January 23 – The Intelligentsia by Konstanty Ildefons Gałczyński

We always run away, from town to town,
we–intellectuals:
small and shivering, a ribe without a tribe,
a class of ineffectuals.

From country to country, we shift about with our families:
we each have a gramophone,
millions of us. But it’s no use. Thy keep asking:
“Which country is your own?”

And since we don’t know, we can only weep
oceans of salt oblations.
bemneath fake palms we write artificial letters
and post them in dirty stations.

Translated by Jerzy Peterkiewicz and Burns Singer

intellectuals

Wciąż uciekamy. Z miasta do miasta.
Inteligenci.
Tęskniąca nacja. Ginąca klasa.
Mali zmarznięci.

Milionem rodzin. Z gramofonami.
Z kraju do kraju.
—” Powiedzcie, gdzie jest wasza ojczyzna?
Wciąż nas pytają.

A my nie wiemy; a my płaczemy,
jak woda morska.
Pod sztuczną palmą listy piszemy
na brudnych dworcach.

January 21 – Those Who Love by Cyprian Kamil Norwid

A woman, parents, brothers, even God
Can still be loved, but those who love them need
Some physical vestige, shadow: I have none.
Cracow is silent now that its hewn stone
Has lost what tongue it had; no banner of
Mazovian linen has been stained to prove
Art obstinate; the peasant’s houses tilt;
The native ogives of our churches wilt;
Barns are too long; our patron saints are bored
With being statues; partitioned and ignored,
Form, from the fields to steeples, can’t command
One homespun wand or touch one angel’s hand.

Translated by Jerzy Peterkiewicz and Burns Singer

Kto kocha – widzieć chce choć cień postaci,
I tak się kocha Matkę – Ojca – braci –
Kochankę – Boga nawet… więc mi smutno,
Że mazowieckie ani jedno płótno
Nie jest sztandarem sztuce – że ciosowy
W Krakowskiem kamień zapomniał rozmowy –
Że wszystkie chaty chłopskie krzywe – że kościoły
Nie na ogiwie polskim stoją – że stodoły
Za długie – świętych figury patronów
Bez wyrazu – od szczytu wież aż do zagonów
Rozbiorem kraju forma pokrzywdzona woła
O łokieć z trzciny w ręku Pańskiego anioła.

(Actually an excerpt from the verse dialog “Bogomił” in Norwid’s Promethidion)

Christian Witness

Prayer for our new President

Today the Holy Church honors Saint Sebastian. The prayer I cite below is for the Commemoration. I offer this prayer for our new President. May God grant him wisdom, courage, health, strength, and a spirit of justice. May the Holy Spirit call to him, moving him to righteous action in accordance with God’s law. May he be further moved to oppose evil from wherever it may come.

I also offer this prayer for all Christian people in the United States, that we may bear witness to God’s holy law, seeking to obey Him rather then men in all that we do.

Lord, fill us with that spirit of courage
which gave Your martyr Sebastian
strength to offer his life in faithful witness.
Help us to learn from him to cherish Your law
and to obey You rather than men.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son,
Who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.
Amen.

Poetry

January 20 – Untitled by the Rev. Jan Twardowski

Dogmatists are making noises in Latin
moralists are droning over the little trough of human conscience
apologists are creaking —“ crucified on the cross of faith
preachers are repairing a loudspeaker so as to be heard better

philosophers are grumbling about St Thomas, already filed
with the old yearbooks of saints in the archive of Paradise
martyrs are counting up blows to their faces
the pumpkin of sin has at last fallen on the heads of sticklers
organists are licking sounds —“
believers have split into warring camps

And only in the plain open land
in the breath of a herb —“
on your knees admiring the sky-drifts
can you still find Silence

Translation by Sarah Lawson and Malgorzata Koraszewska

Silence in a field of herbs
