What happens when…

Mario’s children were cruel to Maciek’s children. They used to steal their property, and after leaving Maciek’s children penniless and broken, they would throw papers at them, condemning them to death.

Mario’s children thought they were very powerful of course. Mario’s far off uncle was a king you see. He had lands and money. He wrote tomes of laws and made grand declarations, requiring that people believe things no one had ever believed. Mario’s children liked that. They believed in their great uncle’s power, in his laws, and truly loved his declarations, especially when he made those declarations from his special chair.

Eventually Maciek’s children found a way to protect their property. They rejected the declarations of the far away uncle. He had no say over them. They had their own uncles. Even so, Mario’s children would still take occasion to beat Maciek’s children, call them cruel names, and spit at their houses. Those were bad times.

Many years passed and, eventually, Mario and Maciek realized that they had a greater responsibility. They had to meet, to talk, to work things out.

Maciek and Mario met, and began to discuss all they have in common. Things went swimmingly for a while. They talked, and found much to agree on. Each seemed to like the other. Each took a risk or two to accommodate the other. Marciek made dinner for Mario and Mario made dinner for Maciek. They ate from the same table. Maciek and Mario even wrote letters — telling all their children, relatives, and friends about their advances in trust and harmony. Mario even started to step-in when some of his unruly children beat-up on Maciek’s children. They seemed to like one another — this is going somewhere.

Maciek was wary, but happy and positive. He wanted to explore more areas of agreement and commonality. He thought — maybe — brotherhood and accord are not unreachable. Mario is trustworthy and open. He’s keeping his naughty children in line. Maybe we can go forward building trust upon trust. One day Maciek said, ‘Mario, let’s go further down this road. Let’s explore more of the things that bind us as brothers. Let’s make life better for our children.’

Mario suddenly stopped. He forgot the things he shared with Maciek. Mario sat there incredulous and said — ‘Look, I no longer wish to explore the things we share, or might share. Rather, I want to focus on me. I want to talk about Mario, and only about Mario. Let’s start.’

Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time

When one finds a worthy wife,
her value is far beyond pearls.

Who is this worthy wife? It is none other than our Holy Polish National Catholic Church. In instituting the Holy Church our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ joined Himself to a spouse whose value is beyond pearls.

Her husband, entrusting his heart to her,
has an unfailing prize.

Jesus entrusted us with His heart and receives in return our unfailing acts of adoration and praise. Far more than that, you and I, as members of His Holy Church, set to work in proclaiming His kingdom, in bringing souls to salvation, in ministering to the strong and the weak, because all are in need.

She reaches out her hands to the poor,
and extends her arms to the needy.

Jesus Christ provides us with a vivid description of faithful servants in His parable of the talents. In our imaginations we picture those servants as men. After-all, in that day and age a master would have entrusted his male servants with talents and would have expected a return on his investment. Yet today, the Holy Church asks us to look beyond the story, men working for another man, to the bride of Christ, our Holy Church, working in unison with her spouse, her Master, Jesus Christ.

Your wife shall be like a fruitful vine
in the recesses of your home;
Your children like olive plants
around your table.

What a beautiful picture, what a wonderfully blessed relationship. Our Holy Church sits in the recesses of the Lord’s house. Her children, you and I, surround the Lord’s table. As olive plants grow and produce abundant fruit, so we grow and produce abundant fruit. The fruit we produce is the blessings that come from our relationship with our Lord. It is this very relationship that is open and encompassing to all who enter these doors.

The fruit we produce is based on the gifts, the talents, we have been given. Each of us has been given a share of gifts: oration, handicraft, healing, song, contemplation, a listening ear, a gentle hand. Those gifts become all-in-all in unison with each other and with our Lord. Unison comes from the Holy Church, the storehouse of graces, where the Holy Spirit dwells. The Spirit gives its gifts individually and draws them back together in community — in life lived together. Not a life where people live side-by-side, but a life where all are one body.

Brothers and sisters,

Our unity, our community perfected in the Holy Polish National Catholic Church, is a community in longing. We long for those who are lost and distant, who do not know the love of the Lord. We long for the weak and the hurting, those in need of the Spirit’s touch and healing.

the day of the Lord will come
like a thief at night.
like labor pains upon a pregnant woman

We are pregnant, awaiting, and ready to bring forth new life. This new life is the Gospel. This new life is life in Jesus Christ, by our regeneration we are re-created, new men, new women, people of skill and determination, people prepared and standing with open arms — arms open to all, with love and concern.

My friends,

Our Holy Polish National Catholic Church is the bride of Christ. It is the good, faithful, and devoted wife. It is the good wife who prepares a home, a lodging place, for all men and women.

We are not the spouse of grand public pronouncements on matters of politics. We are not fasters who do not wash their faces, or charity givers ringing a bell before them as they give (Matthew 6:2,16). We do not legislate the Lord and His gifts. We do not tell one man that he may receive the Lord while another may not. We are not a stumbling block on the road to heaven, throwing up man made doctrines, laws, offices, and absolutes, because we know our Spouse. His grace is overflowing, His offering of talents is for all.

The Spouse and the bride call to all. Come through these doors, for there is love. Our hearts have been changed, and yours will be as well. For the Lord has promised (Ezekiel 11:19-20):

I will give them one heart, and put a new spirit within them; I will take the stony heart out of their flesh and give them a heart of flesh,
that they may walk in my statutes and keep my ordinances and obey them; and they shall be my people, and I will be their God.

Go forth today, with the store of talents you have been given, and make the call. Tell of the place where the gift of talents flows without measure, where community, energized by the Spirit, builds its members up, not with pronouncements, but through faithfulness and loving care. Tell of the place where men and women grow like olive plants around the table of the Spouse — the Spouse Who loves without end. Amen.

November 16 – St. John Chrysostom from Homilies on Matthew

Let us hearken then to these words. As we have opportunity, let us help on our salvation, let us get oil for our lamps, let us labor to add to our talent. For if we be backward, and spend our time in sloth here, no one will pity us any more hereafter, though we should wail ten thousand times. He also that had on the filthy garments condemned himself, and profited nothing. He also that had the one talent restored that which was committed to his charge, and yet was condemned. The virgins again entreated, and came unto Him and knocked, and all in vain, and without effect.

Knowing then these things, let us contribute alike wealth, and diligence, and protection, and all things for our neighbor’s advantage. For the talents here are each person’s ability, whether in the way of protection, or in money, or in teaching, or in what thing soever of the kind. Let no man say, I have but one talent, and can do nothing; for you can even by one approve yourself. For you are not poorer than that widow; you are not more uninstructed than Peter and John, who were both “unlearned and ignorant men;” but nevertheless, since they showed forth a zeal, and did all things for the common good, they attained to Heaven. For nothing is so pleasing to God, as to live for the common advantage.

For this end God gave us speech, and hands, and feet, and strength of body, and mind, and understanding, that we might use all these things, both for our own salvation, and for our neighbor’s advantage. For not for hymns only and thanksgivings is our speech serviceable to us, but it is profitable also for instruction and admonition. And if indeed we used it to this end, we should be imitating our Master; but if for the opposite ends, the devil. Since Peter also, when he confessed the Christ, was blessed, as having spoken the words of the Father; but when he refused the cross, and dissuaded it, he was severely reproved, as savoring the things of the devil. But if where the saying was of ignorance, so heavy is the blame, when we of our own will commit many sins, what favor shall we have? — Homily on Matthew XXV.

Irena Sendler projects

Four years ago, I first began filming Irena Sendler in Warsaw where she lives in a medical home. At 94, she still remembered how she and her friends in the Polish resistance risked torture and death to resue thousands of Jewish children from the Warsaw ghetto. This is their story — Mary Skinner, Producer and Director of “In the Name of Their Mothers.”

In the Name of Their Mothers is the film chronicling the work of Irena and her compatriots in Żegota. An advance screening of the film was held on Wednesday, November 12th at CREEES – Stanford University.

In the fall of 1999, a rural Kansas teacher encouraged four students to work on a year long National History Day project which would among other things; extend the boundaries of the classroom to families in the community, contribute to history learning, teach respect and tolerance, and meet our classroom motto, —He who changes one person, changes the world entire—.

Students from rural Kansas, discover a Catholic woman, who saved Jewish children. Few had heard of Irena Sendlerowa in 1999, now after 250 presentations of Life in a Jar, a web site with huge usage and world-wide media attention, Irena is known to the world. November 15 – Philoxenus from the Ascetic Discourses

It is meet for every man that would draw nigh to God that he should possess the mind of a child; and as a child is towards his father and mother, so should he be towards God and towards His dispensation. And as the child receiveth instruction from his master without searching into his words or examining his doctrine, and without judging in his thoughts that which he teacheth him —” for he hath not sufficient ability in his own thoughts to be a judge of what he heareth —” so also is it meet for the man to be towards God, neither enquiring into Him with his words, nor judging His deeds and actions in secret thoughts; for he is a child, and like a child he should incline his ear unto His instruction, and receive it with faith. And it was also for this reason that God gave birth to us a second time, that He might teach us that we were children and infants of the world born unto faith, for the womb which gave us birth —” that is, baptism in which the Spirit is mingled—”has been made the means. The disciple of God, then, should seek to have the remembrance of his Master Jesus Christ fixed in his soul and to meditate upon it day and night, And it is right for him to know where he should begin, and how and where he must raise the structure of his building, and how he should begin and finish it, that he be not laughed at by all those who pass along the road, even as our Lord spake concerning that man who began to build a tower and was not able to finish it, that he became a laughing-stock and a mockery to all who saw him. And who is this man who began the building of the tower of whom our Redeemer spake, if it be not the man who setteth out on the path of the Gospel of Christ? Now the beginning of the building of this disciple who hath agreed to go forth from the world and to keep the commandments is his promise and his covenant with God; and he should begin, and run his course, and finish it, collecting and bringing together from all places fine stones of a noble life and character for the building of the tower which reacheth up to heaven. Now the foundation is set and laid, and is, according to the word of Paul, “Jesus Christ our God,” and every man, howsoever he pleaseth, buildeth upon that foundation. For by His love the foundation hath been laid down once and for all to receive everything which might be set upon it, until the coming of the day of the revelation in which the work of every man will be tested and proved; and He who hath been the foundation stone in the corner of the building will go up and become the Judge and Head in the top of the building. November 13 – Philoxenus from the Ascetic Discourses

Our Lord and our Redeemer Jesus Christ in His living Gospel invited us to draw nigh in wisdom to the work of keeping His commandments, and to lay within ourselves the foundation of His discipline rightly, in order that the edifice of our life and character might mount up straightly. For he who knoweth not how to begin wisely the building of this tower which goeth up to heaven is not able to complete [it] or to bring it to the finish which is of wisdom. For knowledge and wisdom should order, and arrange, and work the beginning and end and founding [of the edifice], and whosoever beginneth thus is called a wise man by the word of our Redeemer, “Whosoever heareth these My words, and doeth them, is like unto a wise man who hath dug, and made deep, and set his building upon the rock: and the rain descended, and the rivers came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not; for its foundations were laid upon the rock. But whosoever heareth and doeth not, is like unto a foolish man who set his building upon the sand, and even if feeble things beat upon his building they will sweep it away.” We are therefore bound by the word of our Teacher not to be constant listeners only to the Word of God but also constant doers. For the man who, though listening not, doeth, is better than the man who is constant in listening and empty of works, even as the word of the apostle Paul teacheth us, “For not the hearers of the law are righteous before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified: for if the Gentiles which have no law do by their own nature [the things] of the law, these, having no law, are a law unto themselves; and they show the work of the law written upon their hearts, and their conscience testifieth concerning them.” The hearing of the law is good, for it bringeth to the works thereof, and reading and meditation in the Scriptures, which purify our secret understanding from thoughts of evil things, are good, but if a man is constant in reading, and in hearing, and in the meditation of the word of God, and yet perfecteth not by his reading the labour of works, against this man hath the Spirit of God spoken by the hand of the blessed David, rebuking and reproving his wickedness, and restraining him from taking even the Holy Book into his polluted hands, saying, “For to the sinner speaketh God, What “hast thou [to do] with the books of My commandments, that thou hast taken My covenant in thy mouth? Thou hast hated My instruction, and thou hast cast My words behind thee” — Prologue.
