U.S. ‘Catholic’ leaders take aim at Iran’s Christians

From Christian Newswire: Iran Sanctions Pass in Congress —“ Catholic Leaders Influential in Legislative Victory

These “Catholic” neo-con, more interested in politics than in Jesus, leaders seem to have forgotten how well sanctions and interventionist adventures worked against Iraq. Their warmongering, and the cheerleading they provided for the Bush regime, lead to the virtual destruction of Catholic and other Christian communities in Iraq as well as several thousands of American lives. Under Saddam, who was a secularist, Christian communities in Iraq were left in peace. Seems like these devils in sheep’s clothing (Matthew 7:15) want to set up what are left of the Armenians, Assyrians and members of the Chaldean Catholic Church of Iran for martyrdom. All for the greater glory of Go… oh yeah, interventionist U.S. government escapades.

These leaders are all for a nuclear free Iran. Perhaps they should focus on a nuclear free Middle East – thus the purge of Israel’s nuclear firepower. But of course, the United States has to sell its children to war just to prop up one country. Ezra Waldman, writing an opinion piece in the Albany Time Union asks:

Does [Ms. Hotaling] suggest that we cease supporting Israel? Whom would she support? Should we back Iraq, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt, Syria, Yemen and others?

How about this for the most simple, easy to understand answer… support no one, trade equally with all, and never ever intervene. If we were to do so, pulling completely out, the terrorism problem would disappear overnight.

Lithuanian scholar and Roman Catholic priest, Fr. Kstutis Kevalas, is the winner of the Acton Institute’s 2010 Novak Award.

During the past nine years, Fr. Kstutis Kevalas has initiated a new debate in Lithuania, introducing the topic of free market economics to religious believers, and presenting a new set of hitherto unknown questions to economists. Fr. Kevalas is a respected figure and well known expert on Christian social ethics, the free market, and human dignity to the people of his home country. In addition to his active work as a speaker and pastor at national events, he serves as a lecturer on moral theology at Vytautas Magnus University in Kaunas, Lithuania.

After studies at the Kaunas Priest Seminary and St. Mary’s Seminary and University in Baltimore, Md., Fr. Kevalas was ordained to the priesthood in 2000. In 2001, he received his Licentiate Degree in Theology writing the thesis “Catholic Social Teaching and Economic Development: A Case Study of Lithuania.” He received his Doctorate in Sacred Theology with his thesis on “The Origins and Ends of the Free Economy as Portrayed in the Encyclical Letter Centesimus Annus” in 2008.

The meek shall inherit…

The Economist had a really interesting story on the psychology of power in its January 23rd issue. See Absolutely.

What was unsettling about the article wasn’t the study itself, or even its findings, but rather the author’s conclusion:

However, an intriguing characteristic emerged among participants in high-power states who felt they did not deserve their elevated positions. These people showed a similar tendency to that found in low-power individuals—”to be harsh on themselves and less harsh on others—”but the effect was considerably more dramatic. They felt that others warranted a lenient 6.0 on the morality scale when stealing a bike but assigned a highly immoral 3.9 if they took it themselves. Dr Lammers and Dr Galinsky call this reversal —hypercrisy—.

They argue, therefore, that people with power that they think is justified break rules not only because they can get away with it, but also because they feel at some intuitive level that they are entitled to take what they want. This sense of entitlement is crucial to understanding why people misbehave in high office. In its absence, abuses will be less likely. The word —privilege— translates as —private law—. If Dr Lammers and Dr Galinsky are right, the sense which some powerful people seem to have that different rules apply to them is not just a convenient smoke screen. They genuinely believe it.

What explains hypercrisy is less obvious. It is known, though, from experiments on other species that if those at the bottom of a dominance hierarchy show signs of getting uppity, those at the top react both quickly and aggressively. Hypercrisy might thus be a signal of submissiveness—”one that is exaggerated in creatures that feel themselves to be in the wrong place in the hierarchy. By applying reverse privileges to themselves, they hope to escape punishment from the real dominants. Perhaps the lesson, then, is that corruption and hypocrisy are the price that societies pay for being led by alpha males (and, in some cases, alpha females). The alternative, though cleaner, is leadership by wimps.

Rather stark: Be led by the immoral and unethical, or be led by the weak.

The problem of course is that business is unethical at its roots because its core motivations are not based on a system of ethics. The Economist, being the creature that it is, places no stress whatsoever on ascribing to a system of comprehensive ethics. They would likely agree that the strongest motivation in business is profit. As such the alphas tend to succeed because they stay married to the goal and its achievement, regardless of cost. I would bet that if slavery were legal again, and it could be carried off economically, business would opt for the lower cost of production.

In discussion of business ethics the maxim: ‘unethical behavior invites risk’ is often cited. But what is the risk? The risk (if you are not a believer) is jail, fines, and lawsuits. Others state, ‘unethical business practices create ill-will among customers,’ usually coupled with ‘unethical businesses are bound to fail.’ I would posit that these maxims only point to the most obvious examples like ENRON, rather than the stuff that has been swept under the rug.

There’s a great History of Business Ethics by Richard T. De George that points to the religious underpinnings of ethics and the evolution of business ethics. When Good People Do Bad Things at Work by Dennis J. Moberg points to behaviors that contribute to unethical business behavior. To his point about Moral Exclusion:

A final problem that brings out the worst in good people is the very human tendency to morally exclude certain persons. This occurs when individuals or groups are perceived as outside the boundary in which moral values and considerations of fairness apply.

This applies not only in the way he envisions, but in the reverse. As the Economist article points out, business leaders and people of power ordinarily and regularly exclude themselves from moral behavior.

To the Economist article, I would say that while we may self-stratify, we should take efforts to encourage the powerful and those without power to act ethically. This may involve boundaries, and the admission that faith values play a key formative role in people’s behaviors wherever they may be in the strata (I would love to see the study data tied to the religious upbringing and current faith practices of its respondents). But would the common values found in faith and moral codes make us all wimps?

What Sen. Enzi really wants

M. Patricia Smith’s nomination as Solicitor of the Department of Labor has moved forward with a cloture vote today along party lines. There should be an up-or-down vote on the nomination tomorrow or the day after. See SENATUS for details on the vote.

Senator Enzi, the leading Republican on the Senate HELP Committee, had been blocking the nomination, for no good, valid, or honest reason. As both Republicans and Democrats have done in recent years, he has abused the whole practice of filibuster (I’ll write more on that later).

To respond to his ignorant criticism would take volumes. Frankly, he is scandalous in his use of innuendo and distorted facts to paint those he doesn’t like as incompetent managers and liars (an example of his blathering at the Washington Examiner). I would hate to be his child and have made a mistake. Of course his blather is par for the course in Washington (a pox on both houses). If someone won’t bow to your personal agenda, destroy them by whatever means possible.

Sen. Harkin, no flaming liberal, provided the facts that refute Sen. Enzi line by line during his pre-cloture vote statements. The Congressional Record should have his factual testimony in-full by tomorrow. I encourage you to check it out.

So to my title above, ‘What does Sen. Enzi really want?’ I believe he wants the following:

  • That workers not be educated as to their rights under the law.
  • That low wage workers have no recourse when their wages are stolen.
  • That any person or organization providing assistance only do so according to an approved script and to approved eligible individuals.
  • That employers who skirt the rules, especially those who hire low wage and immigrant workers presuming that they can abuse them, be free to establish a system of indentured servitude.
  • That disreputable, race-to-the-bottom, employers be free to re-establish the company store and a chit and voucher program.
  • That rights are only for those in Sen. Enzi’s social and economic demographic.
  • That the law is only a set of suggestions and optional guidelines, especially laws that protect the lower classes.
  • That truth be subservient to agenda.
  • That the United States be known as the land of permanent masters and servants.
  • That the Republican Party abjure its tie to the abolition of slavery.

Amy Traub, writing at Huffington, gives a great narrative on the things Ms. Smith has done and works to prevent in New York in New York’s Hidden Crime Wave

And we thought crime in New York City was low. According to the NYPD just 418 robberies were reported in New York last week, along with 695 incidents of grand larceny. Not bad for a city of more than 8 million people. But the rosy numbers overlook a devastating series of thefts that never make it into the police statistics: last week the city may have experienced just 375 burglaries but it also saw an estimated 317,263 cases of employer wage theft from their own low wage workers. More than $18.4 million were stolen from wages in that week alone. And because the wage violations are systematic and ongoing, the crimes recur every week throughout the year.

The shocking new wage theft data come from research [pdf] unveiled this morning by the National Employment Law Project. After a rigorous study involving thousands of front-line workers in New York’s low wage industries, researchers documented the prevalence of New York City’s workplace violations for the first time.

The study reveals a crime wage centered on the city’s most vulnerable workers. More than one in five workers in the city’s low-wage industries was paid less than the minimum wage. More than three in four were denied the overtime pay they were legally owed. When workers tried to stand up for themselves (for example, by filing a complaint with a government agency or attempting to organize a union) they faced a high risk of illegal employer retaliation: being fired, getting their hours cut, or having the boss threaten to call immigration authorities. Not surprisingly, many workers decided to remain silent, even as they continued to work in dangerous conditions or saw their earnings stolen.

Imagine the destructive impact on New York’s families and communities. Although the average worker in the city’s low-wage industries earns just $20,644 a year, they lost an average 15 percent of that to wage theft. That amounts to an average $3,016 annually stolen from some of the lowest-income working families in the city…

Are you ready for your employer to arbitrarily cut your salary by 15%? That 15% cut isn’t for any good economic reason, and certainly no legal reason. It is just so you can continue to work the same hours at less pay, and he can take it home to buy himself a better bottle of scotch. Maybe he’ll share that scotch with Sen. Enzi. Wonder if he hypocritically likes it neat.

Funny that my son was recently studying indentured servitude. I can’t wait till my son learns about human trafficking. I will be able to point to Sen. Enzi (if he’s still there) as a proponent of the very things that aid in its continuance.

The Art of Gaetano Porcasi

I received a comment on a post in relation to the art of Gaetano Porcasi. The comment really didn’t fit the post, and does not really appear to be a spam comment either. I checked out the artist’s website and enjoyed what I found there. You may as well – sort of a retrospective on Sicilian village life and the affect of corrupt power on the lives of common people.

Gaetano Porcasi is a Sicilian artist and school art teacher. His paintings are considered unique not only for their social and political commitment but also for the technique and choice of typical Mediterranean colours from which a strong and deep Sicilitudine (Sicilian mood) emerges.

The 2003 itinerant exhibition Portella della Ginestra Massacre is a good example: in 1947 a group of Sicilian farmers was shot and killed in Portella by the outlaw Salvatore Giuliano and his men under orders from the local Mafia mobsters and big landowners in order to stop the farmers’ attempts to occupy and plant uncultivated local land. His historical paintings which denounce the violence and oppression of the Mafia find their counterpart in his paintings which depict sunny Sicilian landscapes rich in lemon, orange and olive trees, in prickly pear, agave and broom plants. They show the wealth of a land that has been kissed by God but downtrodden by man.

In painting the sky of his native Sicily Gaetano uses several different hues of blue and it’s from this sky that his pictorial journey starts. In his paintings the history of Sicily, which has always been marked by its farmers’ sweat and blood and by their struggles for freedom and democracy, finds its pictorial expression in the fusion of the red flags of the workers with the Italian flag in a sort of Italian and Mediterranean epopea. The red flags and the Italian flag stand out against the blue sky that changes its hues according to the events, the seasons, the deeds and the moods that are painted on the canvas. The luxuriant nature of Sicily with its beautiful, sunny, Mediterranean landscapes seems to remain the silent, unchangeable and unchanged witness to events and the passing of time. Here people are only accidenti, they aren’t makers of their own life. Thus Gaetano makes a clear-cut metaphysical distinction between a benign, merciful nature and Man who breaks the natural harmony to satisfy his wild, unbridled ambition and selfishness and who becomes the perpetrator of violence and crime. Gaetano is also an active environmentalist and his fight against all forms of pollution has already cost him a lot.

What is Eastern Europe

From The Economist: Wrongly labelled: The economic downturn has made it harder to speak sensibly of a region called —eastern Europe—

IT WAS never a very coherent idea and it is becoming a damaging one. —Eastern Europe— is a geographical oddity that includes the Czech Republic (in the middle of the continent) but not Greece or Cyprus (supposedly —western— Europe but in the far south-east). It makes little sense historically either: it includes countries (like Ukraine) that were under the heel of the Soviet empire for decades and those (Albania, say) that only brushed it. Some of those countries had harsh planned economies; others had their own version of —goulash communism— (Hungary) or —self-managed socialism— (Yugoslavia).

Already unreliable in 1989, the label has stretched to meaninglessness as those countries’ fortunes have diverged since the collapse of communism. The nearly 30 states that once, either under their own names or as part of somewhere else, bore the label —communist— now have more differences than similarities. Yet calling them —eastern Europe— suggests not only a common fate under totalitarian rule, but a host of ills that go with it: a troubled history then; bad government and economic misery now.

The economic downturn has shown how misleading this is. Worries about —contagion— from the banking crisis in Latvia raised risk premiums in otherwise solid economies such as Poland and the Czech Republic—”a nonsense based on outsiders’ perceptions of other outsiders’ fears. In fact, the continent’s biggest financial upheaval is in Iceland (see article, article), and the biggest forecast budget deficits in the European Union next year will not be in some basket-cases from the ex-communist —east— but in Britain and in Greece. The new government in Athens is grappling with a budget deficit of at least 12.7% of GDP and possibly as much as 14.5%. European Commission officials are discussing that in Greece this week…

Of course Eastern Europe was always a political construct arising from a natavist world view coupled with anti-communist politics of the Cold War. Geographically, the center of Europe is in Lithuania, and Poland is resolutely in the middle of Central Europe.

It is also interesting to note that several Cold War constructs still prevail. Poles are the last “Eastern Europeans” who need a visa to travel to the United States, and at a prohibitive cost at that. Also, there is still a lack of degree equivalency so that Poles coming to the U.S., as doctors, dentists, and in other professions, must finance a whole second education. All of this is what’s left of an unfortunate history, one, as the article suggests, that we must get beyond.

Mixing religion, politics, and gross over reaction

Mike Rasberry who blogs at Ponderings discusses the National Council of Churches in National Council of Churches–A leftist Group of Individual Denominations.

Mr. Rasberry indicts each and every member of the organization, from the Orthodox and PNCC to the Quakers. He paints each and every Church as grossly liberal and supportive of every sort of evil, including abortion, although he does give a bye to American Conference of Catholic Bishops calling it a “rare exception to this group.”

The problems here are obvious and really enlightening as to the ignorance among certain Christians. Some Christians know nothing of their brothers and sisters. That ignorance starts in a refusal to study the policies and theologies of other Churches. Couple that with this mix of personal politics and religion and you get just this sort of diatribe. Of course Mr. Rasberry sees Roman Catholics as ok because they happen to have a good PR team which focuses almost solely on one or two hot issues — at least he’s read that in the MSM. If he really went deeper and understood the Roman Church’s anti-war, anti-death penalty, justice for immigrants, and pro-labor stances he would equally tar them as leftist whack jobs.

Lesson to be learned – if you are going to criticize thirty-five of thirty-six different Churches and encourage people to refuse their support, all based on personal politics – you will find yourself in a very lonely place. If you are going to deny Christian fellowship with the vast majority of those who still identify as Christians in this country then you might as well join the Westboro Baptist Church — Fred Phelps will welcome you.

Rather, I highly suggest study so you at least know what you’re criticizing. Learn what Churches really stand for. They just might agree with you on most things (or not). Then again, its easier to pick at the speck your perceive in someone else’s eye (Matthew 7:3-5).

Speaking of Russian history – Stalin нет (No!)

From the Kosciuszko Society and the Huffington Post: Josef Stalin Must Not Be Honored At The National D-Day Memorial.

The National D-Day Memorial website notes:

At the eastern entrance of the walk leading to Elmon T. Gray Plaza, the action on the European Theater’s eastern front will be acknowledged with a portrait of Marshal Joseph Stalin, General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.

The National D-Day Memorial in Virginia has, unfortunately, decided honor Josef Stalin by placing his bust on a pedestal at its museum.

Several Polish war veterans in New York, who fought against Stalin and Hitler asked Alex Storozynski, President & Executive Director of the Kosciuszko Foundation, to write something about this outrageous development. His father and grandfather both fought against Nazi and Soviet troops during WWII. His article appears on the Huffington Post. Feel free to add your own comments.

On Russian history

A new two-volume history of Russia’s turbulent 20th century is being hailed inside and outside the country as a landmark contribution to the swirling debate over Russia’s past and national identity.

Written by 45 historians led by Andrei Zubov, a professor at the institute that serves as university to the Russian Foreign Ministry, the weighty history —” almost 1,000 pages per volume —” was published this year by AST Publishers and is already in its second printing of 10,000 copies.

Retailing at the rough equivalent of $20 a volume and titled —History of Russia. XX Century,— the books try to rise above ideologically charged clashes over Russia’s historical memory. They are critical both of czarist and Communist Russia, and incorporate the history of Russian emigration and the Russian Orthodox Church into the big picture of a chaotic, violent century. While written from a clearly Christian perspective —” one author is a Russian Orthodox priest…

Eminent historians in the United States and Poland who often take a critical view of Russia’s passionate, partisan discussion of history lauded its balance.

Being poor, being hopeless

From the Spokesman-Review: Effects of growing up in poor households can be lifelong

When Lori Pfingst considers the statistics that will tell the tale of this recession, she isn’t thinking about GDP or unemployment.

She’s thinking about teen pregnancy. Low birthweight babies. WASL scores and college enrollments.

As the recession swells the ranks of the impoverished, it takes a particular, long-term toll on children, experts say. In Washington state alone, nearly 40,000 children are expected to slip into poverty by 2010; nationwide, an additional 800,000 kids entered poverty between 2007 and 2008, before the recession really hit.

And however quickly the economy begins its official recovery, the consequences for kids living in poverty are wide-ranging. Children who grow up in poor households tend to do worse in school and end up in trouble with the law. They’re less likely to go to college and more likely to get pregnant at a young age. They’re more likely to commit crimes or become victims of crimes, and more likely to grow up and live in poverty themselves.

—The impact of this really can’t be overstated,— said Pfingst, assistant director of Washington KidsCount, an annual statistical survey of children’s well-being. —When children are born into poverty, it affects every single outcome of their lives.—

A new report from Duke University asserts that the recession will undo decades of progress for children and families. Duke’s Child and Youth Well-Being Index measures a range of categories; it estimates that all progress made in —family economic well-being— since 1975 will be wiped out by this recession.

The Duke index predicts that families will suffer from the expected kinds of effects, such as joblessness, lower incomes or homelessness. But it also suggests that children will pay other prices, in greater obesity and health problems, because families will be more likely to rely on low-cost fast food; on social relationships and stability, as families are forced to move; and on increased behavioral problems and crime, with young people as both victims and perpetrators.

—The impact of the current recession on children will be dramatic,— the Duke report concludes…

Two things. First, simply said, a tragedy that none of the Wall Street moguls will ever consider or reflect on. Second, in spite of negative pressures caused by the recession we have an underlying current of hopelessness far greater than that ever experienced by the poor and nearly poor of generations past. Their grounding in faith, neighborhood, and family stood as a bulwark against just these sorts of pressures.

When I look at our great Fraternal, the PNU, and the history of the PNCC, in fact most of the faith communities inhabited by immigrants, I see people who counted what was important. They knew that with God in front, family and co-workers in union, they could withstand whatever the world could throw at them; not only withstand, but struggle and succeed. I may be a hopeless romantic, or too nostalgic, but I believe that we are capable of the same today. Being poor does not equate with hopelessness and lifelong despair, it is the crucible in which we are tested. We are challenged, not to re-create the past, but to build a new and re-grounded future.
