Poetry,

February 14 – Uncertainty by Adam Mickiewicz

While I don’t see you, I don’t shed a tear
I never lose my senses when you’re near,
But, with our meetings few and far between
There’s something missing, waiting to be seen.
Is there a name for what I’m thinking of?
Are we just friends? Or should I call this love?

As soon as we have said our last good-byes,
Your image never floats before my eyes;
But more than once, when you have been long gone,
I seemed to feel your presence linger on.
I wonder then what I’ve been thinking of.
Are we just friends? Or should I call this love?

When I’m downcast, I never seek relief
By pouring out my heart in tales of grief;
Yet, as I wander aimlessly, once more
I somehow end up knocking at your door;
What brought me here? What am I thinking of?
Are we just friends? Or should I call this love?

I’d give my life to keep you sound and well,
To make you smile, I would descend to hell;
But though I’d climb the mountains, swim the seas
I do not look to be your health and peace:
Again I ask, what am I thinking of?
Are we just friends? or should I call this love?

And when you place your hand upon my palm,
I am enveloped in a blissful calm,
Prefiguring some final, gentle rest;
But still my heart beats loudly in my breast
As if to ask: what are you thinking of?
Are you two friends? or will you call this love?

Not bardic spirit seized my mortal tongue
When I thought of you and composed this song;
But still, I can’t help wondering sometimes:
Where did these notions come from, and these rhymes?
In heaven’s name, what I was dreaming of?
And what had inspired me? Friendship or love?

Gdy cię nie widzę, nie wzdycham, nie płaczę,
Nie tracę zmysłów, kiedy cię zobaczę;
Jednakże gdy cię długo nie oglądam,
Czegoś mi braknie, kogoś widzieć żądam;
I tęskniąc sobie zadaję pytanie:
Czy to jest przyjaźń? czy to jest kochanie?

Gdy z oczu znikniesz, nie mogę ni razu
W myśli twojego odnowić obrazu?
Jednakże nieraz czuję mimo chęci,
Że on jest zawsze blisko mej pamięci.
I znowu sobie powtarzam pytanie:
Czy to jest przyjaźń? czy to jest kochanie?

Cierpiałem nieraz, nie myślałem wcale,
Abym przed tobą szedł wylewać żale;
Idąc bez celu, nie pilnując drogi,
Sam nie pojmuję, jak w twe zajdę progi;
I wchodząc sobie zadaję pytanie;
Co tu mię wiodło? przyjaźń czy kochanie?

Dla twego zdrowia życia bym nie skąpił,
Po twą spokojność do piekieł bym zstąpił;
Choć śmiałej żądzy nie ma w sercu mojem,
Bym był dla ciebie zdrowiem i pokojem.
I znowu sobie powtarzam pytanie:
Czy to jest przyjaźń? czy to jest kochanie?

Kiedy położysz rękę na me dłonie,
Luba mię jakaś spokojność owionie,
Zda się, że lekkim snem zakończę życie;
Lecz mnie przebudza żywsze serca bicie,
Które mi głośno zadaje pytanie:
Czy to jest przyjaźń? czyli też kochanie?

Kiedym dla ciebie tę piosenkę składał,
Wieszczy duch mymi ustami nie władał;
Pełen zdziwienia, sam się nie postrzegłem,
Skąd wziąłem myśli, jak na rymy wbiegłem;
I zapisałem na końcu pytanie:
Co mię natchnęło? przyjaźń czy kochanie?

From PC World: 10 Ways Microsoft’s Retail Stores Will Differ From Apple Stores

Microsoft announced plans to open retail stores, hoping to boost visibility of many of its products and its brand. The move seems to be an effort to mimic the success that Apple has had with its retail stores. The news is just too tempting not to have some fun with. So here are some yet-to-be-officially-revealed details about the Microsoft stores.

1) Instead of Apple’s sheer walls of glass, Microsoft’s stores will have brushed steel walls dotted with holes — reminiscent of Windows security.

2) The store will have six different entrances: Starter, Basic, Premium, Professional, Enterprise, and Ultimate. While all six doors will lead into the same store, the Ultimate door requires a fee of $100 for no apparent reason.

3) Instead of a “Genius Bar” (as Apple provides) Microsoft will offer an Excuse Bar. It will be staffed by Microsofties trained in the art of evading questions, directing you to complicated and obscure fixes, and explaining it’s a problem with the hardware — not a software bug.

4) The Windows Genuine Advantage team will run storefront security, assuming everybody is a thief until they can prove otherwise.

5) Store hours are undetermined. At any given time the store mysteriously shuts down instantaneously for no apparent reason. (No word yet on what happens to customers inside)…

One person left the following comment on this tongue-in-cheek post:

You have to feel sorry for Apple fanboys that this is how they waste their lives away proving to the entire world how jealous they are of Microsoft. You could have just bought a real PC to begin with and then you would have a life.

apple-logo1As the person in my home responsible for fixing stuff, this is exactly the reason we ditched Microsoft products. I had no life. I was constantly fixing, installing updates, downloading anti-virus and firewall software that slowed the machines to a crawl. Wasted days and wasted nights. I wanted to have a life, a real life, so we switched to Mac — bought three of them. Plugged them in — and they worked, right out of the box, painless. We now have a life. The two left-over boxes? They are running Linux – Ubuntu. Again, no worries. Ahhh, life…

February 13 – The Rainbow by Lucjan Rydel

Beyond Cracow there stands a black wood
And on this wood a rainbow stood.
     She is further away than ever
     Beyond the seventh river,
God binds us by the rainbow on that wood.

God made a bridge across the heavens
Out of stripes colored in sevens.
     Oh, angels, bear the weight
     Of my heart to her feet
Across that rainbow which spans heavens.

Translation by Jerzy Peterkiewicz and Burns Singer

Rainbows in the wood

Od Krakowa czarny las,
Nad tym lasem tęczy pas –
Ona tam daleko,
Gdzieś za siódmą rzeką,
Lecz Bóg związał nas.

Z kolorowych siedmiu smug
Most przez niebo zrobił Bóg;
Po tęczowym moście
Aniołowie, noście
Serce moje do jej nóg

Poetry

February 12 – A quiet prayer by Józef Andrzej Frasik

Thou art the seed, The Rosary is thine,
Thy fields sparkle, from thy hands roses flow —
Thine are the fields, thou art the meadow —
Morning star! Vessel of honor!
Young girls adorn thy wayside shrines,
Blossoming fields sing to thee each evening
Silent branches reach up to the sky, budding willows —
trembling in the sun and the angry wind.
Thou art the most beautiful image of all Madonnas,
Thou art the flower, Thou art most admirable,
at twilight thou art, and at morning’s dawn,
Thou art as noble as the Mount of Olives.
Thine Czestochowa, thine Ostrobrama,
Thine Kalwaryja and thine are the wayside —
the small remembrances from childhood —
and thy afflictions! devout Lady.
Thou art like snow, for thou art pure —
Thine is the lighted candle, thine the pain —
Thou exhausted aside a donkey,
Thou art like us – and thou art heavenly.
Thou art most holy and thou art good,
Thou art Polish — and thou art our queen.
Happy, he who with joy greets thy entrance,
House of gold! Solitary gate of heaven!

Ty jesteś siewna, Tyś jest różańcowa,
Ty polem szumisz, rankiem po rosie chodzisz —“
Ty jesteś Panna polna, Ty jesteś łąkowa —“
Gwiazdo zaranna! Przewodniczko łodzi!
Tobie przydrożne kapliczki stroją dziewczyny,
Tobie śpiew wieczorny rodzi łąka
Gałązko ciszy ugornej, Pąku wierzbiny —“
drżąca słońcem na wietrze sinym.
Ty jesteś, z obrazów Madonno, najpiękniejsza Panna,
Ty jesteś kwietna, Ty jesteś przedziwna,
pod zmierzch wieczorna jesteś, a rankiem zaranna,
Ty jesteś wzniosła jak Góra Oliwna.
Tyś Częstochowska i Tyś Ostrobramska,
Tyś Kalwaryjska i Tyś jest przydrożna —“
na małych jasnaś z dzieciństwa obrazkach —“
a Tyś strapiona! Panno pobożna.
Ty jesteś śnieżna, boś Ty oczyszczona —“
Tyś jest gromniczna i Tyś jest bolesna —“
Tyś na osiołku w ucieczce strudzona,
Ty jesteś ludzka – a Tyś niedoczesna.
Tyś jest najświętsza i Ty jesteś dobra,
Ty jesteś polska – a Tyś jest królewska.
Szczęśliwy, kto jaką lepszą część Ciebie obrał,
Domie złoty! Sierocych ros Bramo niebieska!
