Poetry

October 12 – Sonnet V by Mikołaj Sęp-Szarzyński

It’s hard not to love but in love to stay
Poor solace, when our thoughts seduced by lust
Sugarcoat to excess those things which must
Undergo changes and suffer decay.

Who will obtain enough satisfaction
From gold, scepter, fame, pleasure, charming face
So that in his heart they would fill much space
And from all fears he would find protection?

Love is the right course of our life on earth,
But our body, made of the elements,
Praising what it knows had a feeble birth,

Deceives the soul, which ne’er finds sufficience,
When You, eternal and true perfection,
It doesn’t see, the aim of its affection.

O holy Lord, grant us, let us have, too,
What you command, and return it to you.

Translated by Michal J. Mikos

I nie miłować ciężko, i miłować
Nędzna pociecha, gdy żądzą zwiedzione
Myśli cukrują nazbyt rzeczy one,
Które i mienić, i muszą się psować.

Komu tak będzie dostatkiem smakować
Złoto, sceptr, sława, rozkosz i stworzone
Piękne oblicze, by tym nasycone
I mógł mieć serce i trwóg się warować?

Miłość jest własny bieg bycia naszego;
Ale z żywiołów utworzone ciało,
To chwaląc, co zna początku równego,

Zawodzi duszę, której wszystko mało,
Gdy ciebie, wiecznej i prawej piękności,
Samej nie widzi, celu swej miłości.

Quincentenary of Calvin

CalvinTo mark the occasion an interesting blog type website called Calvin 500.

Of course we know the issues here, reform was necessary, but it became more than reform. Reform without infallibility in faith, doctrine, and morals becomes just another human invention, subject to change and whim. The pitfalls of fashioning a religion where everyone decides for themselves on matters of faith, doctrine, and morals plagues us to this day, and even the Reformed Church in America is struggling with changing belief patterns enlightened by current fashion.

I am not saying is that each person cannot decide for themselves. Indeed, each person must make their own decision for, against or indifferent to Christ’s Gospel. Rather I posit that when a person does decide for Christ, when they are regenerated, their regenerated lives can best be fulfilled in a path with clearly defined guideposts, guideposts only the infallible Catholic Church can adequately provide.
