that year.

Not everything that Górecki wrote during the last 30 years of his life was directly inspired by his Catholic faith and meditative style. References to a wide range of other musics – from Beethoven to 20th-century popular idioms – became a notable feature of the composer’s later output.

He once described himself as a recluse. He avoided the limelight yet still upset the authorities in other ways from time to time. In using modernist ideas Górecki demonstrated that it was possible for a late 20th-century composer to write music of individuality and substance while simultaneously achieving unusual success.

Criminal business enterprises steal wages

National Day of Action Against Wage Theft on Thursday, November 18th

  • 60 percent of nursing homes steal workers’ wages.
  • 78 percent of restaurants in New Orleans steal workers’ wages.
  • 100 percent of poultry plants steal workers’ wages.
  • Wage theft is too big a crime to solve?

Except for the last one, the numbers are all true. Imagine being robbed at the street corner when you have just enough money to get you through the day. Now, picture that happening to you day in and day out.

Unfortunately for too many workers, especially those in low-wage jobs, being robbed is a reality they face every day — at their own work place.

Billions of dollars are stolen from millions of workers each year, often forcing them to choose between paying the rent or putting food on the table.

Wage theft affects not only the workers and their families, but also robs from the government’s tax coffers, resulting in cutbacks of vital services. Wage theft also puts ethical employers at a competitive disadvantage and can destroy community businesses, as working families cannot spend wages they haven’t received. Wage theft hurts everyone!

On November 18, individuals and groups in more than 50 cities across the country will take action against wage theft. Please join in calling attention to this epidemic and mobilizing support for the various efforts to combat it, from new national legislation to creative local initiatives.

Wage theft is a crime we can solve. In the past year, there have been local victories that have impacted the lives of workers. A couple of months ago, two new pieces of legislation were introduced, one to curtail worker misclassification and one to strengthen community anti-wage theft programs. The time to join in and take action is now. Lend your voice and speak up for justice.

What Can You do on the National Day of Action?

Take Action Against a Wage Theft Perpetrator:

  • Conduct a bus tour of unethical businesses that steal wages
  • Organize a group to confront an employer to pay his workers; flyer the business’ customers
  • Hold a prayer vigil
  • Plan an action at a non-union contractor or employer that is stealing wages and undercutting union companies.

Host a “Know Your Rights” Educational Workshop with Workers

Highlight Local Ordinance or State Law Campaigns/Victories

  • Organize press events with legislation sponsors

National Independence Day (Narodowe Święto Niepodległości)

On November 18, 1918, after 123 years of occupation, the Polish state was reborn and regained its independence. November 11th marked the end of World War I and the defeat of all three occupiers. Russia was plunged into the confusion of revolution and civil war, the multinational Austro-Hungarian monarchy, held together by its government’s perpetuation of inter-ethnic conflicts as a means to divide and conquer, fell apart and went into decline. The Germans, of course, lost and were punished.

For Poles was their opportunity to reclaim their right as a nation, something they had continually fought for since they were invaded by the three occupying powers.

“Two dear little ones are sitting by me and begging for a tale. So I will tell the ladies and gentlemen a tale for children and grown-ups alike. “As much happiness as in a dream, as much truth as in a song.” So one man wrote, and we who read sometimes believe him and sometimes not. But today I tell you truly that there are charms and spells, so long as we are happy. Once I saw a crowd of children bending over something on the ground. Wondering what they could find to look at in a dirty courtyard, I espied a little frog. Filthy and frightened the frog hopped clumsily on its long legs and glared at the children with its goggle eyes.

“What are you gazing at?” I asked the little ones. One lad answered that he had read of a frog which was jumping about in the dirt, but suddenly by charms and spells, there came a great golden chariot drawn by six big horses. Six big lackeys held their bridles, and from the chariot ladies alighted dressed too gorgeously for words. They took a box from the chariot, and – oh! Charms and spells! The frog turned suddenly into a magic maiden, with lovely eyes and countenance.

The maiden looked at herself and marveled. For her robes were gleaming with pearly-white and rose color shot with gold and silver. Snow-white stockings covered her legs, which had been red with gold, but now were so warm that they gleamed like white marble through the silk. The dirty frog, transformed into a charming maiden took her place in the chariot and drove to a great white palace. The parquet mirrored her beauty, and maidens yellow with envy, whispered that she was an evil changeling. So there are charms and spells when a maiden is happy. They say that on earth there are no such tales.

I do not know if fairy-tales are true, but it is true that there are charms and spells when one is happy. I have heard with my own ears, I have seen with my own eyes, I have touched with my own fingers such charms and spells that of them I fear to speak. None of us, indeed, may have seen the dear child who was picking strawberries and suddenly espied a forest where, instead of branches, the trees grew cakes, ready to break off and eat. Who has seen the child who, as he hopped, found himself in an enchanted garden where magic birds chirped joyously between themselves? Or the dear girl in that garden where big juicy pears came of their own accord to her lips and red apples dropped into her pocket? Such, I believe, exist, and I will tell you about the wonder of wonders that I have touched and seen.

On a bright November day, not many years ago, along a road drowned everywhere in mud, a short grey serpent of lads big and small pressed forward. Like the clumsy frog, they wearily stumbled on, often stamping with frozen legs on the grey and marshy track. Poor fellows! They were hunched up and trembling with cold, their eyes dimmed by a toilsome night and many toilsome days. Their feet, soaked through their worn-out, mud-caked shoes, stumbled over the ground, lingering as though they clung to it for a moment’s rest. On the eleventh of November, they found themselves somewhere under the walls of Krakow. Before them rode another lad – rode on a young chestnut with a white-starred head.

The chestnut, daughter of the meadows, went mincingly into the town whence came those ragged lads, who now, as dirty as the earth itself, marched in. They had marched the whole night long, with death always staring them in the face. They had marched through the gate of death, through its strait and stifling portal. Like the frog, they longed to stumble into safety – safety within the walls of Krakow. But the country chestnut with the hairless head gazed on the city with disgust. When she reached the first houses, a scarecrow lorry came along, groaning and hissing, and she jibbed in terror. The lad upon her back caressed her and began to tell her of charms and spells. “Fear not, chestnut,” he murmured, “you are going into the capital, where thousands will gaze upon your lovely neck and golden hair.” For in Krakow there are charms and spells when a lad is happy, whether they be in the twin-towered church, or in the mighty bell, or in the crypt where kings for ever sleep, or in the hero’s or the poet’s tomb.

Not many years passed by, and the same chestnut gazed upon the same city on a new eleventh of November. Charm on charm and spell on spell – where were the grey and dirty lads, and where their leader? The same leader, but see how he has changed! On his breast as many stars as there are countries in the world. Trumpets and drums sounded as the infantry, in their steel helmets, marched firmly by, and the heavy guns made the windows rattle as they passed. An enchanted world, transformed!

But my time is up, and I must close with a wish for the next eleventh of November. Even if the month brings storms which roar in the chimney and shriek of death and terror, I know that restoration of the body and the soul’s rebirth give strength and beauty. In them we find an inward warmth which baffles the damp and poison. And may you smile then as on the magic eleventh of November in 1918! May the autumn sun burn your cheeks and a gentle breeze cool them, and may we laugh together from happiness at being great-souled and reborn! Happy Name day Generał

October 28, is a Special Names Day Celebration

October 28, is Name Day for people named Thaddeus and thus, General Tadeusz Kosciuszko, a good reason to celebrate for sure. His ideals were lofty and he prized honor and liberty for all.

In Poland, Names Day celebrations are customary. Like a ‘Birthday Party’ in America, one would celebrate with friends and family on the feast day of the Saint one is named after. On October 28, because of his cherished celebrity and honored courage, everyone considers themselves ‘Tad.’ Tadeusz Kosciuszko, that is.

After his exploits in the American Revolution, Kosciuszko returned to Poland to help restore the Polish borders.

After Poland passed the May 3, Constitution in 1791, it was attacked by Russia, Prussia and Austria who wanted to stop these democratic reforms. King Stanislaw Augustus created the Virtuti Militari medal to honor the Polish soldiers, who had fought to defend the first democratic constitution in Europe. But the Poles lost the war, and the Russians demanded that these medals not be worn or displayed.

While the officers who received this honor took the medals off their chests, they sent the blue with black ribbons from these honors to their wives and girlfriends, who used them to tie their hair in ponytails.

On Oct 28, 1792, Prince Czartoryski held a Names Day party (imieniny) at his palace for the name’s day of Tadeusz. General Kosciuszko was celebrated. The women wore white dresses with black and blue sashes and tied their hair in ponytails with the medal ribbons. The women also made a garland crown of leaves from an oak tree planted 100 years earlier by King Sobieski, and placed it on Kosciuszko’s head to honor him.

General Kosciuszko was described by Thomas Jefferson as the “Purest son of Liberty”. When Kosciuszko died he left his money and property in America for the freeing and education of slaves. George Washington commented, “He served America with courage and distinction.”

Because October is Polish Heritage Month in America, remember to be Tad that day. Wear a blue and black ribbon. Remember parents, grand-parents and all those who came before us. Remember the sacrifices of veterans, teachers, mentors and most of all, remember the examples of Kosciuszko. “Happy Names Day- Tadeusz.”
