Gmail Mobile

Gmail is offering a new java based application for mobile telephones. See: What is up with this new Gmail mobile application? by ZDNet‘s Matthew Miller:

Google released a new Gmail mobile application yesterday that has led to a bit of confusion since they already have a mobile formatted Gmail site you can access from a mobile browser. This new method is a downloadable Java application so you must have a Java-enabled device and it appears that the T-Mobile USA limit they state may not be accurate. Find out all the details on using this application with T-Mobile on a Nokia N73 in the full blog entry.

It took me all of a minute to download and set it up on my Audiovox 5600. It is very cool —“ and works great.

We’ve re-evaluated peace

Per Reuters: Palestinian women killed in Gaza mosque clash

Two Palestinian women acting as human shields between Israeli soldiers and Palestinian gunmen were killed on Friday during a stand-off at a Gaza mosque, before the 60 gunmen managed to escape.

More than 280 Palestinians have been killed in the four-month-old offensive, about half of them civilians. Three Israeli soldiers have been killed.

Yes, they were acting as human shields. Yes, they put themselves in harms way. Yet the Israelis were wrong to fire into the crowd.

The whole idea of the nation state, of being civilized, of being part of the community of nations is that you are to hold yourself to a higher standard. When a nation becomes a terrorist it has sunk into a paradigm that makes brute force and anarchy its operating principal.

So what were the alternatives?

  • Wait it out (from protected positions with massive firepower)?
  • Prevent the women from entering the area in the first place (they knew they were coming and followed the call-out for these women, and they saw them approaching)?

Perhaps this is part of the new strategy precipitated by the far-right’s entry into Israel’s ruling coalition. As Mr. Lieberman has said, bomb the population centers.

As the Jerusalem Post reports:

Lieberman accused the Times editorial board of “old thinking” and said it was time to “go back to the drawing board” to reevaluate the goals of the peace process.

Yep, we’re re-evaluated peace, go kill those women.

Saints and Martyrs

November 3 – St. Hubert of Liege (Św. Hubert)

Amen.

How does this impact us?

From the NY Times in Medic Tends a Fallen Marine, With Skill, Prayer and Anger

Inside the wire, First Lt. Scott R. Burlison, the company commander, gathered the group and told them that Lance Corporal Smith was alive and in surgery. He was critical, but stable. They hoped to fly him to Germany.

Doc had scrubbed himself clean. A big marine stepped forward with a small Bible, and the platoon huddled. He began with Psalm 91, verses 5 and 11…

Read the story and you will see the anger and frustration our soldiers have to deal with. They will come back wounded in very many ways.

Recently there has been a lot of discussion surrounding mounting budget deficits. Certainly a concern, but couple those deficits with the typical neglect our servicemen and women face after the fight.

The crippled, the sick, the angry, and the insane will be welcomed home warmly only to be presented with a check that will bounce when they seek to cash it.

From the pit of hell they are crying out for God’s mercy. May God have mercy on us all.

You shall not fear the terror of the night nor the arrow that flies by day,

For God commands the angels to guard you in all your ways.

The Long Walk

The BCC’s Tim Whewell uncovers new documentary evidence that solves the mystery of a dramatic escape from a Soviet Gulag by a Polish Calvary officer, Sławomir Rawicz, along with other Polish officers. Mr. Rawicz’s book The Long Walk has been in continuous print since 1956. The voracity of his account has frequently been questioned. Listen to the BBC’s radio story.

What I liked best about the story is the fact that the truth of Poles’ imprisonment in Soviet gulags is acknowledged. Something the West is painfully unaware of. To get an accurate recounting of the ordeal of the gulags check out A Forgotten Odyssey.

Homilies

Solemnity of All Saints

They stood before the throne and before the Lamb,
wearing white robes and holding palm branches in their hands.
They cried out in a loud voice:

—Salvation comes from our God, who is seated on the throne,
and from the Lamb.—

That is what the saints proclaimed;
That is what we are afraid to proclaim, and thereby be acknowledged and notorious Christians;
But, that is what we must proclaim, for there is no other choice.

…and the elder will say of us who have witnessed the reality of Christ ever present —“ our salvation:

—These are the ones who have survived the time of great distress;
they have washed their robes
and made them white in the Blood of the Lamb.—

You and I must…
We must confess Jesus as our God and as the world’s salvation.
We must bring all to Him and His Holy Church.
We must witness, washing our robes in the Blood of Christ, and as He promises, we will be counted among the blessed, the saints of God.

Jesus told us:

Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you
and utter every kind of evil against you falsely because of me.

It is our duty, our work, and our struggle.

Saints of God, intercede for us! Pray for us that we may persevere in, teach, and defend the Holy Faith.
