Polish Day at the Shrine

From the Albany Polish American Community Center maillist: Polish Day, Sunday August 24, 2008 at the National Shrine of the North American Martyrs, Auriesville, N.Y.

Religious Services beginning at 2pm including Stations of the Cross, Recitation of the Rosary, Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament, Confessions in Polish and English. Concelebrated Mass in Coliseum at 4pm

Principal celebrant and homilest will be the Most Rev. Francis R. Reiss, D.D., Auxiliary Bishop of Detroit, Michigan

This event is sponsored by: Polish American Congress, Central Division of New York State.

I have attended in the past. It is a beautiful event and Polish National Catholics should not refrain from attending. Simply remember your obligations when receiving the Blessed Sacrament (fasting for two hours prior to receiving, make every attempt to receive from a clergy member, and receive on the tongue — not in the hand).

FSU offers online course in Hispanic Marketing Communication

From a friend, Dr. Felipe Korzenny, Professor and Director of the Center for Hispanic Marketing Communication at Florida State University

After three successful semesters, the online course in Hispanic Marketing Communication will be offered again this fall by the Florida State University Center for Hispanic Marketing Communication. The Center, headed by Dr. Felipe Korzenny, is pioneering education in Hispanic Marketing online to reach a national audience.

The online course is available to anyone interested and is particularly recommended for professionals currently addressing the Hispanic market, or those who would like to start a Hispanic marketing initiative. The online course is also available to Florida State University students not currently residing on the Tallahassee campus.

Cathy Colmenares, a former student states: “The Hispanic Market is constantly evolving so I took the Hispanic Marketing course at FSU to gain a deeper knowledge of trends, research, and resources. The course provides valuable case studies, research studies and insights from industry experts. The instructor not only facilitated interactive discussion throughout the online course, but also integrated offline discussion among students. As a result, I made numerous contacts that have proved beneficial in my role as Sr. Director of Integrated Marketing at Todobebe Inc.

The Fall session has a duration of fifteen weeks (classes begin August 25 and end December 5) and includes topics such as cultural identity and its impact on consumer behavior, language use, Hispanic cultural insights for marketing, and case studies relating to Hispanic marketing. The course will also address research and marketing strategies.

A certificate of completion will be issued to all non-degree seeking students who satisfactorily complete the course, and eligible students can receive three hours of undergraduate/continuing education credit.

For application information contact Danielle Kress. Ms. Kress may also be reached by telephone at 850-645-5639.

Dissent: Voices of Conscience

From Albany Catholic: Col. (ret.) Ann Wright, author of Dissent: Voices of Conscience

Tuesday, August 12, 7:00 – 9:00 pm
Albany Public Library
161 Washington Avenue, Albany

Ann Wright will speak at the Albany Public Library while she is in the Capital Region for the Kateri Tekakwitha Peace Conference. Ann Wright’s new book, Dissent: Voices of Conscience, profiles of those in government and active-duty military who have spoken out, leaked documents, resigned, or refused to deploy to protest the war in Iraq. The American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression named Dissent their book of the month for February 2008.

Daniel Ellsberg wrote the foreword. “This … illuminating and remarkably impressive … book should be leaked into the government. … This book could awaken … officials to withdraw their complicity and … tell the truth to [the public]. This country will not escape further human, legal, and moral catastrophes, or preserve itself as a democratic, constitutional republic, if that does not happen. If you’re at all like me, you will have a whole set of new heroes when you finish reading this. …Dissent: Voices of Conscience could change your life.

Which in my opinion is the correct course. Those who protest should not do so by running away but by standing up. Of course you have to be prepared to suffer the consequences of standing up. Not something unfamiliar to those who understand the Christian way of life.

Understanding and Writing Icons: A Student Exhibition

Pictured is Phillip Schwartz' Madonna of Korson. The main purpose of icon-writing is, according to artist Christine Simoneau-Hales, drawing closer to God through the process of prayer—”and painting God’s word in visual form. This exhibit at RPI’s Chapel + Cultural Center features works by both Simoneau-Hales and her students. They created—”—wrote——”iconic paintings in the ancient style, using egg tempera, and real gold leaf to adorn the halos. Students may have begun with the same tracings, but differences in the final works range from folds in the robes to facial expressions as each student expresses a unique message—”not to mention the many hidden meanings and symbols in these color-specific paintings.

In the Gallery at the Chapel + Cultural Center at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, 125 Burdett Avenue, Troy, NY 12180. The exhibit runs from 1 July —“ 1 August. For more information call 518-274-7793.

Polish fest in Mosinee, WI

From the Wausau Daily Herald: Polish fest celebrates ethnicity, togetherness

MOSINEE — The Rev. Marion Talaga is proud that his church celebrates central Wisconsin’s Polish heritage — but that doesn’t mean the festival in its honor is by any means exclusive.

“We want everyone to come,” he said, casting aside preferences of nationality, religion and background in general. “I’m just enjoying these people.”

The 33rd annual Polish Fest, put on by Our Savior National Catholic Church in Mosinee, will be held Saturday and Sunday. Organizers are again promising traditional Polish food, live music and activities.

Traditional Polish food will include the pierogi — a large dumpling filled with various combinations of potatoes, cheese, meat or sauerkraut. But it’s not exclusive, Talaga said, with hamburgers and other popular items available.

Polka bands will provide the music, performing polka, country and other varieties of music. There also will be a polka dancing contest, and on Sunday the church’s popular polka Mass.

And kids can enjoy a variety of games, in addition to all the traditional fun.

The result is a well-rounded community event, Talaga said.

Talaga also emphasized the event’s affordability, with free admission and organizers keeping the price of food and games down.

That, he hopes, will encourage everyone to become a part of the tradition.

“We try to make sure that we do keep our tradition alive,” he said.

Rally in Support of Coptic Christians in Egypt

From ChristianNewsWire:

American Egyptian Coptic Christians to organize a peaceful demonstration, on July 16, 2008, in front of the White House, to protest violent attacks against Coptic Christians in Egypt.

Coptic CrossCoptic Organizations in America along with activists from Egypt, the Middle East, Europe and the United states, will conduct a peaceful demonstration in front of the White House on Wednesday July 16, 2008, from 12:00 noon to 4:00 pm. The purpose is to convey, to world’s opinion and international human rights organizations, recent incidents of persecution, discrimination and marginalization inflicted on Coptic Christians of Egypt by the Egyptian government and Muslim extremists.

The Copts of Egypt are the largest Christian minority in the Middle East. They number about 15% of Egypt’s population of 80 million. Not a month passes by without their churches, homes and businesses being attacked. According to a study made by Ibn Khaldoun Research Center in Cairo, over 240 major attacks against the Copts took place during the period from 1972- 2003. Magdy Khalil, a writer and researcher, estimates that as a result of these attacks more than 4000 Copts were killed or injured. This, in addition to damages to Coptic properties that could exceed hundreds of millions of dollars, during the last three decades alone. Hundreds of Coptic girls are abducted and forced to embrace Islam while security forces act as accomplices and helpers of the criminals.

During the last few weeks, the extremists attacked a jewelry store owned by Copts killing four Copts. The extremists also attacked Abu Fana Coptic monastery injuring many monks and kidnapping three. The abducted monks were tortured, while they were ordered to announce abandoning their Christian faith and embracing Islam. In Fayoum, Muslim extremists attacked homes and businesses owned by Coptic Christians. A Coptic Christian man was killed by Muslims in the town of Dafash, governorate of Minia, in the southern part of Egypt.

We call on the American and International Media, human rights organizations and all freedom loving people to join our demonstration in an effort to send a message to the Egyptian government to stop persecuting the Copts and take responsibility in providing adequate protection for them.
