The PNCC and Labor – an old/new opportunity

A wonderful article from the Boston Review: God’s Work: What can faith-based activism do for labor?

—I came to Washington to work for God, FDR, and the millions of forgotten, plain, common workingmen,— recalled Frances Perkins. And so she did. From 1933 to 1945, Perkins helped create the core features of the New Deal state: minimum wage and maximum hours laws, legal guarantees for workers’ rights to organize and join unions, prohibition of child labor, Social Security, unemployment compensation, and fair labor standards. For all of the New Deal’s limitations, its laws and programs tamed Upton Sinclair’s —Jungle,— encouraged broad economic security and prosperity, and created, in economic terms, the most equitable America in history. And it was promoted and protected not only by strong unions but also by religious leaders, thanks to the prominence of a social gospel in the Catholic, Protestant, and Jewish traditions at mid-century. During her twelve years as secretary of labor, Perkins herself spent one day a month in contemplative retreat at a convent. For her, the reference to God was not simply a rhetorical flourish.

Since the 1970s economic inequality has surged to levels not seen since the 1920s, Dickensian abuses of workers have returned, and deregulation has enabled the worst economic catastrophe since the Great Depression. President Obama’s Secretary of Labor, Hilda Solis, faces challenges not unlike Perkins’s. Yet today, as in the 1930s, crisis also creates the opportunity for a bold new direction—”a New New Deal, potentially more inclusive of the nation’s diverse labor force than Perkins could have imagined. Might the nation’s churches, synagogues, mosques, and temples again have a role in rescuing a wayward economy?

In addressing this question, Solis can learn much from Kim Bobo, founder and Executive Director of Interfaith Worker Justice (IWJ). Bobo’s goal is to revive America’s justice-seeking prophetic tradition, with a particular focus on economic justice…

The PNCC has a strong tradition as an advocate for working men and women. Its immigrant and democratic roots were formed by men and women who were workers, who knew degradation at the hands of mine bosses, and who looked forward to a brighter, more democratic future. John J. Bukowczyk covers a lot of history in the Labor, Radicalism, and the Worker chapter in his book: Polish Americans and Their History: Community, Culture, and Politics.

The PNCC connection is both historic and full of opportunity. Knowing what I know from my 9-5 job, Ms. Bobo is correct in her assessments:

Labor laws today are such a mess that they bewilder and deter those who need them most. As Bobo notes, they are —woefully inadequate,— —incredibly confusing,— and barely enforced. She tells the story of Anka Karewicz, a twenty-year-old Polish immigrant to Chicago who, in order to stop a single employer from cheating and demeaning her and her fellow workers, would have had to contact three different federal agencies (the Department of Labor, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration) and two state agencies. Karewicz gave up.

Whatever a person’s ethnic background, whatever their status, the Church, our democratic Church, cannot stand by as the exploitation of working men and women continues. We are to stand with them, pray for them, and work together for a brighter future for all of God’s children.

10 reasons I’m a National Catholic —” Reason 3: We worship beautifully

This post closely follows and expands upon my last post which focused on the Church’s sacramental life, especially as it relates to the Holy Mass.

The sacraments are the key constitutive elements in the grace filled communication that exists between God and man. The sacraments are the foundational parts of our worship structure while the liturgy, the process or worship, is the dynamic structure in which they live. Worship surrounds the sacraments like the beauty of a monstrance surrounds the ultimate beauty of our Lord and Savior in the Holy Eucharist. As a monstrance reflects our human effort at giving glory, worship, and praise to God, our worship gives glory and praise to God.

Imagine, if you will, a liturgical experience that simply covers the core. In the PNCC you would have an imparting of penance and absolution, the reading, psalm, epistle, gospel, and homily, an epiclesis and institution narrative, and the distribution of the Eucharist. There’s a lot there, and I don’t mean to downplay the fact that those elements are essential, but such a liturgy would be sparse, like a museum with beautiful works of art set against unfinished walls (no offence to avant garde displays).

A little bit on my personal history ties in here. I was raised in Buffalo’s Kaisertown section, and grew up in the shadow of the glory that was St. Casimir’s R.C. Church — Byzantine architecture, glorious altar, art, statuary, pipe organ, seating 1,500 congregants. My church life began prior to the abuses that followed Vatican II. When I began serving at the altar the priests still opened drawers, one for each color of fiddleback chasuble. They vested slowly, with care. Each experience of the Holy Mass, each extra-liturgical service, conveyed what was intended, the sadness of the penitent; the glory of the resurrection. The chalice was a chalice, the priests keen on proper liturgy. As one of my college professors once stated: ‘The architecture of the church is about lifting ones eyes and hearts to the light of God.’ They had that and more spot on.

Needless to say, my journey post 1980 was a procession of disappointments. It wasn’t the architecture of the churches I was in, since in Buffalo nearly every city parish was a near cathedral. In the older churches the disciplined priests were gone; at least those disciplined enough to care about the Church as something greater than them. In the newer churches it was rather that the liturgy mimicked their architecture — thrown together, undisciplined, made up, wing-it on the fly liturgy. Moving to Albany I found it only got worse. Those of us who have been around long enough to know the difference saw it coming in dribs and drabs. We weren’t lifting our eyes and hearts to God in the liturgy any more; we cared more about ourselves and our show.

Not to be a quitter I kept looking. I explored parishes. I sought, but I didn’t find. I even tried R.C. indult MassesThe older, pre 1962, form of the R.C. Church’s Rite which is now more generously allowed for. The allowance for offering this Rite is available to all Roman Catholic Western Rite priests excepting those in the dioceses of the various bishops who ‘illegally’ oppose it (many). This Rite of the Holy Mass is still offered in Latin, and as I have posited, the Latin will act as an impediment to broader acceptance and understanding. It will remain a cold relic unable to speak its beauty to the vast majority of the faithful who would otherwise accept it.. Maybe that was the turning point. I had romanticized it, thought it would speak to me again, but it was cold —“ a cold language done with cold gestures for the sake of gesture. I was acclimated to and desired entertainmentWhy many Roman Catholics, especially in the U.S., will miss out on what is being conveyed in the older Rite. They want entertainment and what they perceive as relevancy. The brainwashing has been effective.. I was there for me —“ not for God. I felt something had been stolen from me.

People may say that the Holy Mass is all about disposition, using your intellect as a remedy to overcome the failings of the priest and the architect. We’re supposed to be there for God after all! Those who believe that intellect is the arbiter see man as a dichotomy, as an intellect in opposition to the body. That argument is false on its face. God speaks to man as a whole. God’s desire was the very reason God became incarnate. God didn’t come to us as body alone or intellect alone, but as man —“ to speak to man.

The Church needs to unite man’s mind and body, bringing the totality of our being before God. We cannot overcome a Church’s failing through intellect alone. We cannot reason our way out of a forced dichotomy, a dichotomy where the Church says one thing, but does something entirely different (on a regular basis). The liturgy is that place in which the Church unites man’s mind, body, and soul in praise of God.

My search continued until my wife stumbled upon a PNCC parish that was holding all the traditional rites, blessings, and liturgies for Holy Week and Easter. I thought: well ok, perhaps. I wasn’t sure —“ and my Roman Catholic fears jumped right up to confront me. Would I go straight to hell if I tried this, even once? It’s silly in retrospect. Unfortunately many in the Roman Church live at that level; they fail to take the chance to free themselves from worship that leaves them cold, confused, or uncertain.

I sat in Church expectant, hungry, and there it was: liturgy, beautiful liturgy, in English, with solemnity that befitted the worship of God, and that was carried out with a genuine heart. The parish’s architecture was a blending of old and new. It was beautiful, not a cathedral, but beautiful. Best of all the Rites and the Holy Mass weren’t banal. It wasn’t off-the-cuff. The priest said the black and did the red, but with love for the Church’s worship. The parish cared, the priest cared. Wow!

The PNCC does worship beautifully. I experience the beauty of God in the Church’s liturgy, in its extra-liturgical devotions, in every manner from the way our bishops and priests vest to the way they pray. In big and small ways our liturgy is all about lifting our eyes, our hearts, our voices, and our minds to God. We meet God in our liturgy and we meet him as men and women who are body, mind, and soul. When you visit a PNCC parish, pick up a pew missal. You can actually follow along because no one is winging the Holy Mass.

I am blessed, as are many PNCC parishes, in that my priest offers the different Rites for the Holy Mass (Traditional, the Hodur Rite, and the Contemporary). By offering the different Rites, in the yearly cycleNot many Roman Catholics can say that they’ve experienced, or even know about, the different Rites available in their own Church, from the Byzantine and the various Eastern Rites to the Mozarabic, Ambrosian, Dominican, Bragan, Carmelite, or Carthusian, we keep in touch with the larger prayer of the Church, i.e., the totality of the Church’s prayer. Our priest offers the Holy Mass facing the liturgical East regardless of the Rite, and it works. We all face God in our prayer.

Our liturgies are beautiful. Our liturgies are that glorious monstrance with Christ at the center, surrounded by the Holy Mass and further gloried by those dear devotions (May Crowning, Marian, Sacred Heart, Precious Blood, Rosary, Bitter Lamentations, Stations of the Cross, processions, special blessings, so much more) which highlight, worship, praise, and glorify the multitude of God’s aspect.

I agree with Bishop V. Gene Robinson? Yep.

From the Los Angeles Times: Gay Episcopal bishop visits Studio City

In response to a question about how the parish should respond to the passage of Proposition 8, the bishop suggested that churches could begin mending the split on same-sex marriage by having clergy get out of the civil marriage business altogether.

Robinson, who supports gay marriage, said he favors the system used in France and other parts of Europe in which civil marriage — performed by government officials — is completely separate from religious vows.

In the U.S., the civil and religious are often combined, with the cleric signing the government marriage license.

“In this country, it has become very confusing about where the civil action begins and ends and where the religious action begins and ends, because we have asked clergy to be agents of the state,” he said.

Last summer, Robinson and his longtime partner had their civil commitment ceremony blessed in the church. He said that “untangling” the roles of clergy and government in this country would focus the discussion of same-sex marriage on civil rights rather than religion.

“The church is infringing on the secular society and trying to enforce its beliefs onto the entire culture,” he said. “If we can get these two things separated, we can assure every religious group, no matter how conservative, that they will never have to bless these marriages.”

“I think we could actually gain some support from our detractors if we could make this separation clear,” he said…

The one statement I disagree with is: “…we can assure every religious group, no matter how conservative, that they will never have to bless these marriages.” No Church has to do anything the government demands of it as it is, nor can they be forced to, even under penalty of law. If Church is true to its faith — faith in God, not government, adherence to God’s commandments, not man’s, then it will reject falsehood whatever the penalty. A long line of martyrs and confessors attests to that.

To that point, I have commented on the Church’s complicity with government in prior posts and won’t re-cover that territory. In short, the co-mingling of faith, politics, and governmental administration is in-and-of-itself a wrong. The Church should encourage the good that governments do, but should do so without acquiescence to an agenda beyond that immediate good. Churches must use care so as not cloud their message. Yoking themselves with unbelievers’ (2 Corinthians 6:14) agendas detracts from the Church’s mission.

Reading Bishop Robinson I am reminded of a post by former blogger, the Rev. Jim Tucker (unfortunately his posts are no longer publicly available), in which he discusses marriage and the motivations of young couples who appear in church for the pomp and circumstance, never to cross the threshold again once married. Bifurcating civil co-habitation contracts from ecclesiastical marriages would do a lot to end the extravagance and expense associated with “marriages for show.” Do couples come to church intending to embark upon a life of faith, or do they come intending to embark on a one night party? In many cases I fear the later. They are caught in a moment blinded by expectation and rarely consider the consequences. That unthinking action, that type of marriage, is more harmful to the institution of marriage than any myriad of civil co-habitation contracts.

Do civil co-habitation contracts open the slippery slope which posits that once “gay marriages” are allowed all evil will break loose, to wit: polygamous marriages? From my perspective the same rules apply. If people want to enter into a civil co-habitation contract of any form then let them. The problem with such arrangements as practiced by fundamentalist Mormons is that they are a.) abusive and b.) an excuse for latching onto the public dole via welfare and Medicaid fraud. A good civil co-habitation contract and the enforcement of current laws would rule those options out. I don’t see many willing to enter into such a contract if it forces them to give up X% of their estate should the contract fail.

In the end a person who believes is required to subject themselves to the teaching of the Church. That choice, one we each must make with our God given freedom, doesn’t make life easy and demands sacrifice, but is essential to our call to be faithful. We are all called to make the choice, not “a” choice, but the choice.

The recent Miss USA controversy is a case in point. Miss Prejean stood by her Church and its teaching. For that she was ridiculed by those who do not believe in freedom of conscience or expression — the new communists and overlords. The words of Keith Lewis, Co-Executive Director of K2 Productions (the sponsor of the Miss California USA) in the organization’s Official statement regarding Miss CA USA 2009 final answer controversy better reflect the attitude of those who love and respect freedom (emphasis mine):

I am proud of Carrie Prejean’s beauty and placement at the 2009 MISS USA pageant. I support Carrie’s right to express her personal beliefs even if they do not coincide with my own. I believe the subject of gay marriage deserves a great deal more conversation in order to heal the divide it has created.

Freedom is beautiful. The overlords…not so much.

Cover your Jesus

From CNA: Georgetown students react to White House request to cover Jesus’ name

Georgetown University’s decision to comply with a White House request to cover up the —IHS— monogram representing Jesus’ name at President Obama’s speech on Wednesday is drawing fire from the Cardinal Newman Society and Georgetown students, who are charging the university with —sacrificing— its —Catholic and Jesuit identity.—

Reports surfaced today from attendees at President Obama’s speech on the economy that the White House asked Georgetown University to cover up several emblems, including an IHS monogram above the president’s head during his speech at the Jesuit university.

Although President Obama focused his speech on his administration’s plans to spur economic growth, some in attendance noticed that the IHS monogram—”an early 3rd century abbreviation for the name of Jesus—”was covered up for the speech.

CNA attempted to confirm the report with Georgetown officials, but no one available for comment before press time.

However, Julie Green Bataille, associate vice president for communications at the university, told CNSNews.com that the covering up of Jesus’ name was prompted by —logistical arrangements for yesterday’s event.— According to Bataille, —Georgetown honored the White House staff’s request to cover all of the Georgetown University signage and symbols behind Gaston Hall stage.—

She said the —signage and symbols— were covered up because —the pipe and drape wasn’t high enough by itself to fully cover the IHS and cross— and that it seemed more —respectful to have them covered— so that viewers wouldn’t see them —out of context…—

IHSFrankly I do not blame the Obama Administration. They are being true to who they are and to what they represent. If they believe they have the savior on-hand why bring up the name of the other One.

I could say that the real fault lies with the Administration at Georgetown. By covering the name of Jesus they are not being true to who they are. But, is that so?

As Christians we hope that other Christians will be true to who they are. We feel a great sense of disappointment when our brothers and sisters fall short of our expectation. We hope and wish that Christians in academia, in politics, in ordinary life will set an example in relation to the immutability of their Christian faith. When they do not meet our expectation, as in this case, we are left to sort out who is being true to their beliefs. We point to the martyrs who chose death over denying Jesus, and we are left to wonder.

Our conclusion does not yield blame. Our conclusion must free itself of expectation, of false notion. The early Christians had a system of codes so that they would know their fellow travelers. We need to re-establish the outward marker, the sign by which we will know. Intellectual faith, the faith of the academics, has its place, but that doesn’t make one a Christian. The sign on the wall does not make one a Christian. Hanging a cross in the classroom doesn’t make one a Christian. What we do (or don’t do), for all to see, makes it so.

It is easy to quote scripture in relation to what has been done. This scripture is key:

“So every one who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven; but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven.” — Matthew 10:32-33

What does our doing and not doing say? This scripture is the measuring stick. I do not think that our Lord will count the number of Ph.D.’s we have obtained, or the number of books and scholarly articles on our C.V. Here is the test. Did you acknowledge Me beforeIn front of and above. men?

10 reasons I’m a National Catholic — Reason 2: Penance, The Word, The Eucharist

There’s a lot of emphasis on the indicia that mark a denomination of believers as Catholic, even as a Church. Often times it boils down to the Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed and the key phrase toward the end of the Creed – One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic (we Nat’s like to tack on the word “democratic” to the end of One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic in our advertising and websites since it gets our point across). While those key constitutive elements, clearly stated in the Creed, tend to be the agreed markers of the Catholic Church, they loose their efficacy as a definitive statement once a believer gets past the lessons taught in his or her catechism class, or gives up on the theological debates among on-line pundits. What then makes us Catholic?

For me, the Polish National Catholic Church’s focus on the sacramental life brings the reality of Catholicism home and does so each week. The three core sacraments of Penance, the Word, and the Holy Eucharist are central to reinforcing believers’ Catholicism; to making it completely real in their lives. The sacraments present Christ over and over in a reality that sets us free, builds us up, and nourishes us. They do this, not as an exercise, not as jumble of words, but in the doing, in the physical markers that impart forgiveness, educate and enlighten, and feed.

The key to Catholicism is its reality. The Catholic sacraments are not an exercise aimed at mimicry, at pretense, some sort of fantasy re-enacting of a thing done long ago. The sacraments aren’t words for debate or recitation. We’re not passing bread and grape juice (I like it, but it isn’t what Jesus drank) for the sake of being good Christian buddies. The Sacraments are, by definition and by faith, the fullness of Catholic reality.

As the priest or bishop gives penance, and stretches out his hand to impart absolution, we are forgiven. That forgiveness is real and is spoken on behalf of God and the community. The slate is clean and we are free from sin. We are as washed as were the disciples that night in the upper room. We are given the grace necessary to bring about amendment in our lives. As the deacon, priest, or bishop proclaims the Gospel, and teaches, our minds are enlightened. We hear Jesus teaching us, Jesus making the Gospel as real today and it was when He walked the earth. The Gospel is applied to our lives, to our community, to our families, work situations, neighborhoods, and conflicts. We are enlightened and filled with the grace necessary to do as Christ would have us do. As the Holy Eucharist is placed on our tongues (by a bishop, priest, or deacon) we receive the fullness of Jesus Christ. His body, blood, soul and divinity enter us. We take Him and eat Him so that we may be more and more like Him. By the grace of that taking and eating we are transformed into the food we have received — His body.

As National Catholics we gather for Holy Mass. At each Holy Mass we receive these three sacraments — Penance, the Word, and the Holy Eucharist. Our Catholicism is made real and present in our lives — a Catholic reality that is ever proportionate to our sacramental life. Not only are we real, but real in the manner Christ desired. We come to the table clean, instructed by His word, and feed on Him.

I am National Catholic because I abhor unreality and pretense. With my whole heart and soul I desire to be washed clean, to be taught, and to be made one with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. I desire the fullness of the sacramental life left to us in the Catholic Church. I desire to be Catholic.

Desiring that fullness I found the National Church, the Church where the sacraments are guarded faithfully, where their reality is accepted. I found a Church that will not, and cannot, change them for the sake of fashion or modern day exigencies.

In a recent forum a Roman Catholic writer suggested that the PNCC should have gone the way of Utrecht, or that it should admit (formerly) Episcopalian/Anglican/etc. priests to Holy Orders. These are obviously the thoughts of someone who thinks the National Church can just go about doing whatever it pleases; one who is confused by the Catholicism of the PNCC — ‘How can you be Catholic if the Pope doesn’t guide you?’ To that writer I would say: The way others have gone is the path away from the Catholic faith. Those who do such things envision a church with all the modern conveniences, modeled on themselves and their interpretations, rather than the Catholic reality of sacraments given us by Jesus Christ. The question the National Church asks, when it comes to the sacraments, when it comes to Orders, when it comes to a believer’s acceptance of the Catholic faith is: “Do you hold the Catholic faith in this regard?” If you hold the Catholic faith, if you are Catholic, then be National Catholic. If you do not hold the Catholic faith, if you only wish to remain where you are, only under a proper Church for the sake of externals, then God bless you, fare thee well, seek Him where you might find Him. Our Lord instructed:

“Not every one who says to me, `Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.” — Matthew 7:21.

The sacraments are our guide posts and our strength along the path to doing the will of the Father. I am National Catholic because the sacraments ground me and guide me in my Catholicism. They are the reality of Christ in my life, touching my life, healing my life, regenerating my life, bringing me home to eternal life with Him in heaven.

A tribute to a co-worker and a gentleman, Dr. Hy Dubowsky

From the Altamont Enterpise: Obituary: Hy Dubowsky and Hy Dubowsky’s legacy: Further the reach of humankind’s commonality

Hy Dubowsky wasn’t big on handouts but he was big on helping people —” all kinds of people.

His son Eric tells a story about how, when his father visited him in New York City, and they would pass panhandlers shaking their cups, Dr. Dubowsky would fill the cups not with coins, but with granola bars.

Dr. Dubowsky said, —They want food,— recalled his son, concluding, —He wanted to help them in a good way.—

Once, when Dr. Dubowsky won a supermarket contest that let him pick up as many groceries as he could in a minute, —He got a ham for the homeless,— said his son.

And, the Dubowsky family would spend the morning of Thanksgiving Day delivering dinners to the homebound.

In his work for the state’s labor department, Dr. Dubowsky developed programs to help society’s marginalized citizens —” recently released prisoners, the mentally ill, the down and out —” get jobs. He understood that jobs, not handouts, were a ticket to society.

He died on Sunday morning after a 14-month battle with a rare form of lymphoma. His wife —” Carol Kaelin —” and his three children —” Eric, Ryan, and Meg —” were with him at St. Peter’s Hospital when he died. He was 58. The days before, said Eric, had been like a live wake as people whose lives he had touched came to see him one last time.

—He always would help people and never expect anything in return,— said his son.

Dr. Dubowsky was kind-hearted, but he wasn’t a pushover. Eric tells a story from his childhood when his father was riding the subway in New York one morning. —Someone decided he may be an easy target, in a business suit on the way to work,— Eric recalled. The robber threatened him with a box cutter and told him to give up all his money.

—My father had some of the fastest reflexes known to humankind,— said Eric. —When they do the ruler test, when you hold your hand out and someone drops the ruler…he would catch the ruler at the number zero…My father quickly grabbed his wrist and held the robber under control until the next subway stop and took him off the train to find a police officer.—

Eric concluded, —I think most people would have said, ‘Take my money.’ But not my dad. He was a true New Yorker and showed that criminal his way to justice.—

Dr. Dubowsky worked not just with programs but with individuals. His son gave several heartfelt examples of how he helped people in need find and keep jobs. They came to stand on their own and give back to society.

The same applied to his children.

—He always wanted you to empower yourself,— said Eric.

He coached his kids in most any sport that interested them even if he didn’t play himself. As a member of the Guilderland Elks, he also oversaw youth activities, ranging from an annual Easter egg hunt to a competitive hoop shoot.

He became a varsity lacrosse referee because his son, Ryan, played.

—I wasn’t the best football player,— said Eric. But Eric wanted to play in college and, he said of his father, —He wouldn’t let me give up on myself.— His father drove with him to various colleges and kept his confidence up. Eric made the team at the University of Rochester.

—He always made you believe you could do whatever you wanted,— said Eric who now works as a bond trader in New York City.

Dr. Dubowsky saw education as critical to individual success and essential to the community. He held five academic degrees himself, but was not a pompous or self-important man. Rather, he was self-deprecating and selfless.

He was also enormously energetic. He first ran in 2005 for a seat on the Guilderland School Board, saying of himself and his wife, Carol Kaelin, —We have three children but, beyond that, we believe that education is the essence of a free and prosperous country.—

Undeterred by defeat, Dr. Dubowsky ran again in 2006 and won. He planned —” despite the cancer —” to run for a second term this spring. —This gives me great satisfaction,— he said in October. —It’s been a heck of a three years.—

This past summer, as television cameras rolled, crowds filled the school board meetings like never before. Mostly students, the onlookers protested the transfer of two high school teachers to the middle school. In July, when the nine board members gave their views on whether the board should review the administration’s transfer of the teachers, Dr. Dubowsky was one of only two who favored review.

He had been outspoken before on free-speech issues and calling for accountability from the district’s administration.

When he spoke to that packed room in July, he began by talking of his regard for the other board members but was clear and forceful in stating his own view. —We cannot be so conceited,— he said, —think ourselves so superior to those we represent, to believe that an issue of such importance to the community should not be subject to the scrutiny of those they elected.—

The pin-drop quiet room erupted into applause that lasted for more than a minute.

Dubowsky left that meeting, his son said this week, to go to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City for a stem-cell transplant.

—He always looked forward to the next treatment,— said his son, but was willing to push it to get to a meeting he cared about. —He made sure he really stood up for his beliefs and the beliefs of the people he represented,— said his son. —He stood up for the kids.—

In October, as the first strong tremors of the recession were being felt, board members discussed the budget for the following year. Most of them talked of being scared, urged caution, or advised no new initiatives.

Dr. Dubowsky described his view as —totally opposite of my colleagues.— He suggested such initiatives as teleconferences and using distance learning, offering such courses as Chinese, career planning, and grammar boot camp by partnering with other schools.

He said he’d like to expand the music program into the community —” offering entertainment in tough times —” and establish —an institute for academic excellence.—

Dr. Dubowsky said then of Americans, —We were some of the smartest people around— with intellectual capital that drove the economy. He concluded, —I would not want to back off…As the budget moves forward, are there opportunities we can seize?—

Seizing opportunities —” and making them available for others —” was a hallmark of Dr. Dubowsky’s life.

He attended his last board meeting in February. He couldn’t drive then and struggled even to walk. But his comments were as insightful and provocative as ever. Hearing a report on the structure of the administration, Dr. Dubowsky said, —I think the study is static. Our charge for the district is, where do we go, not where we are.— Just because similar districts are doing something, he said, doesn’t mean that Guilderland should, too.

He framed these comments with an anecdote from his youth so that the tone was amusing rather than abrasive. Still, he made his point.

Dr. Dubowsky kept living his life, with the same passion he had before his cancer diagnosis. He wasn’t defined by his disease.

—There was never a point until two days ago that he thought he wouldn’t get better,— said his son, Eric, on Monday. —He never complained.—

At the last school board meeting, the board’s vice president noted after a presentation on a new engineering program at the high school, Project Lead the Way, that Dr. Dubowsky had pushed for it. It was appropriate recognition because Dr. Dubowsky did, himself, lead the way, not just in pushing for innovative programs but in energetically questioning and offering new perspectives.

When he first ran for school board, Dr. Dubowsky talked about the importance of learning life’s lessons. He said that his daughter, Meg, who is now a senior at the high school, had just been part of a 30-Hour Famine fund-raiser at St. Madeleine Sophie Church. —They didn’t look at Meg as Jewish,— he said. —She was just accepted and taken into the church for the Famine. These are the kind of barriers we have to break down.—

He concluded, —Kids learn hatred at home…There’s a need to align yourself with something. If you give kids things in school to get involved with, they can belong to something like a sports team, where they see a boy whose a dynamite kicker or a girl who gets up and can really sing. You break it down so you see individuals, you see commonalities.—

Dr. Dubowsky’s legacy is one that will inspire us to see the commonality of the human condition and offer ourselves to further its reach. Another story his son tells is of how he and his father completed an arduous 11-day hike together, scaling New Mexico’s Mount Baldy.

At first, Eric struggled and was buoyed by his father’s support. But then, on the sixth day, when his father’s knees gave out, it was the son who carried the heavy pack so the father could continue the climb. They reached their goal together because they had learned the value of caring, and sharing the burden when the need was greatest.

Closing the book on the Rev. Marek Bozek (and St. Stans)

From St. Louis’ FOX Affiliate KTVI: Controversial St. Stanislaus Pastor Marek Bozek Dismissed From Priesthood

Pope Benedict XVI has dismissed Marek Bozek from the clerical state. Therefore, he may no longer function as a priest, with the exception of offering absolution to the dying. The dismissal from the clerical state focuses solely on Bozek, and does not address the status of the St. Stanislaus Kostka Corporation…

As I had noted over multiple posts, the Rev. Bozek took his parish off the deep end, and as far from Catholicism as possible (excepting certain externals). I had initially hoped that the parish would look to the PNCC as its model. Unfortunately, they decided to retain all the extravagances so much a part of Rome’s Novus Ordo Ameri-church. Eucharistic ministers, communion in the hand, etc, would have made for a very poor fit with the PNCC. Those extravagances coupled with the Rev. Bozek’s liberal views will soon have St. Stans in the hands of the vagante’s (or as some parishioners hope — and what would likely be best — back under Rome).

The parishioner’s initial understanding of responsibilities was correct: lay control over the parish’s assets and a democratic lay structure, which were provided to them in response to the PNCC’s growth in St. Louis, and adherence to the Catholic faith. With that they would have been able to recognize themselves in the mirror. As it is, they and their ancestors (if they exist) will never know who their grandparents were, nor what they represented. In attempting to save their way of life they destroyed it — regardless of how things turn out.

10 reasons I’m a National Catholic — Reason 1: We’re right

The Holy Polish National Catholic Church is right in its faith, practice, and structure. The Church, guided by the Holy Spirit (John 20:22, Acts 1:5), teaches the truth about God, about Jesus Christ, about salvation, and about the means and methods by which mankind is to organize in an effort to reach eternal life. Beyond teacher, it is the visible society of all believers who join in common cause to acknowledge Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior; the community of all who endeavor to live as Jesus taught.

One can “believe” in a lot of things. You can “believe” that water is made from hydrogen and oxygen, that the sun will rise tomorrow, that your car will start in the morning, and that the school bus will arrive relatively timely. Each of those “beliefs” can be supported by evidence.

To be Catholic requires that you believe, not from evidence alone, but from faith, that the Church is the true community of believers formed by and established by Jesus Christ (Matthew 16:18). You must believe that the Church holds and teaches the truth given to it by Jesus Christ (John 16:12-13). You must believe that the Church guides you in the way of truth; that through its liturgy, prayer, teaching, and structure you become the person God intended you to be. You can call this position a belief in the infallibility of the Church — that the Church is truly right in what she teaches, in how she lives.

If I did not believe that the Polish National Catholic Church is right in all it prays and teaches then I am simply wasting my time. I could just as easily have joined a social club for companionship or for other good purposes. I know myself, I know my conscience, and I know my faith. I know that I am not wasting my time and that the Church is more than a club. The Church is the true guide to all that is good, to heaven, to all that Christ promised through the Church.

My declaration of faith is faith by regeneration. Through the Holy Spirit’s action I came to faith, and through that faith I have come to believe that all the Polish National Catholic Church prays and teaches is right, is in full accord with the teachings of Jesus, as well as the faith handed down through the Apostles.

Therefore, I believe that the Polish National Catholic Church is the true Church. It is the Divinely instituted society that teaches me, guides me, and trains me in all that is true and right — true and right by God’s standards! Through the Church’s way of life I will gain heaven because Jesus Christ gave the Church the graces necessary to carry out that mission.

As G. K. Chesterton wrote in The Catholic Church and Conversion:

But it is one thing to conclude that Catholicism is good and another to conclude that it is right. It is one thing to conclude that it is right and another to conclude that it is always right.

I am a National Catholic because by my faith journey, by my experience, by faith, and by regeneration I have come to believe that the Polish National Catholic Church is more than good, it is more than right, it is always right in what it teaches. It offers me, and all people, the fullness of sanctification and truth, the path to heaven.
