Ś+P Abbot Dom Klaus Schlapps OPR

śp. Abbot Dom Klaus Dieter Schlapps OPR of the Abbey of St. Severin in Kaufbeuren, Germany, which is part of the Christ-Catholic Church in Germany under the auspices of the Nordic Catholic Church, entered into his eternal rest on Sunday, January 20, 2013. śp. Dom Klaus was also the Abbot General of the Order of Port Royal, an Ecumenical Cistercian Congregation of secular professed monks, nuns, and oblates.

śp. Dom Klaus’ passing was sudden and unexpected. He passed in the midst of his brothers in the Abbey. Our thoughts and prayers are with the brothers as well as his family, friends, and all in community of the Order of Port Royal.

Brother Johannes, speaking on behalf of the Abbey of St. Severin recalled śp. Dom Klaus as a candle burning at both ends. “He spread twice as much light, but his life was thus shorter. Dom Klaus helped so many people. He had a deep abiding faith and trust in God. Whenever problems arose he encouraged his brothers, saying: ‘Faith in God, trust in God, it opens up a path, there is a solution.’ God used him as an instrument of his love.”

Week of Prayer for Christian Unity

Rt. Rev. Bernard Nowicki, Bishop Ordinary of the Central Diocese of the PNCC will join with other Christian leaders in celebrating the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity which is celebrated each year from January 18 to 25. Faith leaders will gather on Thursday, January 24th at 12:10pm for an Ecumenical Celebration of God’s Word at St. Peter’s R.C. Cathedral, Wyoming Ave., Scranton, Pennsylvania. The event will also be televised locally on CTV and will be available online at the Roman Catholic Diocesan website. Bishop Nowicki will be the homilist.

The theme for the 2013 Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is “What does God require of us?” The theme comes from the book of the prophet, Micah 6:6-8.

This observance, first organized in 1908 at Graymoor in Garrison, New York, seeks to gather together diverse communities of the Christian faith to express the degree of communion which the churches have already have, and to pray together for greater unity in the one Church of Jesus Christ.

Movie Night at the Albany PCC

A movie night will be held at the Albany Polish Community Center on Friday, January 18th at 7:30 pm featuring Chopin: Desire for Love.

The movie night is sponsored by the Center’s Ladies’ Auxiliary. The Polish Community Center is located at 225 Washington Ave. Ext. Albany, NY 12205

The drama chronicles the stormy affair between the great piano virtuoso Frederic Chopin and the flamboyant feminist writer Aurore Dupin, who called herself George Sand. Academy Award nominated Jerzy Antczak directs this sweeping portrayal of the famed composer and his intense but hurtful relationship with George Sand and her children. Chopin’s music, known and loved by millions worldwide, provides a powerful score that underlines the drama. The world recognized Yo-Yo Ma (cellist), Emmanuel Ax (pianist), Yukio Yokoyama (pianist), Janusz Olejniczak (pianist), Pamela Frank (violin), and Vadim Brodsky (violin) use their talents to brilliantly perform Chopin’s music.

Pizza and soda will be served. Donations of $2 for Ladies’ Auxiliary and PCC members, $5 for non-members. Children free!

A meeting of the Ladies’ Auxiliary will precede the event starting at 7 pm.

Found in Translation Award:

The Polish Book Institute, the Polish Cultural Institute in New York, and the Polish Cultural Institute in London announced that the winner of the Found in Translation Award for 2011 is Joanna Trzeciak for her translation of Tadeusz Różewicz’s “Sobbing Superpower”, published by W. W. Norton & Company (USA). This award is in recognition of exceptional translation quality, and the great importance of the text awarded. The volume, counting over 300 pages, is a selection of Różewicz’s poems covering all the periods of his work.

Poland’s top literary award

Marek Bieńczyk was awarded the Nike Award, Poland’s most prestigious literary prize for “Książka twarzy,” which translates as ‘A Book of the Face’, the work is described by the author as ‘my Facebook’.

The book is a collection of essays which blend elements of various genres, including poetry, press articles and criticism, and merge intellectual discourse with autobiographical reflections on a wide range of subject matter, from literature and films to tennis and wine. Nike jury chairman Tadeusz Nyczek described the book as ‘Bieńczyk’s grand self-portrait’.

Mr. Bieńczyk is a graduate in French studies at the University of Warsaw. In addition to pursuing a teaching career at the Institute of Literary Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences, he is a prolific writer and translator from the French. He also wrote the novels Terminal and Tworki (the latter translated into English by Benjamin Paloff) and several collections of essays and literary criticism.

Polish Social: A new Polish Webzine

Polish Social, a new webzine, is the brainchild of two Chicago women with a commitment to community, a pulse on Chicago’s art & culture scenes, and a belief in the power of networking and organizing. It provides links to events, job opportunities, innovators in disparate fields; and provides news of interest to a new generation of Polish Chicagoans.

Being Polish in Chicago is sort of a tale of two cities – in one (the collection of Polish communities that dot this city), there is a strong culturally Polish identity, in the other (the city of Chicago as a whole), there is an opportunity for Poles from all fields to step into leadership positions and showcase the Polish community as a vibrant and essential part of this city’s fabric.

New calendar features Polish Catholic churches of Detroit and Hamtramck

From the Macomb Daily Tribune: New calendar highlights Polish Catholic churches

Certified public accountant Thomas Sosnowski grew up in a heavily populated Polish neighborhood on Detroit’s east side.

As a youngster he remembers going to Mass on Sunday at St. Hyacinth Roman Catholic Church on McDougall Street in Detroit and often riding with his parents in subsequent weeks to the west side to visit some of the other gorgeous churches in predominately Polish neighborhoods.

Sosnowski has published a colorful calendar full of pictures of these beautiful churches along with pertinent information concerning their history. Like thousands of other people, he has fond memories of attending Mass at the churches that were decorated to the hilt, especially during the Christmas and Easter seasons.

He said he hired a couple of photographers to take photographs of the stunning churches because he is proud of his Polish heritage and Roman Catholic religion.

“Catholics who were raised in these predominately Polish neighborhoods appreciate the beauty of these phenomenal churches,” Sosnowski said. “I’m sure people who grew up in Detroit and moved to areas like Macomb County experienced the same feeling I did in going to Mass on Sundays and holy days and now would like their children to see how beautiful these places of worship were back then – even if it is just a photograph.”

Sosnowski said unfortunately some of the churches were sold and a few have been demolished. But he said many of the older Poles belong to parishes outside of Detroit but still go to Mass occasionally at some of the older churches.

“I did the calendar as a labor of love for the Polish community,” Sosnowski said. “These churches were jewels back in the day and the inside of these churches were as gorgeous as the outside.”

The days of the week and months of the year in the calendar are written in both English and Polish. Sosnowski has included images of the oldest 35 churches that were predominately Polish, including Holy Cross Polish National Catholic Church and Immaculate Conception Ukrainian Catholic Church in Hamtramck .

The colorful pictures of the churches are listed in chronological order according to the year they were founded.

Churches listed are Our Lady Queen of Heaven, St. Ladislaus, Transfiguration, St. Florian, Our Lady Queen of Apostles, St. Thomas, Immaculate Conception (Poletown), Resurrection, St. Stanislaus Kostka, St. Louis the King, Ascension (Warren), St. Hyacinth, St. Bartholomew, Immaculate Conception, Our Lady Help of Christians and St. Lawrence.

Also, Corpus Christi, Shrine Parish of St. Joseph (Pontiac), St. Albertus, St. Casimir, Sweetest Heart of Mary, St. Josaphat, St. Francis of Assisi, St. Stanislaus B & M, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, St. John Cantius, St. Hedwig, SS. Peter and Paul, St. Barbara, St. Helena, St. Cunegunda, St. John the Baptist, Sweetest Heart of Mary, Our Lady Queen of Angels, St. Andrew, Holy Cross Polish National Catholic Church, Our Lady Queen of Angels, Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Andrew.

The Evolution of Independent American Catholicism in the PNCC

The Rev. Mark Niznik of St. Paul Catholic Church in Belleview will speak at a Tri-County Interfaith Alliance event at 7 p.m. January 8th on “The Evolution of Independent American Catholicism in the Polish National Catholic Church of America — Its Origins, Faith Tenets, and Aims.”

The meeting will be hosted by the Unitarian/Universalist Fellowship of Marion County, 7280 SE 135th St., Summerfield. The program is free and open to the public. A question-and-answer session will follow the program and refreshments will be served. For details please call: 352-674-9288.

Christmas Concert at St. Valentine’s, Northampton, MA

A Christmas Concert will be held at St. Valentine’s PNC Parish, 127 King St., Northampton, MA on December 6th at 7:30 pm, 2012. Mezzo-Soprano, Lisa Woods and Jerry Noble will present this benefit concert. Lisa will sing everything from “O Holy Night” and “The Little Drummer Boy” to “Silver Bells” and “Have a Holly Jolly Christmas! All are welcome. The program of songs will fill your heart with the spirit of Christmas and we hope you will join us for this very special evening. Suggested donation is $10.

Potential issue for parish treasurers

At a training session for church treasurers, an accountant discussed recent instances where an IRS auditor has disallowed a charitable deduction to a church. In each case both the church and the donation were legitimate and documentation was ample. The churches had mailed the required annual statement of cash donations received from the giver. These auditors are disallowing the entire year’s donations because the annual statement of donations did not contain the required boilerplate language, “No goods have been received in exchange for this donation.”

Parish treasurers should be aware of this potential issue and insert the required language in their donation statements as appropriate.

Regulations and law:

Under U.S. Tax Code Sec. 170, a taxpayer is allowed a charitable contribution deduction for a contribution or gift to or for the use of an organization organized and operated exclusively for charitable or educational purposes. Under Code Sec. 170(f)(8)(A), no charitable contribution deduction for any contribution of $250 or more is allowed unless the taxpayer substantiates the contribution with a contemporaneous written acknowledgment of the contribution by the donee organization that meets certain specified requirements. Under Code Sec. 170(f)(8)(B), the donee organization must state in the acknowledgment whether the donee organization provided any goods or services in consideration, in whole or part, for the contributed property or cash. If so, the acknowledgment generally must include a description and good faith estimate of the value of any goods or services provided. (Reg. § 1.170A-13(f)(2)) Under Code Sec. 170(f)(8)(C), a written acknowledgment is contemporaneous if it’s obtained by the taxpayer on or before the earlier of: (1) the date the taxpayer files the original return for the tax year of the contribution; or (2) the due date (including extensions) for filing the original return for the year. (Reg. § 1.170A-13(f)(3))

Events at the Albany’s Polish Community Center

Craft Fair

Get a head start on your Christmas shopping as the Ladies’ Auxiliary of the Polish Community Center presents its Craft Show on Saturday, November 10th from 10am to 3pm. Andrzejki Dance/bal Andrzejkowy

Andrzejki is the last party before Advent and a chance to have fun before the start of the Christmas season. The Polish Community Center will present its annual Andrzejki Dance on Saturday, November 24th from 7pm till 2am. The Dance features the band SYGNAL (Polish contemporary music – this is not a Polka band). Tickets are $30 per person and include the dinner buffet, snacks at midnight, and desserts. Radio City Christmas Spectacular

The Ladies’ Auxiliary of the Polish Community Center is sponsoring a trip to the Radio city Christmas Spectacular in New York City. The trip will take place on Saturday, November 17th leaving at 6:30 am from the Polish Community Center at 225 Washington Avenue Ext., Albany, NY. The show begins at 10:00 am at the Radio City Music Hall in New York City. Participant will have free time for some Christmas shopping and site seeing. Buses will leave to return at 6:30 pm with an approximate arrival back at the Center at 9:00 pm.

Tickets are $105 for PCC members, $65 for children, and $140 for non-PCC members. Price includes an orchestra section ticket and the chartered bus trip. To sign-up, please contact Susan Matala.

The Ladies’ Auxiliary of the Polish Community Center has tickets available for Sląsk – the internationally known Song & Dance Ensemble of Poland. Sląsk is conducting a tour of cities across the United States and Canada and will be appearing at Proctor’s Theater, 432 State Street, Schenectady, NY on Sunday, March 24, 2013 at 4pm.
