The great poets?

A great post from John Guzlowski at Everything’s Jake: Can American Poetry Be Great Again?

My friend Elizabeth Oakes, author of The Farmgirl Poems, sent me a New York Times article that she saw posted on the Women’s Poetry List about whether or not American poetry will ever be great again. It’s a good article that raises a number of important questions about poetry and reading and the audience for the written word.

He then points to the NY Times article from its On Poetry column: The Great(ness) Game

The problem is that over the course of the 20th century, greatness has turned out to be an increasingly blurry business. In part, that’s a reflection of the standard narrative of postmodernism, according to which all uppercase ideals —” Truth, Beauty, Justice —” must come in for questioning. But the difficulty with poetic greatness has to do with more than the talking points of the contemporary culture wars. Greatness is —” and indeed, has always been —” a tangle of occasionally incompatible concepts, most of which depend upon placing the burden of —greatness— on different parts of the artistic process…

What does greatness mean? What should it mean? How has poetry evolved within American culture? The article is an interesting exploration of those topics.

The author also takes a shot at the intrigue and exoticism of foreign poets living in the United States, particularly Czesław Miłosz. For all of their “greatness” a lot of their “not-so-great” gets glossed over. Using Miłosz as an example is particularly funny because Miłosz’ “greatness” occasionally exhibited itself in pseudo-class warfare, pitting him, and his ring of Polish intellectuals, against his base of support, the people who were forced to call him great, because he was one of us. 9th International Art Competition, IX Międzynarodowy Konkurs Plastyczny

The Youth Culture House of Rybnik, Poland announces its 9th Annual international Art Competition on the theme “The Great Well-Known and Unknown.”

This year’s topic focuses on “Velázquez – The King’s painter and the Painters’ Prince”

The annual competition’s aims are:

  • To present the creativity of children and teenagers;
  • To popularize art history and to familiarize participants with the great artists;
  • To share artistic and methodological experiences;
  • To develop children’s sensitivity to art.

Our journey has lasted for 9 years. Many of you have accompanied us from the beginning. Leaving Paris of the first half of XXth century behind, we move to VIIIth century Spain with presentations on Diego Velázquez, his life and creative output.

In his works, the great painter showed the wonderful, baroque, Spanish court, a society in an age full of contrast, the mysticism of religious ecstasy, the pathos of history, and the beauty of nature. This genius of art and intellect was an unequalled master of colour and the painter’s vision of reality. Loftiness alternates invariably with simplicity in his poetical paintings.

We expect that you present the places and historical epoch in which he worked, people whom he encountered and by whom he was befriended, his models, studios, teachers, patrons —“ everything he lived during his 61 years, passing from his modest beginning as a painter in Sevilla to his becoming an outstanding nobleman of Spanish court, and king’s painter.

Please do not copy the artist’s works. Rather, let them be an inspiration for your own works.

Participants aged 5 to 21 may enter in the following groupings:

  1. Up to age 7,
  2. Ages 8 —“ 11,
  3. Ages 12 —“ 15 and,
  4. Ages 16 —“ 21

Works may range from a minimum of 30 x 42 cm to a maximum of 70 x 100 cm

Works may be paintings, drawings, graphics, or mixed.

The deadline for entry is March 31st, 2009.

All works should be clearly signed on the back and should contain the following information:

  • Author’s full name and age
  • Institution’s address, telephone and E-mail address
  • Teacher’s full name
  • The title of the work

Please do not frame works!

An awards ceremony and exhibition will take place on May 25th, 2009 in Rybnik, Poland.

The organisers will inform all the authors of awarded works by E-mail or telephone.

Year of Grotowski in New York

The Polish Cultural Institute and the Performance Studies Department of the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University are presenting Tracing Grotowski’s Path: Year of Grotowski in New York starting February 6 and continuing through July 13, 2009. The program is curated by Professor Richard Schechner.

Tracing Grotowski’s Path: Year of Grotowski in New York celebrates the work and legacy of world-renowned Polish theatre director Jerzy Grotowski.

Jerzy GrotowskiConsidered one of the most important and influential theatre practitioners of the 20th century, Grotowski revolutionized contemporary theatre in a number of ways. Beginning in 1959 with his early experiments and productions in the Polish town of Opole and subsequently with the Polish Laboratory Theatre in Wrocław, Grotowski changed the way Western theatre practitioners and performance theorists conceive of the audience/actor relationship, theatre staging, and the craft of acting. UNESCO has designated 2009 as —The Year of Grotowski— —“ 50 years after the founding of the Polish Laboratory Theatre and 10 after the death of the world-renowned Polish theatre director,

The opening program: The Theatre of Thirteen Rows (1959) and the Frotowski Institute in Wrocław (2009) will take place on Friday, February 6, 2009, 7:30pm at the Cantor Film Center, 36 East 8th Street, New York, NY

This event brings together former literary director and co-founder of the Theatre of Thirteen Rows (later the Polish Laboratory Theatre), Ludwik Flaszen and the current directing team of the Grotowski Institute in Wrocław, Poland: Jarosław Fret and Grzegorz Ziolkowski. What brought the Polish Laboratory Theatre into existence? What was the Polish theatre scene like in those days of the Cold War and the Iron Curtain? What is the current work of the Grotowski Institute? How is the Institute preserving, researching, and using Grotowski’s archives and his Polish heritage? The panel discussion, moderated by Richard Schechner, will be preceded by a screening of a film on Jerzy Grotowski. The event will conclude at 11:00 PM.

Breathing Is Free 12,756.3 at the ASU Art Museum

The Arizona State University Art Museum presents the U.S. Premier of Breathing Is Free 12,756.3: a new work by Jun Nguyen-Hatsushiba, January 24 —“ April 26, 2009. Reception: February 20: 7-9 p.m.

Japanese-American-Vietnamese artist, Jun Nguyen-Hatsushiba, is well known on the international art circuit for his striking video installations. This exhibition presents new work, and examines his abiding interest in globalization and the balance between tradition and change as we forge our future. Co-organized with the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, each venue will host the on-going piece, Breathing is Free, in which the artist is running the diameter of the earth (12,756.3) in cities of the world at different times. Breathing is Free is a virtual earth drawing, exhibited as an installation, illustrating the movement of populations around the world. The ASU Art Museum exhibition is the U.S. premiere of the Breathing is Free performance and installation.

Jun will be arriving in Phoenix the week of January 19 to install the exhibition and scout locations for the run, which will take place Spring 2009. The artist’s physical runs, when mapped out, create a pattern that fits with his feeling and thinking about the physical location. The run is therefore very strategically planned and requires much forethought. The exhibition inside the Museum will include footage of both his films and previous runs as well as photography, maps and other projects.

Happy New Year, and my project for 2009: Poetry

First, I would like to wish you, my readers, a very happy New year. May 2009 be a time of continual growth and enlightenment in our journey to the heavenly Kingdom.

Thank you for following my 2008 project, selections from the writings of the Church Fathers. The Fathers project was my third project. Previous projects included the PNCC Calendar of Saints and selections from the Śpiewniczek Kościelny in 2007 and prayers from Żywoty Świętych – a Polish language lives of the saints in 2006.

Our organizer and first Prime Bishop, Franciszek Hodur, was a strong advocate of education, the printed word, literature, and poetry. He saw these as the fruits of man’s cooperation with God, and the means by which members of the Church could lift themselves up; the path to manifesting their dignity and acquiring economic, social, and cultural standing in their new country. My plan for 2009 is to present a year of poetry in recognition of Bishop Hodur’s emphasis on education, human dignity, freedom, and our ultimate call to union with God.

In The Origin and Growth of the Polish National Catholic Church, the Rev. Stephen Włodarski, Ph.D. writes:

Bishop Francis Hodur was a great advocate of the printed word. He stimulated interest and engendered a desire in his followers to acquire learning. He organized special teaching courses and made available suitable reading material for them. He published the weekly “Straż” (Guard), and later, in 1923, published the weekly “Rola Boża” (God’s Field). Other periodicals published by him were “Nowy Świat” (New World), “Trybuna” (Tribune), “Dziś i Jutro” (Today and Tomorrow), “Wiara i Zycie” (Faith and Life) and the quarterly “Polka” (Polish Woman). In addition to these, Bishop Leon Grochowski published in Chicago, the weekly “Przebudzenie” (The Awakening). A literary book store was opened at St. Stanislaus Parish, in Scranton, where classical literature and various brochures were made available. To encourage reading, cultural evening classes were regularly conducted. Bishop Hodur and other priests lectured on famous writers and scholars, and particularly those of Polish origin. Whenever a famous Pole arrived in the United States, such as Ignacy Paderewski, Henryk Sienkiewicz, Tomasz [Zygmunt] MiłkowskiPseudonym: Teodor Tomasz Jeż (1824-1915), Writer, publicist, and politician. Involved in a clandestine democratic group as a student at the University of Kiev, he went to Hungary and joined its revolutionary anti-Austrian Army during the uprising of 1848-1849. After the fall of the insurrection, he moved to Turkey, joined the Polish Democratic Society (Towarzystwo Demokratyczne Polskie [TDP]), and became its agent in the Balkans. During the January Insurrection of 1863, he organized a small Polish unit there, but he did not manage to join insurrection forces fighting in Poland. In 1887 he co-founded and became the first President of the Polish League (Liga Polska). However, later be did not support its successor, the National Democratic Party (Stronnictwo Narodowo-Demokratyczne [SND]). He authored about eighty works, mostly novels on the history of Poland and the struggle of the Southern Slavs against the Turks. — J. Kozicki 1996, Greenwood Publishing Group., Wacław Sieroszewski, and others, they were invited to Scranton where they addressed the assembled and were entertained with poetry recitations and song.

Juliusz SłowackiBishop Hodur greatly admired the poets Juliusz Słowacki (1809 – 1849) and Maria Konopnicka (1842 – 1910).

Konopnicka was Poland’s most inspirational woman poet of the day. In 1906 Bishop Hodur founded a women’s patriotic, cultuiral, and literary society within the Church in her honor – The Maria Konopnicka Societies of the Polish National Catholic Church.

Maria KonopnickaMaria Konopnicka was a prolific poet, novelist, translator and essayist. Her works were noted for their realism, freshness, and spontaneity. In her writings she touched upon the social issues of her time, and exerted a great influence on the next generation of Polish poets and novelists. Konopnicka expressed ideals of democracy and patriotism in her cycle of folk songs and in a poem about peasant emigrants, Pan Balcer w Brazylji (Mr Balcer in Brazil). She also wrote novels for children.

Bishop Hodur was in Poland at the time of Maria Konopnicka’s death, and when the Roman Church refused to bury her, he stepped forward and offered to do so. The Roman Church quickly recanted following Bishop Hodur’s offer. At a celebration in honor of Maria Konopnicka, held in 1920, Bishop Hodur said of her:

She earned merit, above all, in that she spoke to the educated and wealthy strata of the nation, to all working for the enlightenment of the people, to all the disinherited, in the conviction that we are all part of the nation that sooner or later will gain their due rights.

The greatest service Maria Konopnicka performed, however, was in awakening in the soul of the Polish woman love for her responsibilities to the nation, to the family, and yearning for all that is noble, beautiful and good.

Maria Konopnicka tried to point out that the time has passed when a woman tended the home hearth knowing nothing about the world. But new times have come when a woman must be a fellow worker with her husband. She must know the hard responsibilities tied to this life, and share with her husband fate good and bad, to stand by his side, trust him, and uplift his spirit.

The author, Alan Lockwood, is invited to tour Poland and attend the concerts and recitals of the Warsaw Autumn Festival. He comments on interpersonal and cultural understanding, complexity, and history over the course of his tour. The article is lengthy, and well worth the time.
