A Jazz Prayer

The latest, named “Prayer” from an up-and-coming Polish Jazz artist Karolina Glazer. The song “Prayer” is a solo vocal only. There is no accompaniment. I think she’s remarkable.

Karlona Glazer was born on June 10, 1982 in Gliwice, Poland. Karolina was brought up within an environment of people involved in art. Her house has always been full of music, dance and plastic arts. She began her adventure with jazz when she was only a teenager, spending time at jam sessions in the Silesian Jazz Club in Gliwice. She was a student of Krystyna Pronko and Anna Serafinska. She also developed her voice during International Workshops in SLS Vocal Technique conducted by American lecturers.

In 2003 she was won a prestigious XXX International Festival Of Jazz Vocalists in Zamość, Poland. It enabled her to continue her musical development and resulted in performances at various concerts in Poland (Smart Jazzpol Festival 2003, Bluse over Bóbr 2004, Gogowskie Spotkania Jazzowe, Pilsner Urquel Jazz 2005, Colours of sound 2006). She has been well received by the critics and journalists (Jazz Forum, Jazzi Magazine). In 2004, according to fusion.pl survey, she classified fourth in popularity ranking (vocalist / vocal group) in Poland. As professionals say: the jazz environment recognizes her as a rising star of Polish jazz vocalism.

Karolina specializes in an instrumental approach to human voice and pays attention to scat improvisation technique. She experiments with her vocals by using her great imagination and a 4-octave scale. Her music is characterized by an improvisational and colourful approach to jazz.

The Ychtis Girl’s Choir to perform in Buffalo, NY

The Ychtis (from the Greek word for fish) Girls Choir, made up of girls from the Katowice area in Poland, will visit Buffalo next week Thursday and Friday.

The group will perform on Friday, July 25 at 7pm in Corpus Christi Church. They will also sing at the Polish Mass at 11:30 am on Thursday.

Admission is free, and free will offerings to benefit the choir will be welcome and appreciated.

The girls of the Ychtis Choir are chosen from families that are not very well to do and are provided an opportunity for professional song and dance training.

Opportunities for undergraduate study in Rzeszów, Poland

The University of Information Technology and Management (UITM) at Rzeszow, Poland, is offering B.Sc. degree with specialisation in aviation management.

The English medium course is offered in collaboration with Bonn University, Germany, and includes a one-year practical training with Lufthansa airlines. Admissions are now underway and classes commence in October.

Sad news from Poland – Bronislaw Geremek killed in a car crash

From the BBC: Polish ex-minister Geremek dies

Bronislaw Geremek, a key anti-communist dissident and former Polish foreign minister, has been killed in a car crash, police have announced.

Mr Geremek, 76, died when the car he was in hit an oncoming vehicle in western Poland on Sunday afternoon.

He was one of the key advisers to Lech Walesa, the Solidarity union leader which helped topple communist rule.

Mr Geremek was foreign minister from 1997-2000 and European Parliament member since 2004.
Mr Geremek died when his Mercedes car collided with a van near the western town of Lubien, police spokeswoman Hanna Wachowiak said.

It was not immediately clear on whether he was driving at the time.

The former foreign minister – a historian by training – oversaw his country’s accession to Nato.

Mobile content key element of cross-platform launch into Poland by kids brand.

MTV Networks International today unveiled the latest addition to its growing portfolio, Nickelodeon Poland.

A content shopfront on the Orange World portal has been launched in support of a new TV channel serving up the likes of Dora the Explorer, Spongebob Squarepants and Jimmy Neutron.

Nickelodeon will also be launching online with a Polish language website which will provide users with an online community, games, downloads and an online broadband video platform.

Bhavneet Singh, managing director of MTVNI’s emerging markets division said: —Our Polish team has done a tremendous job in creating what will no doubt become the standout go-to destination for Polish kids of all ages both on and off-air—.

Polish fest in Mosinee, WI

From the Wausau Daily Herald: Polish fest celebrates ethnicity, togetherness

MOSINEE — The Rev. Marion Talaga is proud that his church celebrates central Wisconsin’s Polish heritage — but that doesn’t mean the festival in its honor is by any means exclusive.

“We want everyone to come,” he said, casting aside preferences of nationality, religion and background in general. “I’m just enjoying these people.”

The 33rd annual Polish Fest, put on by Our Savior National Catholic Church in Mosinee, will be held Saturday and Sunday. Organizers are again promising traditional Polish food, live music and activities.

Traditional Polish food will include the pierogi — a large dumpling filled with various combinations of potatoes, cheese, meat or sauerkraut. But it’s not exclusive, Talaga said, with hamburgers and other popular items available.

Polka bands will provide the music, performing polka, country and other varieties of music. There also will be a polka dancing contest, and on Sunday the church’s popular polka Mass.

And kids can enjoy a variety of games, in addition to all the traditional fun.

The result is a well-rounded community event, Talaga said.

Talaga also emphasized the event’s affordability, with free admission and organizers keeping the price of food and games down.

That, he hopes, will encourage everyone to become a part of the tradition.

“We try to make sure that we do keep our tradition alive,” he said.

Remembering the Jewish population of Rzeszów

My family’s hometown in Poland used to be about 60% Jewish before World War 2 and the Nazi German attrocities of the war.

The participants walked the same route which through which the Rzeszow Jews were led to the Nazi concentration camp in Belzec.

On 8 July 1942 the Nazi German occupant began gathering all Jewish inhabitants of this south-eastern city on a square which is now named as the Square of Ghetto Victims. The majority of them were killed in the Belzec Nazi concentration camp.

The main ceremonies commemorating the victims are held near the Old Synagogue in Rzeszow.

W Rzeszowie odbył się marsz upamiętniający zagładę Żydów z tamtejszego getta. Główne uroczystości odbywają się przy “Kamieniu pamięci” na placu przed Synagogą Miejską , obecnie Archiwum Państwowym.

Kilkadziesiąt osób przemierzyło trasę z dworca Staroniwa na Plac Ofiar Getta. Tu 8 lipca 1942 roku Niemcy zgromadzili rzeszowskich Żydów, którzy następnie trafili do obozu zagłady w Bełżcu.

W uroczystościach wzięli udział obywatele Izraelam oraz Stanów Zjednoczonych i Kanady pochodzenia żydowskiego. Obecni są również przedstawiciele Fundacji Ochrony Dziedzictwa Żydowskiego w Polsce.

Polish Night at Pruyn House

The Friends Of Pruyn House are sponsoring Polish Night featuring the music of the Rymanowski Brothers Orchestra and a Polish Kitchen with Polish dishes prepared and served by the members of my parish, the Blessed Virgin Mary of Częstochowa Polish National Catholic Church, on Wednesday, July 9th. Deacon Phil S. Andrastek, age 69, Manitowoc, died Tuesday evening, July 1, 2008, at his residence. He was born Jan. 11, 1939, in Manitowoc, son of the late Stanley and Viola (Krejcie) Andrastek. Phil was a graduate of Manitowoc Lincoln High School, Class of 1957. After graduation, he entered the United States Army National Guard until 1965. On Oct. 11, 1958, he married the former Lucy Schultz at St. Mary [Roman] Catholic Church, Manitowoc. He was a 15-year veteran of the Manitowoc Police Department as a motorcycle officer, logging over 100,000 miles with the department. Phil had a short career as the owner of “Polish Phil’s.” He was employed as a security guard at the Manitowoc Company for many years. During his retirement, Phil was a member of the maintenance staff at Silver Lake College and noon supervisor at LB Clarke School, Two Rivers. Phil was ordained a Deacon with the Green Bay Diocese in the fall of 1986, being assigned to St. Mary Catholic Church in conjunction with Manitowoc Jail Ministry. He also ministered to numerous local nursing homes as well as St. Francis of Assisi Parish where he was a member…
