Reflection for the Fourth Week in Ordinary Time

Freedom is not free…
But we are free because the Lord has delivered us!

“Brothers and sisters: I should like you to be free of anxieties.”

There was a lot of anxiety in 1897. The people of Scranton had scrimped and saved to build a church. The parish they had built, that their generous donations supported, didn’t want them. They had been ejected from their former parish by a cruel pastor who demanded only obedience, who derided the hard working people, threatening them will hellfire. He sought only to be the lord and master of the people.

Think of their anxiety. They were outcasts, without a parish, without a pastor, without a spiritual home. Their investment in a spiritual home was gone and its doors were shut to them. In their anxiety they reached out to God and in doing so found comfort in a pastor, a shepherd who made the grace of God available once again. Not a pastor who demanded to be their lord and master, but a pastor who was their brother, teacher, and guide; a pastor whose heart was for the people.

God sent Ś.P. Bishop Hodur to take their commission. He let them know the one key way to alleviate anxiety. It was not submission to priests, bishops, and a pope who defined themselves as royalty, as lords and masters, but instead knowledge of the one Lord and Savior who frees us.

Bishop Hodur showed them the true Jesus who came to give us His word, to teach us, to show us the way to the Father. He showed them that Jesus was not preparing hellfire for His people, but rather the joys of heaven. He pointed and led to Jesus who takes up every one of our anxieties, big and small, and frees us; Jesus, who promises us joy.

Today we honor our freedom as we exercise our voice and vote in our annual parish meeting. This freedom was hard won, but has given us the best of all churches – one that is fully Catholic and fully democratic.

The people of Scranton took their anxiety to the Lord and He showed them the way, provided for them. Let us too rely on the Lord who has made us free.

Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time – 2012

Brothers and sisters:
I should like you to be free of anxieties.

Anxiety:

Maria was beset by anxiety attacks. They progressed over time, but eventually became so severe she could no longer function, could no longer have a normal life. These attacks were debilitating, she felt constant fear, and her mind wandered through all the possibilities and probabilities that something terrible would happen. Not only would Maria feel anxiety, her anxiety was compounded because she knew something was wrong with her, and she feared that too.

The word anxiety is derived from the Latin word which literally means “to choke.”. Maria felt choked. She couldn’t acknowledge her fears so she could deal with them, she had no help, and she felt she had nowhere for her anxiety to go. Her breath was almost cut off.

Paul on anxiety:

St. Paul is addressing a group of questions posed by the church members, people like you and me, the early parishioners at Corinth saying that he would like them to be free from anxieties. St. Paul addressed the problem of anxiety with the parishioners at Philippi as well. He told them:

Have no anxiety about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.

Paul talked a lot about anxiety because it is real, something present in our lives, but which he knew we could be freed from.

1897:

Today:

Today we stand on the foundation Bishop Hodur and those free men and women built. We are not slaves to lords and masters, to bishops and popes. We stand free with the knowledge and grace given through God’s word. Our priests, deacons, and bishops stand along side us, teaching us, working with us. Because we are free, no one can close our church, shut doors to us, take away our voice and vote, send us to hell, or tell us that God is not for us. God, working through history, has freed us from all those anxieties and has given us the light of His Holy Polish National Catholic Church.

Hezekiah:

In 2nd Kings we read of Hezekiah, the 14th king of Judah. His enemy, the Assyrian king, sent messengers with a letter. This letter is one of those that cause great anxiety. What did Hezekiah do? He went before the Lord and spread the letter out in front of God. Hezekiah did what what the Lord asks all of us to do, what St. Paul strongly encourages: put all anxieties before the Lord. St. Paul tells us that when we do that:

the peace of God which surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

Reassurance:

Anxiety literally means to choke. When we choke our outlet is blocked. Anxiety does that when, like Maria, we see no out, when there is no place for troubles and anxieties to go. How terrible to be trapped, and bound.

But we, we are free. In our democratic Church, a true treasure among all the Churches, we stand with each other and support each other. Most of all, and best of all, we have a Father in heaven who loves us. No matter the anxiety, no matter problem, big or small, we can spread them out before Him. We are able to tell God of our anxieties because He is our outlet and our relief. He is our hope, He frees us.

Our God is the God of everything. We are able to have peace, because as St. Paul says, God will take all our anxiety away. Let us spread out our anxieties before God and trust that the God who gave us freedom and eternal life in Jesus, will free us of all anxiety. Nothing can truly harm or take away what Jesus has won for us. Amen.

Appointment of a reluctant bishop

South Florida priest appointed to New England diocese, just in time for Christmas

The Very Rev. Paul Sobiechowski is a reluctant bishop. He never wanted to leave his warm little parish in Davie, where he has served for nearly three decades.

But the fourth time was the charm when the Polish National Catholic Church asked him to become a leading shepherd. This time he said yes.

Sobiechowski will say his final Mass on Dec. 11 at St. Joseph’s Polish Catholic Church in Davie, the exact 28th anniversary of his first Mass there in 1983. The next day, he and wife Karen will pack and move to Holy Trinity Cathedral in Manchester, N.H.

“I liked being a priest; I never wanted to do anything more,” Sobiechowski, 57, said after a morning liturgy at the church. “But now that I’m called to this, I just hope I can do what I need to accomplish [God’s] will.”

Sobiechowski was actually chosen in October 2010, during the general synod in Toronto. Polish National Catholic practice, though, elects qualified people before they are needed; that way, there’s always a supply. In May, he was assigned to the Eastern Diocese, 20 parishes in New England, on the retirement of Bishop Thomas Gnat.

Sobiechowski’s name had come up three times before, and he had declined. But this time, he says he heard an inner voice: “I want you to stand for election.” He accepted.

The move will end his work not only in his parish but the community. He was a member of the Davie-Cooper City Rotary Club and a board member of the EASE Foundation, which serves the poor in western Broward.

For 20 years, he and Karen coordinated an annual Advent candlelight service for neighborhood churches. The evening included choirs, sacred dancers, instrumentalists and a buffet. Also included was an offering for Sunset School, a center for special needs children.

Sobiechowski also headed the ecumenical chaplaincy at Memorial Pembroke Hospital, and served as state chaplain for the Polish Legion of American Veterans. And Oct. 18 was declared Bishop Paul Sobiechowski Day in Davie.

He shepherded the church and the 35 residents in its retirement home through three hurricanes and a tornado. Wilma dumped four feet of water on the center of the property. The land has lost some 200 trees altogether; Sobiechowski says he once blew out an arm trying to cut up fallen trees with a 20-inch chainsaw.

“Typical priest work,” he says with a smile.

He considers the stresses worth it for the 150 parishioners, who he says show a “cornucopia of nationalities”: Polish, African American, Asian, Caribbean, several kinds of Hispanic. Sobiechowski says the Spanish-language Mass is the best attended.

More than diversity, Sobiechowski has enjoyed the family atmosphere. “If someone gets sick, everyone is on the phones. If someone gets a birthday, everyone sings ‘Happy Birthday.’

“I love being a priest. You’re always with the people. You get to know families. As a bishop, it’s not just you and the community. It’s 20 communities.”

Even the rectory will expand. He and Karen have become accustomed to living in 800 square feet. He says the bishop’s rectory in Manchester is more than four times larger.

He still sees some pluses to his new home. He likes lobster. He’ll be an hour from Boston. New Hampshire has no state income tax. And people are people, in every state.

“God looked at his creation and said it’s good,” Sobiechowski says. “And if the winters are cold [in New Hampshire], the warmth of the people has to be exceptional.”

“Whatever challenges you have, somehow, with God’s help, we always survive,” he says. “We always pray, ‘Thy will be done.'”

Art and thoughts for Labor Day

The history and tradition of the Polish National Catholic Church’s is the life and history of its people and their relationship with their Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. The documents, hymns, and writings of the Church, and its civic action all reference its relationship with Labor. That relationship was founded so that the struggles of its members would not go unheeded, but rather to support them in prevailing in their fight for freedom, recognition, fair treatment and wages as workers, and their dignity as citizens and Christians.

These references include, from the Hymn of the Polish National Catholic Church:

Now again He comes from heaven,
Midst the lab’ring, toiling people,
In the form of Bread and God’s Word,
To His humble, needful people.
To His humble, needful people.

From the Hymn of Faith:

To Thee we come, O Lord our God,
Before Thine altar Father,
Thou knowest best our yearning hearts,
This supplication answer.
Lift up from want thy people, Lord.
Bless us O God, O Father bless our toil.

Under Thy Cross we stand prepared,
To serve Thee with devotion,
Be it with sweat of blood or tears,
Or humble resignation.
For we Thy people are, O Lord,
Save us O God, O Father bless our toil.

The Church, addressing criticism of Bishop Hodur’s support for workers and their efforts. Some saw a necessity for removing religion from the workers movement. From Straz (21 January 1910):

As it was in 1897, so it is today in the year 1910, that Bishop Hodur is a supporter of reform in the civil or the social spirit, he is for the nationalization of the land, of churches, schools, factories, mines and the means of production. He has stated this openly and states it publicly today, he does not hide his sympathies for the workers’ movement and he will never hide them, and he considers himself nothing else than a worker in God’s Church.

But the bishop is an opponent of erasing religion from the cultural work of humanity — indeed, Bishop Hodur believes strongly and is convinced that all progress, growth, just and harmonious shaping of human relations must come from a religious foundation, lean on Divine ethics, and then such growth will be permanent and will give humanity happiness.

Bishop Hodur stood with strikers and those in the Labor movement. He participated in strikes and supported striking workers, and called the PNCC together to respond to the Lattimer Massacre. The following is from a November 30, 1919 speech at a reception for delegate Maciej Łacszczyński, editor of a labor newspaper in Poland and a delegate to the International Conference of Workers held in Washington. The address was attended by members of congress and John T. Dempsey, President of the United Mine Workers Union:

One of the greatest achievements of modern civilization is respect and honor for human labor. ln the past, labor was undervalued, work was shameful, and what goes with that, working people were mistreated and abused. There was kowtowing and bowing before those who did not need to work hard, and those who did work hard and with their toil created wealth and fed others were regarded as half-free or slaves. Even the greatest of the ancient thinkers such as Plato and Aristotle regarded this economic system as just and the only one recommended, in which a minority rules and possesses full rights of citizenship and the majority works and produces. This majority of people had no rights, it was not free. And such a system lasted whole ages.

Truly Jesus Christ came on earth as the greatest teacher of humankind, the spiritual regenerator, and he condemned a social order based on cruelty and injustice, and His immediate disciples tried to create a new order, the Kingdom of God on earth, but the exponents of force and exploitation soon managed to gain for themselves the leaders of the Christian Church and impose on them their points of view. And the entire Middle Ages, that is, for about a thousand years more, this unjust system was tolerated, this order in which two castes, that is, the magnates, nobles and clergy, possessed rights and privileges; townspeople had limited rights, but the great masses of peasants and laborers were without rights, without influence whatsoever. It was not even permitted to change one’s lord. One was tied to the field or to the workplace like some kind of thing without a soul.

Not until the beginning of the nineteenth century were the commandments of Christ the Lord remembered, His teaching about the worthiness and value of labor. But it was not the priests, not the bishops, not the pope – these representatives of the Christian Church – who recalled this splendid teaching of Christ about the value of the human soul and labor, but lay people, first in England, then in France. It began to be taught that work is the foundation of the social structure, that work is the source of wealth, prosperity and happiness, and what goes with this, that it is not the nobility, not the magnates, not those presently ruling who should be the ruling class, but if there is to be a ruling class then it should be the working class.

And from that time, that is, more or less from the middle of the last century, begins the organization of workers on a larger scale in the name of the rights of man, in the name of the value and worthiness of labor. Everything that workers did in the name of their slogans was good.

And today one may say boldly that the cause of labor is the most important one, and that progress, the development and happiness of the whole nation, of all mankind, depends on its just resolution. Workers today have more privileges than they have ever had.

In this reasonable and just struggle for rights, bread for the family and education for children, for common control of the wealth created by the worker, our holy Church stands before the worker like a pillar of fire, and the hand of Christ blesses him in his work.

Upcoming events in Norway – Synod and installation of Bishop Flemestad

A Synod and convocation of the Nordic Catholic Church will be held from Friday, August 5th through Sunday, August 7th.

The Synod will take place at St. John the Baptist Church, Oslo, on Friday, August 5th beginning at 10am. Holy Mass will be held in St. John’s Church beginning at 4:30pm with its principal celebrant the Rt. Rev. Thaddeus Peplowski of the Buffalo-Pittsburgh Diocese of the PNCC. A cultural evening will follow at Lovisenberg Guesthouse beginning at 7pm.

On Saturday, August 6th the day will begin with Lauds in St. John’s Church at 9am. From 10am to 12pm there will be a presentations in the chapel of the Catinka Guldberg Centre. Bishop Peplowski will speak on: “My vision for Norway, then and now.” Bishop Flemestad will present: “Faith and Hope – The Road Ahead.” A children’s program will also be held simultaneous to the presentations. Lunch at Catinka Guldberg Centre will begin at 12pm. At 4:30pm Bishop Roald Nikolai Flemestad will be officially installed as Bishop of the Nordic Catholic Church by Bishop Thaddeus Peplowski during Holy Mass at St. John the Baptist Church. Bishop Flemestad will be the principal celebrant. There will be a reception immediately following at the Lovisenberg Guesthouse.

On Sunday, August 7th Holy Mass will be held at St. John the Baptist Church at 11am. A reception will follow at the Cathinka Guldberg Centre.

Holy Trinity of Kewanee, Illinois raises high the cross

From the Star Courier: Renovation under way at Holy Trinity Church

It was 1928 when the local paper published news that Polish immigrants would build a new church in Kewanee. The church was completed during that year and the first Mass was celebrated as the Christmas Eve Shepherds Mass in 1928.

For over 83 years, the Holy Trinity Church steeple has contributed to Kewanee’s landscape. But like any old building, this one also needs constant maintenance and care. The wooden cross on the top of the steeple, once heavy and strong, had lost its good appearance. The roof and the walls started deteriorating.

A few years ago the heating and cooling system were upgraded. There is now air-conditioning in the church and downstairs in the church hall. With the updated heating system, there was no longer a need for the chimney on the east side of the church building.

The Parish Committee, pastor and all members of the congregation decided to give the church back its beautiful look. The renovation will be expensive and will last all summer, but the final result will be great.

Parish Committee Chairman David Draminski said, “Our plan is to make the church up-to-date and more inviting, but to keep it traditional.” Holy Trinity Parish members understand that it is worth every effort to keep the church in good condition.

Holy Trinity Polish National Catholic Church is a big part of Kewanee history and close to the hearts of many Kewaneeans. Not only members, but many of our friends like to come and taste our delicious Polish food — Polish sausage, pierogies, sauerkraut — at our St. Joseph’s Supper in March, Easter Brunch, The More on 34 Polish food sale, our Fourth of July food stand at Francis Park, and our Polish Sausage Supper in October and the Polish food sale in December.

Congratulations Holy Family Parish

On the opening of your Parish home and your Catholic presence in North Java, New York. The former St. Nicholas Parish church, established in 1891, was closed by the R.C. Diocese of Buffalo in 2008. The Roman Catholic Diocese sold the church, along with its land and buildings, including a school and convent, to the people of Holy Family Parish.

In the PNCC, the faithful of the Church hold title to, and fully own their land, buildings, and parish possessions, democratically managing and controlling them.

From the Arcade Herald: North Java church reopens

Former St. Nicholas Parish in North Java, NY, now Holy Family ParishThe Holy Family Parish National Catholic Church in North Java held a service Saturday, June 11, to officially re-open the doors of the church. Empty for two years, the original church was closed as part of the [Roman] Catholic Diocese’s Journey in Faith and Grace downsizing effort, and was recently purchased by the Holy Polish [National] Catholic Church. Parishioners and clergy gathered at the entrance of the building to begin a service in which the church building was blessed and dedicated.

Bishop Thaddeus Peplowski came from Buffalo to conduct the Dedication Mass. A number of parishioners from Peplowski’s church also attended to worship and celebrate, along with about 40 people that had attended the church in North Java on the two previous Sundays. Before the building was purchased, North Java parishioners were meeting at the fire hall for their Mass.

The church will hold Sunday Mass at 10:00 a.m. each week. As it grows and becomes more organized, the parish committee hopes to expand the number of services. The building itself still requires some repair work, and the committee is making plans to move forward with that to make it more suitable for worship.

After the mass on Saturday, the people met outside behind the church building for a picnic reception.

Update on the Streator dispute

STREATOR — No criminal prosecution is expected in a case involving a monsignor’s allegation that an 86-year-old woman took money that did not belong to her group.

The matter instead is civil, said LaSalle County State’s Attorney Brian Towne. Dorothy Swital of Streator has hired a lawyer and a benefit will be held Sunday to pay her expenses.

Monsignor John Prendergast, head of the now-combined Streator parishes, earlier said Swital transferred two certificates of deposit from the now-defunct St. Casimir Altar and Rosary Society to the new Polish Rosary Society.

The $35,622 belongs to the new St. Michael the Archangel parish and not her group, said Prendergast.

“We have been in consultation with the lawyers involved,” said Towne. “The money is not missing. We know exactly where it is and when you get into that kind of situation, it’s a civil matter.”

Swital said she has had no contact with Prendergast but continues to believe it is the new group’s money. “I’ve gotten a lot of support,” she said. “I would say it’s three to one.

“We gave it (the money) to the church when they needed it,” said Swital. “We’ve done nothing wrong.”

Prendergast and diocesan officials continue to maintain it is church money, citing both canon (church) and civil law.

A chicken and spaghetti meal for Swital’s defense fund will run from noon until 3 p.m. Sunday at Polish National Alliance Hall, 906 Livingston St.

Four Streator Roman Catholic parishes, including St. Casimir, were combined into one parish. A new church building on the north side is planned.

Seems an issue of money over souls; the letter of the law over the spirit of the law. Why is recourse always to the law? Can’t Christians resolve such things among themselves? St. Paul warned us about this — see 1 Corinthians 6:1-7. How will the Monsignor be a judge of the world when he must run to authorities over such a simple matter?

The Monsignor may have his laws books straight, but then, so did the Pharisees. If he were to relent, what harm would come – these ladies would support their church wholeheartedly, with their prayer, hard work, and money. Instead, he will win, and in the process their hearts and faith will be broken. Rather than hallowed victory, he and the Church he is supposed to represent will have hollow victory.

The voice of the LORD cries to the city —
and it is sound wisdom to fear thy name:
“Hear, O tribe and assembly of the city!
Therefore I have begun to smite you,
making you desolate because of your sins.
You shall eat, but not be satisfied,
and there shall be hunger in your inward parts;
you shall put away, but not save,
and what you save I will give to the sword.
You shall sow, but not reap;
you shall tread olives, but not anoint yourselves with oil;
you shall tread grapes, but not drink wine.” — Micah 6:9,13-15

My suggestion, leave the Monsignor his money, let him wallow in it and eat its fruit. Come to your nearest PNCC Parish, or start one in Streator, where your hard work and contribution will always be within your control. As you say: the things you have worked for, for the benefit of the Church. No one will grasp at your purse while you dine at the table of the Lord.

Church closing by vote and without abandonment

From the Cleveland Plain Dealer: Broadway United Methodist Church in Slavic Village to close

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Broadway United Methodist Church, formed as a Sunday school in Cleveland’s Slavic Village neighborhood in 1872, is preparing to celebrate its last Christmas. The 92-year-old church building, which once held hundreds of worshippers at Sunday morning services, now draws an average of 20 people to the old wooden pews.

On Nov. 17, only 17 members gathered in the sanctuary for Sunday worship. After the service, they cast ballots on whether to close the cash-strapped church, which in recent years disbanded its choir, closed its preschool and spent its endowment funds.

The vote was 16-1 to close.

“We sat there and held hands,” said Donna Lorenz, a member since 1980. “Some were crying.”

Member Lea Ann Russell said that other than the sniffling, there was dead silence after the vote was announced.

“I was so worked up,” she said. “But we knew it was coming to this. When you can’t pay the bills, it’s just not right to try to keep it open.”

Church’s closing another blow to Slavic Village

Broadway United, which sits near a huge empty lot that was once St. Alexis Hospital, torn down a few years ago, will hold its last Sunday service on Dec. 26.

The closing is yet another blow to the Slavic Village neighborhood, devastated by the foreclosure crisis and plagued with boarded-up houses.
“We’re at a place in time where change needs to happen,” said the Rev. Yvonne Conner, the church’s pastor. “This is part of a society reshaping itself. It’s part of the cycle. It happens whether we like it or not.”

Broadway United is 3rd Methodist church in area to close this year

Broadway United is the third United Methodist church in central Greater Cleveland to close this year as city neighborhoods and inner-ring suburbs continue to lose populations to outer-ring suburbs and exurbia.

“It’s an indication of what’s facing older, industrial communities,” said Cleveland City Councilman Tony Brancatelli, noting that Slavic Village also lost three Catholic churches in the recent downsizing by the Cleveland Catholic Diocese.

The two other United Methodist churches that closed this year are Masters in Euclid and Brooklyn Memorial on Cleveland’s near West Side.
That leaves the Greater Cleveland area with 62 United Methodist churches, said the Rev. Orlando Chaffee, superintendent of the denomination’s North Coast District, which stretches from Chagrin Falls to Elyria and from Lake Erie to Brunswick.

Church has rare copy of da Vinci’s ‘The Last Supper’

Broadway United, built by Bohemians in 1918 and known as “Old Broadway,” is an imposing Gothic stone structure, featuring priceless stained-glass windows and an actual-size copy of Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper” above the altar.

The 15-by-30-foot painting, unveiled in 1924, was commissioned by the Stafford family, wealthy members of the church.

In 1957, according to church history, restoration artists working on the original 15th century painting in Milan, Italy, came to Old Broadway to study colors and details of the rare copy.

Pastor Conner said that after the church closes, the sanctuary and art will be maintained and preserved for special events such as weddings, funerals and musical concerts.

The church building also includes offices of the United Methodists’ North Coast District, which will remain, as will some of the church’s outreach programs.

“The good news is that they’re not abandoning the neighborhood,” said Brancatelli.

Howard Benes, 83, of Independence, grew up in the neighborhood and drives from his suburban home to Old Broadway every Sunday for the 10:30 a.m. service.

He remembers when the church was full. He remembers the basketball team, the harmonica club, the drama club and the pork, sauerkraut and dumpling church dinners.

“When I was a kid, I was there seven days a week,” he said.

Benes, a retired Cleveland firefighter, said his happy memories of Old Broadway are helping him deal with the sadness of the closing.

“I hate to think of the Christmas service,” he said. “It’ll be the last one, but there’s not much I can do about it. With everything, there is a beginning and, unfortunately, there has to be an end.”

Much like in the PNCC, this closing was done after worship and prayer, and by the vote of the membership. The membership and pastor also took responsibility for how this change was to come about, not as an abandonment of buildings and neighborhoods, but by maintaining a presence — the sanctuary will be maintained and used for special events and outreach programs will continue. Any closing and transition is sad and difficult, but done with the voice and vote of members, and with good planning and commitment to Christian witness, the Church itself lives on.

From Bishop Thaddeus Peplowski of the Buffalo-Pittsburgh Diocese in Acts: New Hope – New Vision – New Growth

This second decade of the Twenty First Century promises a sturdy and sure foundation for the Polish National Catholic Church. We enter in the 114 Anniversary of the organization of the Church and the 104 Anniversary of the Consecration of the First Bishop, Francis Hodur in valid and licit Apostolic Succession. The fact that we have preserved our Holy Orders in an unbroken line with the first Holy Apostles, has ignited the flame of a New Hope and an enlightened vision for the future growth and expansion of the Polish National Catholic Church. Our battle cry for success continues to inspire people in other nations to follow our lead in preserving the concept of National Catholic Churches in which: “By Truth, Work and Struggle, We Shall Succeed!”

I have just returned from a successful missionary visit to both Germany and Italy where there are both former Anglican and Old Catholic Parishes and Communities that are disillusioned over the questionable validity of some doctrines and sacraments that are being practiced in those Churches. They respect the decision that our bishops took in 2003 at the Bishop’s Conference in Prague in breaking official ties with European Old Catholic Churches. There are many clergy and lay members who feel the same way and want to be in union with our church. They are asking that we listen to their pleas and offer some type of accommodations that will allow them to be in Communion with the Polish National Catholic Church. The purpose of the “Union of Scranton” was proposed so that they might find a haven that will continue to maintain the traditional Old Catholic teachings and practices.

In Germany, I was invited to visit a former Old Catholic Monastic Abbey that follows the Cistercian Rule and they are looking for union with an on-going traditional Old Catholic Church. The Polish National Catholic Church is the only Old Catholic Body that fits that criteria, so through the influence of Father Roald Flemested of the Nordic Catholic Church, they were directed to contact me. We met with Abbot Klaus Schlapps at St. Severn’s Abbey in Kaufberuren, Bavaria. This Abbey also serves about 100 members of a Parish Church St. Lucas in the town of Kaufberuren. There are priests, brothers and nuns who make up this Order and serve five other Old Catholic Congregations in Germany. There are also possibilities of accepting other groups in France, Switzerland and five Parishes in Cameroon, Africa. The talks appear to be very positive for establishing relations that could include them in the Union of Scranton.

We traveled nine hours by train from Bavaria through Austria and the Swiss Alps to the famous city of Turin, the permanent home of the Shroud of Turin. Our missionary endeavor was successful there for now have three Parishes in Italy: St. Stanislaus Kostka Parish in Luca with Fr. Claudio Boca as Pastor; Merciful Jesus Parish in Turin with Fr. Giuseppe Biancotti as its Pastor, and Holy Spirit Parish in Sabaudia with Fr. Luciano Bruno as its Pastor. Another Parish is in the process of being organized near Pizza by Father Gastone Bernacchi, whom I ordained on Saturday, January 15th. Two of these Parishes were formerly Old Catholic Congregations under the Bishop of Switzerland. Inquiries are also coming from other former Anglican and Old Catholic Communities who see in the PNCC the traditional catholic teachings and Apostolic Orders that are vital signs of being a part of the true Church of Jesus Christ.

Too often we America National Catholics take our Church for granted and feel that we belong to a small, little known denomination that no one knows or cares about. The Polish National Catholic Church however, is greatly admired by people throughout the world as being a Church of great faith and conviction, and they seek to be one with us because we maintain the traditional signs of a true Church, for we are: One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic in preserving a very orthodox and traditional faith. For these very reasons, we should continue to have Hope and New Vision for the future growth and expansion of the National Catholic Church’s expression of the true faith.

In 2011, let us take the example of our newest mission fields where people are very open and positive about expressing their joy of being a part of the PNCC and because of their new or refound faith, they are not afraid to talk to others about what the Church means in their lives. We need to stop standing along the side lines and criticizing what is happening and get out into the mainstream of life and tell others about the Church. Our words and actions are positive seeds that will cause the PNCC to grow not only in new mission fields, but also blossom and bear fruit right in our own hometown congregations. All it takes is faith, and God will do the rest.
