Editorial – Impure Islam

Impure Islam by Irshad Manji is a fantastic editorial, originally from the WSJ as reprinted in Haaretz.

Ms. Manji runs the Muslim Refusenik website and is the author of The Trouble with Islam Today.

One of the most pertinent quotes from her website:

But I remain a hugely ambivalent Muslim because of what’s happening “on the ground” — massive human rights violations, particularly against women and religious minorities — in the name of Allah.

Liberal Muslims say that what I’m describing isn’t “true” Islam. But these Muslims should own up to something: Prophet Muhammad himself said that religion is the way we conduct ourselves toward others. By that standard, how Muslims actually behave is Islam, and to sweep that reality under the rug of theory is to absolve ourselves of any responsibility for our fellow human beings..

Jesus Cartoon Rejected?

Danish paper refused “offensive” Jesus cartoons
From Reuters by James Kilner

COPENHAGEN (Reuters) – The Danish newspaper that first published caricatures of the Prophet Mohammad infuriating Muslims worldwide previously turned down cartoons of Jesus as too offensive, a cartoonist said on Wednesday.

The cartoonist is wrong. They were offensive only in that they were badly done. That is, he’s a bad cartoonist.

Sure, this is what I would do as an artist. Try to capitalize on the current media frenzy just to be publicly told, by an editor, that you are not very good. To wit:

Jens Kaiser, the former editor of Jyllands-Posten’s Sunday edition who turned down the cartoons three years ago, said he had done so because they were no good.

“Having seen the cartoons, I found that they were not very good. I failed to see the purportedly provocative nature,” he said in a statement.

“Perhaps explaining my story of three years ago in its proper context at least won’t make matters any worse,” Zieler said.

First, Mr. Zieler is the cartoonist. Bringing this up now is just a way to get his name in the headlines.

Second, explaining his story won’t work. These people are offended by everything we do. If you said the sky was blue they would be offended. Christianity, Judaism, freedom, women, you name it, they’re offended. Until we are subjugated or converted they will continue to be offended.

So Mr. Zieler, continue to speak freely. We are who we are, just don’t expect that your explanation will not make matters worse.

PNCC Holy Days and Feasts Script

I developed a php script based on the work of Dan Kaplan and the DateCalculator Script from Bob’s Scripts.

The script provides the dates of Easter and the days related to Easter. It also provides the dates of other Western Christian Feasts and Solemnities as well as those particular to the PNCC.

The script provides dates between 1902 and 2037. Just enter the year you would like to know about. To have a look click here…

If anyone would like the script just let me know. I’d be happy to share. Please E-mail me here

NBC Cancels Anti-Christian Show

(CNSNews.com) – The NBC “Will and Grace” episode featuring Britney Spears hosting a cooking show called “Cruci-fixins” has been cancelled in the wake of Christian protests, but the term was actually recycled from a Fox network show.

Hmmm, the term was recycled from shows on a second rate network. And this is supposed to make a difference? Besides reruns and adolescent programming Fox has…

Maybe they were afraid they’d have to do a show about Mo-hama-dama-ding-dongs, the snack with no substance?

Blessed Are the Meek: The Life and Martyrdom of a Priest on Mission in Turkey

Fr. Andrea wanted to live in the Middle East —as Jesus lived there, with the humble gift of his life.— They killed him, crying out —Allah is great,— while he prayed

ROMA, February 7, 2006 —“ He had knelt down to pray shortly before celebrating the Mass in the little Catholic Church of Trabzon, in the north of Turkey, on the Black Sea, when a young man shot him in the back twice with a pistol, crying out —Allah is great.—

This is how Fr. Andrea Santoro, 60, of the diocese of Rome, a missionary in Turkey, was killed on Sunday, February 5.

Later, in another article featured on the same page, Fr. Andrea’s words about his goals appear.

—Open a window that would allow Western and Eastern Churches to exchange gifts, rediscover the sap that flows from the Jewish roots into the Christian tree, encourage a genuine and respectful dialogue between Christianity and Islam, and enable him to bear witness with his life and feelings, above all through prayer, the study of the Holy scriptures, friendships based on listening, talking, simplicity, his sincere believing and the way he lived.—

To me he is a martyr for Christ and for unity between East and West.

God is great indeed! Blood of Christ, courage of Martyrs, save us.

How we receive

A friend approached me today. He noted that the pastor of his parish spent the entire homily this past Sunday discussing the proper procedures for receiving the Holy Eucharist.

His statement to me boiled down to: —He talked about how we should hold out our hands. Why doesn’t he just speak about the Gospel?—

Why indeed!

In reply I said that since, at least in the United States, the Eucharist may be received in the hand in the Roman Catholic Church; pastors must take time to correct improper behaviors.

I also noted that the PNCC doesn’t go in for the ‘communion in the hand bit. Only the ordained may touch the Holy Eucharist (Bishops, Priests, and Deacons). It should also be noted that the PNCC does not have ‘Extraordinary Ministers of Communion’. The PNCC also has regular exposition and benediction of the Blessed Sacrament, at a minimum, on every first Sunday. We stress the dignity and reverence due the real presence of Jesus Christ.

In my opinion ‘communion in the hand’ is a horrid abuse. I will not speak for the Roman Catholic Church on the issue, it is not my place. However, the article —Communion in the Hand, Rethinking Communion in the Hand— by Jude A Huntz from catholic-pages.com does a great job of detailing this issue.

The point about improper behavior and abuse is that it exists where it is allowed. If we stop, before opening the door to situations that might lead to abuse, we have far less to worry about. Once the door is opened it is very difficult to close it.

Whenever we deign to partake of the Bread of Life we should be circumspect, composed, of proper physical and spiritual demeanor. Even the Saints recalled their unworthiness and the care that must be taken in receiving the Eucharist. To wit St. Paul tells us:

—Whoever therefore eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of profaning the Body and Blood of the Lord”

I’ve had people come forward for communion in our parish and stand there with their hand out. I simply, quietly, and very gently tell them that I cannot place the Eucharist in their hand. Since we give the Eucharist, Body and Blood, by intinction I ask if they have any health reasons for not receiving the Precious Blood. Regardless of that fact, the Eucharist goes on the tongue.

In my experience only one person has walked away. I also had one person ask me about this at a non-liturgical event. They said they would never go to a church where they cannot get communion in the hand.

Unfortunately, for that Roman Catholic person, they had a very poor understanding and/or education on the fact that ‘communion in the hand’ is not their right. It is in fact an ‘indult’ given to the various dioceses in the United States. They also had a very poor understanding of the concept of the Eucharist. The Eucharist is for them but not for them alone. It is the Bread of Life, entire and complete, for all who partake worthily. The ministers of the altar acting in persona Christi are giving of what they sacramentally represent.

A little Aquinas should help.

Síºmit íºnus, síºmunt mille:
Quantum ísti, tantum ílle:
Nec síºmptus consíºmitur.

Síºmunt bóni, síºmunt máli:
Sórte tamen inæquáli,
Vítæ vel intéritus.

Mors est mális, víta bónis:
Víde páris sumptiónis
Quam sit díspar éxitus.

Whether one or thousands eat,
All receive the selfsame meat,
Nor the less for others leave.

Both the wicked and the good
Eat of this celestial food;
But with ends how opposite!

Here ‘t is life, and there ‘t is death,
The same, yet issuing to each,
In a difference infinite.

To my friend I can only say; remember what you receive is due the utmost in holy dignity and respect.

Grace in the City

John Luke, the BLOGCORNER Preacher has a great article on salvation.

The premise is something we should all take to heart. Regardless of where you are or what you do the possibility of accepting Jesus Christ and living the Christian life is available to you. Is it an easy road? No. Is it impossible? No. Why? Because His yoke is easy and His burden is light.

See “blessed shall you be in the city”.
